Forecast for St. Joes

Don’t know if you guys heard the post game show on the radio, but Matt Smith was being fairly hard on the team for blowing the lead. Especially the 9 point swing with under 2 minutes to go. I could hear the disgust in his voice. Black was puckered up as usual.

I know I keep repeating this but something is wrong with our strength and conditioning system. A team that supposed is recruited as good shooter can't get worse as the year goes on, over and over and over. Players come and go and it the same thing over and over.

At one point late in the 2nd half, he blew his stack. Grant passed to Cayo for a 3 point play and he screamed derisively into the microphone (to paraphrase) "SEE GUYS YOU CAN STILL DO THAT LIKE YOU DID IN THE FIRST HALF". He snapped.

Any chance the Mafia has flipped him?

I have zero experience as a broadcaster, but it has to be pretty hard putting lipstick and a thong on this pig night in and night out. Seems to be a mentally exhausting experience.

That said, hopefully he's on board with the other #realfans now. We'll gladly accept his confession.

If you’re argument is that we’re not conditioned enough, and fade through the season, I can see that argument.

If you’re saying that we lift too much and become poor shooters, that is patently wrong, as working out doesn’t make you a worse shooter.

I disagree. Lifting too much will definitely make you a worse shooter.

If it is 30 minutes before the game...other than that I don’t have a clue one way or the other.

Matt Smith, radio gangster
Matt Smith is a loose cannon, but at this point I prefer that to Bob Black who continues to live in a world of denial. His post game interview of Mooney last night was softball after softball.

So, Chris tell me about the first half?
So, Chris tell me about Cayo and Golden's game?

We blew a 15 point lead and lost a game against a team missing damn near half of its players after a complete end game meltdown and those are your questions?

You can’t win them all:

I watched that last 3 a few times last night on the DVR trying to figure out where the breakdown was and I honestly have no clue of what they were even supposed to be doing. Golden was chasing Brown around the perimeter and Gilyard also tried to guard him, leaving the shooter with no one anywhere near him.

How is it that kids that are smart enough to get into UR can't figure out this defense and if that is the case, why the hell do we still try to play it?

nothing went right the last 2 minutes with a 7 point lead. guess that happens to bad teams.

Nathan gets fouled but they called it on the floor. I thought he was in the act and should have been a 3 point play. really late whistle if the foul was earlier.
Nathan then gets called for a foul for illegally standing still with his arms up.
Grant gets blocked and the ball goes off his arm.
we missed open looks badly. think the only basket we hit was a Grant mid range jumper.
we throw the length of the court down 2. someone (Charlie Brown?) gathers it and runs out of bounds. they call a foul on Andre.
that was the unfortunate stuff. the mistake was Jacob switching and leaving Funk open while Grant was chasing his man in what looked like straight man defense.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some.

Grant Golden's decision to shoot 3 three-pointers... After Goose's steal in the backcourt, Jacob Gilyard not passing to a wide open Goose and instead giving it to a charging Golden who has to do a running pull-up in the lane instead of committing a charging foul into two defenders... Julius Johnson doing the "Julius" and love-tapping a guy who is mid-dunk to give up a senseless three-point play... Goose's awful foul going for an offensive rebound when we were up three with a minute to go...

But mostly, our complete and utter refusal to do anything differently on defense, and expecting these guys to communicate and switch perfectly all game.

Re that last play - it looked like some may have been playing man, and some trying to play the match-up. Either way - 1. we had no clue what we were doing, that's on coaching and 2. if man, why the hell was Golden matched up on Brown?

As Jim Miller stated: "Loser's lose". You can microanalyze why we lost last night, but the reason is we have a culture of losing.

I watched it all play out last night and I knew as soon as St. Joes made the run to tie it up that we were going to lose. Why, because that is what we do.

Most of them will transfer out. Just watch.
Hate to agree with FrontRoyal, but did you see player expressions last night, especially Golden. They are so frustrated. Not sure how it showed on TV, but in person, they were really frustrated.

The longer you wait to remove Mooney, the more players and fans you continue to lose. This is absurd.

