Using our rsFR - Jay Palmer as an example, do most of the "better" recruits that show up on an FCS team
come from small, pretty much unknown high schools? He rushed for 3,000 yards in hs, right in the back yard of Marshal, WVU, and other FBS programs and yet ended up with the Spiders. (Granted, we are a premier program at our level)
I've never seen any studies on this and was just curious if anyone on here has.

Not sure that there is a conventional formula for FCS recruiting particularly for UR.I believe we have our sights on recruits by early in their junior year, at the latest. We usually need to find/sign 15-18 each February.Danny is extremely high on prospects attending his summer camp for evaluation in order to further qualify to fill position gaps.Gotta figure for every group of 15-18 signees that we've looked closely at upwards of 75 potentials.Transcripts,GPA,SAT/ACT along with NCAA Clearinghouse likely weed out potentials early in the process.
In the case of Jay Palmer,he played as an option QB in high school. He played for a team that had mediocre records in 2012(2-8),2013(6-4),2014(4-6) and didn't participate in playoffs during the period. That was all good for us.Princeton plays in the AAA division in West Virginia. The film clearly shows his running abilities, his shiftiness and speed. Not sure of his Star rating but we will be glad that the big boys passed on his then 6-0,185 frame. It was clear from the outset that Jay was going to redshirt in 2015 in order to beef up given our plethora of running backs. That was part of DR's plan from the get-go.

As we keep winning titles and playoff games our recruiting outreach has been upgraded as we attract the interest of MAC,SunBelt ,CUSA recruits that wouldn't have looked at us 5 years ago.For that reason we will attract a higher level of FBS/BCS transfer.

Throw in our academics, it ain't a bad formula.

My Dad grew up in Princeton WVA and went to Princeton HS. They played 7 man football back then, and everyone worked in the coal mines. That's good enough for me.

Rick, I wasn't insulting Princeton HS; only using it as an example of a small school that the Bigs don't look at.
Damn, if they're a bunch of coal miners they are going to be tough kids, and we want them.

Obama has about finished off the coal mines. Guess they can play 11 man now.

32, thanks much for the great 7+ minute of Palmer highlights. If this kid is not a star running back at UR, I will be very surprised.

It also looks like he could be an outstanding kick-returner too. The fact that he was a kick-returner, and a "holder" for the kicking team also suggests that he has very good hands. I can just see this kid catching passes for us, out of the backfield, and making people miss. I can also see some designed running back option passes, where his passing skills lead to some wide open receptions. We just have to find a way to use this kid's multiple talents!

Does anyone know what his speed is? He flat-out out-runs everyone on the team in some of the early segments of the video, but that may have something to do with the "level" of play. If he is nearly as fast as he looks in this video (4.5?), and as elusive, we will have a very capable replacement for JG. I am predicting great things from this young man, and hope to see a full sampling of his skill-set on Saturday.

K, don't write off coal mines just yet, companies already online and several more building plants which turn coal into gasoline which at this point can be retailed at about 58 cents per gallon. let's keep those fossil fuels going.....HA!. what is amazing is that we are going to be on fossil fuels long after any of us are still walking the earth. we need to get out heads out of the sand and embrace our resources not destroy them.

Great thread Annapolis. Great footage 32. A great example of how DR and crew have been able to pick up overlooked studs. I look forward to Palmer's growth and performance on the field for the Spiders. Kids like this make me more excited than ever about the next several upcoming football seasons at UR. With the incoming freshmen, the current coaching staff and the renewed fan support, I think we should all see that we are building a perennial FCS national contender.
