Fan support

I keep hearing on this board how Richmond is losing fan support, everyone is negative on the program and I could go on. Those comments are contradicted by attendance numbers, which were pretty impressive. Richmond had its highest national attendance rank in 30 years, but let's not let facts get in the way. This is a good article.

Easy to get fans in the seats when you offer up $5 tickets and free kids tickets every night. Their literally is no cheaper family entertainment option in town than a UR spiders game.

We were duped this year and the year before there was zero attendance. Let’s see how many show up next year. What do you think a 9 and 22 team will bring in, $5 or not?

This subject deserves it own post. It is very impressive how loyal our fan base is. Sorry if it upsets some of you.

I have found the crowd to be electrifying during some of the games. I obviously don't have any metrics to prove it, but I think the fan's have been the loudest of any previous season. The games have been very fun to attend.

I do agree that us old UR fans are loyal to a fault. Good people that just want to enjoy 16 safe nights in our beautiful arena while cheering on the 15 young men that represent us. We certainly aren’t going to Costco and watch a game as an alternative, and have seen many A-10 games and other conferences where they play in high school gyms with a couple hundred fans. We are lucky us old people keep coming, even though there will be less and less as time goes on. Us old fogies want to win!

80s would get more excited about us raising an attendance banner than an NCAA banner.
Lots of rooms for banner up in the rafters these days. But it up there with our Kenpom Top 100 banners and SRS banner. I'm sure that will be moving for our recruits. Much more moving than seeing us play in the NCAA tournament, I suspect. Lol.

it's funny to read people complaining about cheap tickets. I remember a while ago on this board, before the RC renovations that reduced seats, many of us were begging to do whatever was necessary to get more people to games to improve the gameday experience. we talked about giveaways to local schools to attract young fans. I think the $5 tickets is great. more butts in seats is better for UR and the players. I'm not all that concerned with the revenue stream here.

attendance doesn't mean everything is perfect. but I hope the cheap tickets have attracted new fans who become long term fans. even if they're only fans for $5.

The people complaining about ticket prices were the long time Spider faithful season ticket holders who were paying $20, $25, $30+ for tickets, and would go to the games surrounded by the $5 folks. And the remarks about losing fan support is also addressing these same long time season ticket holding fans. I have had season tickets for years, but no more after this year until Mooney is gone gone gone....

I was on the perfect attendance banner on the big screen this year. I was pretty proud of that. There weren’t many of us up there, understandably so.

speaking of fan support it will be interesting to see how we represent in game vs. rival 2 hours away in a 1 & done setting. That might be a better barometer. what will be our numbers and how many times over that will vcu have...4? 5? Anecdotally I know a lot of people who were excited pre-season but did not go.

X2.

Let them treat us as season ticket holders the same they do financially as the casual entertainment crowd paying $5 a game.

I'm really going to rethink my season tickets for next year. There were unsold tickets this year around me. So it's not like people are knocking the doors down for season tickets.

I'd rather see '80's address on court failures than another rah rah thread.

I agree with this but I do think there’s some PR warfare going on though to suggest that the program is somehow “healthy” as evidenced by attendance.

regardless, I applaud the effort to get butts in seats, and do hope we are building fans not just attendees.

80's, I never attack fellow posters so hope this is not interpreted as such toward you. BUT you defend a guy that wins 55% of the time, hasn't won a regular season A10 championship in 17 years, and has not taken our storied program to the NCAA's in over a decade. Hope these are not now or ever Richmond standards.

Folks are overwhelmingly negative on this board bc many remember when we were a relevant program. We expect more. Pleeze quit sprinkling sugar on a turd.

During the press conference Golden mentioned the crowd support at the A10 Tournament and how it helped the team. The Spider tickets allotment for today sold out quickly, but general admissions tickets still available. Thanks to all the Spiders who are making the trip to DC!

I am not starting today and likely won't see the floor, but damn, I'm nervous ;).

After wandering in the desert for over a decade, let's take care of "unfinished business" today.

Be loud! Be proud! Go Spiders!
No storming?
