Forecast for St. Joes

Mooney still has no idea how to beat a zone. Pathetic, again.
As shown by Spiders jacking up bad shots all 2nd half. And having no idea how to pump fake or even drive to get a foul called on Hawks. Can only pray Hardt spares us a repeat of this nightmare next season . . . but not sure we should count on it.

Every year same thing we supposedly recruit shooters and they get worse as the s season goes along.

Out rebounded 44-23 (of course), and out shot from 3 (12-28 for 43%) to (6-22 for 27%). Also, of course. And, might as well add FTs: 12-13 them and 10-15 us.

Did Jabba see this one live? This should be the nail. 14 pt 2nd half lead gone, then recover & lose 7 pt lead late. Choke choke. Double tap.

And this against team playing poorly just like us but yet just recently lost 2nd leading scorer & their top 2 interior guys. We got big break not facing Kimble. And we got outrebounded 45-23 vs a team w basically no inside players. Not even a huge rebounding stat guy but that is ridiculous.

Past two games both patterns-
Davidson get behind early and lose.
St Joe's - have lead and stay ahead most of the game and then choke it away at the end.
Sadly we are extremely proficient in both of these patterns.

St. Joe's was 264 (32.4%) in 3 point O coming in. They were 12-28 (43%) tonight.

Definitely not calling him out as he plays hard, has great defensive moments, but I do think Wojik could be more aggressive when he’s open. We know by now he can’t shoot off the dribble very well yet, but how’s his range in practice? I’ve seen him open a few times and he doesn’t let it rip and a few times it’s deep, but from where Jacob shoots from. Curious if we know his true range

I have no idea how one would research this, but there can't be many coaches out there who have lost so many games with 80%+ win probabilities in the 2nd half.

We were <10% last year vs VCU and won, but that's the only example I can think of in reverse.

It's kind of scary how much I've been agreeing with you lately, VT.

I know we have disagreed a lot on here, and I realize my optimism might get a little old at times, but I do try to call it like I see it. And, I can admit when I am wrong. Looks like I was way wrong about this team. We just can't shoot, and as bad as we usually are on defense, I did not see us being this bad. I know we don't have Nick, and that is a factor, but there is no excuse to lose late leads in some games, get blown out early in others, lose to real bad teams OOC, and be so bad on defense in nearly all of them.

We should have gone at least 9-4 OOC, and should be no worse than 3-3 IC right now. So, 12-7 at worst instead of 7-12. Usually, you can look back and say we should have had another win or two. That is normal. But, not 5 more wins a third of the way through conference play.

What's so crazy to me is that until last year, in our down years we were still a .500 team and at least stood a chance against top flight teams.

Now we are literally one of the worst teams in the country. Our program has no business being this far down.

I have heard from a source that Queally is not very happy with the state of the program and is willing to spend big money to change things. This means a coaching change with a big time replacement coming in. Message me privately if you want to know more.

Same source as last year?

Mooney and his players are mired in a culture of losing.

Mooney has created a program that doesn't know how to win games, especially close games. It is so obvious that his teams are poorly prepared. Falling apart at key moments is the norm. Under Mooney's leadership, his teams can't muster up what it takes to get the W.

An old axiom that has been proven true many times is that when under stress, you instinctively revert to training. What the hell are they working on in practice? Were are the quality repetitions that should be the player "go to" when under stress?

The "culture of losing" mindset has created hesitancy, uncertainty, and thus bad decision-making in the players. Meltdown after meltdown tells me all that I need to know about the quality of the coaching. It is a joke, and nothing short of pathetic.

I don't know any of the players personally, but common sense tells me that they can't be happy. They all know how to play basketball. They have to be confused "at best" and more likely outraged over the lunacy.

As I watch this debacle unfold my position is getting more extreme. I sense that the team has likely reached the point that either Mooney is terminated soon, or there will be a mass exodus at season's end. Mid season firing is my recommendation, but if Hardt waits more than 1-day after the season ends he will be screwing up.

Hey Coach Mooney, that's what changing a defense looks like. But, you know, keep relying on Grant Golden to always be in the right spot on the perimeter, like, say, covering Taylor Funk.
