Forecast for GW

The ceiling for us with Mooney as coach is the NIT. If that's what Hardt and Queally want, then I guess they'll keep him.

On his show tonight, Mooney went on about how difficult it is to get an at-large bid because there are really only four spots for teams "at our level," whatever that is. Nevermind that the A10 has had multiple teams in the NCAAs every single year we've been in the league and almost always at least three.

So while he would have us believe we have to be one of the top four teams out of 100 competing for a bid, the reality is that we just have to be one of the three best teams in this league, and most years that will get us a bid.
I wonder how many at-large have been outside the P6 the last 7 years? And how many from the A10?
I would think low % of over all at-larges, but high % of those from A10.

That's about right. He said 4 or 5 at larges outside the power 5 (I think he might have misspoke there, it's Power 6 in basketball - the Big East gets plenty of at large bids). Last year, the A10 got 2, the AAC got 2, and the MWC got 1.

What's interesting is he said all this - about our strong scheduling in the past, and in the future - in response to a question about about this year's schedule, which he wouldn't specifically address. Bob tried to get him to talk about this year's but he wouldn't.

He did categorically state that the purpose of your non-conference schedule is to put you in position to go to the tourney. He then said something like "for some A10 teams, they have to just schedule for who they are." He'd never say it, but it was an implied admission that this was a lost season (no shot at NCAA) from the start. Even had we gone 10-3 NC, we wouldn't have a tournament resume.

Typical Mooney "competing" speak. No vision because this is just who we are. this is who you made us. After 2011, we were a commodity that other teams wanted to schedule. A-10 league member VCU can schedule a tough schedule because other teams know they are getting a high quality opponent that will offer them a chance to enhance their resume.

But yeah, other tournament teams are not really desiring to schedule a Quadrant 4 Richmond team, which is what everyone knew we were going to be this year. We are a drag on every team we play this year with tournament aspirations, lord knows if we actually beat one of those teams, we are most definitely a bad loss for them.

2019 Richmond basketball, the stain on your tournament resume.

To try to get this back on the thread topic, that was a very nice 20-point win on the road. Possibly the best defense we have played in a few years. Nice job by the team bouncing back after a tough start in A-10 play.

I'll go along with everything except the best defense in years. We did better, but a ways to go yet.

Reality check is that we match up well with GW. Our defense was better because we received help from their offensive incompetence - 32% shooting on 2 point attempts and 25% shooting on 3 pointers. We are 1-2 in A-10 play tied for eighth place with 3 other teams. The A-10 has 14 teams and in a down year for the league we probably finish somewhere near the middle of the standings unless somehow we go a great run.

We haven't run in years. Maybe you wishing for a great walk.

Yes , Mooney is getting g better and better at lowering expectations. The problem with his approach is that it becomes ingrained in our program.
It's over. Why? Because the fans are staging a French revolution and everyone sees it. The fan base and the donors are everything to a college program. They leave and the program dies.

Think no one in charge isn't watching this board? They're hearing it loud and clear from more places than this. It's over after the last second of the last game this year. If they go with Mooney for one more year the donors are gone and the donors are everything.

Having to downsize an arena (that used to fill up regularly) as an "upgrade" says everything about what's been going on. It just can't continue. UR is better than this. I'd love to have our guys play in a place where we could fill 9=10k seats. what a waste.

I want to see UR VCU games that make a difference every year. These should be great games that are THE event in RVA when they happen. The olden days were good for both. I hope to see such games again.

Guess I am letting my marathon - now half marathon - mindset which over the years has seen my "running pace" pretty much match my walking pace bleed over into message board posts.....but as a "euphemism" the word "run" still has its attraction.......................