I could be wrong but I think it was man but still switching on screens. so Golden switched onto Brown. Jacob, though, switched without a screen like we do in our match up to keep him on the perimeter. someone still could have rotated to Funk, but that would leave someone else open with Grant and Jacob on the same guy.

If this continues it is very likely that we lose both Gilyard and Golden. I could maybe see Cayo too. However one that I don't think anyone is thinking about it Blake Francis. I know he hasn't played a game yet but he has to think that sitting out a year only to get into this mess with Mooney coaching the team is not an ideal situation. I would think that since he sat here he could play immeadiatly elsewhere.

During the 2nd intermission of a game last night, the Edmonton Oilers fired the coach. Why? Well, the team is not performing and front office wanted to give coach an opportunity to quietly leave the building. Sounds like a great idea

lol. Sounds like a Mooney post game presser ...... one excuse after another or more politely IF this or IF that happened. Mooney must GO at the end of the year.

none of my post was about or more specifically pro-Mooney. maybe you choose to make everything about him, but I don't. I made no excuses. I commented on what I saw in the last 2+ minutes of the game.

Did I say that? Thought my post was about the comparison of you and Mooney both playing the excuse game? Just because you're a pro-Mooney guy doesn't matter. And my take on it is a St Joe's fan probably thought the opposite of what you witnessed the last 2+ minutes.

ok, but my post wasn't an attempt at an excuse. just a play by play. I wasn't excusing the players for their play, the refs for what I think were mistakes, or Mooney for not having 5 guys on the same page defensively ... which shouldn't be difficult.
sorry if I got defensive. I get called a truther on here, a term which I find incredibly offensive.

I have heard from a source that Queally is not very happy with the state of the program and is willing to spend big money to change things. This means a coaching change with a big time replacement coming in. Message me privately if you want to know more.

I wish you’re right man. This could revitalize the fanbase and carry a lot of positive momentum into next year. Others have noted on here that Mooney might be given another year, but that might change depending on how we finish this season. Who knows. Hiring a big name coach - along with the practice facility - would be the 2 biggest bright spots in an otherwise disappointing several year stretch of Richmond basketball.

No it was their GM who was fired not the coach. That would have been something if it was the coach. Has that ever happened in any sport mid game?

No problem, watching this team play hurts me, but really feel for the kids. Never called anyone here a truther and never will. You might be a little bit of a homer, but aren't we all. ;)

My wife is out of town and both kids were asleep. Nothing on TV to watch to watch last night, so perfect opportunity to catch the second half. Except I chose to watch a DVRed This Is Us instead of watch the end of last night's game. That is where I am with this program

The defense at the end was the exact same defense we always play -- match up zone with man principles. Jacob and Grant didn't communicate properly on the switch, and therefore Funk was wide open. Same as happened against Davidson and Frampton, and same as against Duquesne with that one dude who made 5 threes, and same as with all the games before that.

Less crying viewers watching this is us than watching UofR basketball these days...

probably right, kneepad, but Grant seemed to be chasing his guyinstead of passing him off. he might have been going rogue to do anything and everything to avoid a loss. I'm sure he's frustrated.

On the bright side, its summertime here down under, wish all of you could be here.

Yes - saw you on television when I was searching for the game or more likely saw the tennis that I think was part of your itinerary? Yes the weather was great at the event..................have fun with the friendly Aussies.................served with some on an exchange program with our Coast Guard... very upbeat, friendly, and fun to be around.............

This is yet another bad loss. We need to sack the Moon Man now. Rip off the band-aid and move on with life. The world of sports is filled with stories of teams firing bad coaches in mid-season and having the players rise to the occasion and salvage the season. The longer CM is roaming the sidelines in the RC, the greater the chance of a mass exodus of players and fans.

#NoMoreMooneyTruthing

At this point in time, can anyone here come up with any good reason why we shouldn't dump Mooney now as opposed to the end of the season? I see absolutely zero upside for keeping him around any longer.

#NoMoreMooneyTruthing

What's happening now is what I was afraid would happen if we kept him beyond the OOC. We're allowing our good players to waste another half season and develop more negative thoughts about the program and more negative end-of-game habits, etc. It's going to set them back for the next two years, I fear.
