Expectations

I think we should be able to aim to make the tournament every year. I certainly would like to have it be every other year, with NIT a near constant guarantee year in, year out.

I certainly do not think it should be once every 7 years. Or 8 years. Or....

Realistically tourney every other year or 2 out of 5.

Also think we should be progressing as a program, pushing towards a regular NCAA team. I hate the sentiment of “we’re a mid major” or “well we can’t realistically expect more” or anything of the sort.

I looked at how often teams from each conference go to the NCAAs on average, and found that conferences group very clearly into tiers.

Tier 1: ACC, B12, BE. Each team goes to the NCAAs 2 out of every 3 years on average.
Tier 2: B10, P12, SEC. Bids in 2 out of every 5 years.
Tier 3: A10, AAC. Bids in 2 out of every 9 years.
Tier 4: MWC, MVC. Bids in 2 of every 13 years.
Tier 5: Everyone else. Bids once every 10-12 years.

I think most people on this board have the expectation of tier 2. We are currently looking like tier 4. The A10 is teir 3.

Looks like we fit into Tier 3, along with other A10 teams.

It’s a reasonable goal to have each 4 year player that walks through out doors to expect to play in the tournament. Our last freshmen to see the tournament were Cedric Lindsay and Derrick Williams.

Interesting chart but not very meaningful. Just take the A-10 for an example, when was the last time Fordham or Dusquesne made it to the dance. Bottom feeders pull down the average

What would most think of a 12 year cycle of 3 NCAA, 6, NIT, 3 Miss?

And teams at the top pull the average up. Here is the distribution of bids over the last 9 years for A10 teams:

7 Bids: 1 team
4 bids: 2 teams
3 bids: 1 team
2 bids: 4 teams
1 bid: 4 teams
0 bids: 2 teams

I think 2 bids in 9 years does a very good job at representing the bid rate in the A10, it is actually the median, mode, and average!

so is your goal to be an average team? right now we are preforming below average.

I am not saying it is my goal to go 2 out of every 9 years, I'm just trying to show what the performance of the average team in each conference is so there are some numbers for comparison in the conversation. Most people on this board expect us to be better than the average A10 team, me included.

I think most would find this to be very acceptable. This is why the premise of this thread, started by another paid propagandist is sort of insulting. The inner circle thinks our fanbase is made up of overly emotional, irrational dolts. I find that even more grating than the mediocre results they generate.

Liked for the stats terms. Not what it demonstrates!

Respectfully, we need to stop granting paid propagandists cover on the message board.

If it continues as is, we might as well just let RichmondSpiders.com to have its own message board. There will be no point in having our online community.

You know that's what the staff wants because they are finally wising up to their PR problem. Think about that.

Can you elaborate on this latest conspiracy theory please? Seriously, what the heck are you talking about?

We either have an online community of free thinkers that don't draw a paycheck from Richmond basketball or we don't.

Who exactly are these "paid propagandists? Assume what you want. That is your choice if you want to look foolish on here. I will assume we don't because I do not think there is a coach out there who cares what a bunch of message board posters think.

Just as I thought. You got called out and could not back anything up. You said, "Respectfully, we need to stop granting paid propagandists cover on the message board." Really? Who? If you post something as fact, at least put some names to it. And, maybe just a little evidence would help. What a joke.

That’s some sobering data.

What is the goal, if you cannot destroy the program you destroy the boards? Why?

Not sure what is being implied here.

The program has self-destructed and didnt need anyone's help except the excessive coddling of some.

Your and my opinion of what would cause the "destruction" of the message board are two pretty different things I guess.

I'll take another month off or more off so everyone can go back to talking to the Spider Social media account in bliss.

Wow, this board has turned into a bunch of thin skinned posters and moderators. We're all adults here and a little back and forth isn't hurting anyone as long as it doesn't go too far and I don't think anyone has. It's the off season so lighten up.:)

Destroy the program? Can't see how the posters that are less than happy with the direction of the program can be seen as wanting to destroy the program - if anything, the complete opposite is wanted - the success of the program.

Broc, it's getting to be a joke. Questioning this mediocre effort, ability, and coaching by a mediocre coach is destroying the program. And Mo didn't call anyone out, but is attacked by a certain fraudulent poster. Same poster who will not respond to well respected poster Coach Fezz's questions. I believe Fezz. I believe Fezz. Fezz is legend, this new poster is sketchy at best.

Follow the thread. Mo went off topic not once, not twice, but three times with another conspiracy theory. I then asked him a question he could not answer, and asked if he could back up what he said. I did not attack him, and there is nothing fraudulent or sketchy about me. That being said, can you make up your mind? Am I new or not? A week ago, you said I was new. Then, a few days later, you went off on me as a new poster, but then said you were not talking about me because I have been around since 2016 and was not new. Now, tonight, I am new again?

Yo VT, do you have to respond to every effing post? That's how I know you're not on the coaching staff because you have way too much free time. Hmmm.....

No, not on the coaching staff, only a "paid propagandist", remember? Come on, follow along. But, I never get called out on here, so why should I ever respond to anything, right? I will respond to who I want, when I want. Feel free to ignore me if it bothers you this much.

I'm with Moliva on this one--I don't recall ever seeing anyone on here saying that we should make the tournament every single year. This thread is purely for baiting people the way it was written.

To the substance of the question, and ignoring the editorializing...

I agree with the sentiment that we should have the expectation that every 4 year player gets at least one tournament experience.

If I overreacted with my comment about destroying the program I apologize to the community. But frankly I don't understand the people that cannot find anything positive, or even neutral, to say, nor do I understand the need to attack a person that says something remotely positive.

I don't think many people are happy with the status of the program at this time. But I do believe that constant negativity does not help the program, hence my destroy the program comment.

I don't want Mo or anyone else to leave the board, I try to allow open discourse. But name calling, attacking others is not healthy for the boards. I have seen this lead to the destruction of other boards, I don't want that to happen here.

Good morning ! Celtics play great team basketball yes? something nice to watch . I am enjoying your posts.

This thread was started by someone with 5 posts, and baited posters with a fallacy.
The thread they started with their very first post was also a bait thread promptly locked by moderators.
Not the first poster to do this (remember "vicious personal attacks on kids?") and I can't fault Mo for reacting as he did.

That said, realistic expectations:
  • Finish higher than T-3rd at least once in 13 years?
  • Every four-year athlete should get to go to the tourney at least once.
  • Make the A-10 tourney final every 5 years or so
  • Win more than 1 game per season against power conference opponents. This should not be unrealistic for a top half A10 team, especially when scheduling bottom half power conf opponents.
  • Similarly, get a couple Quadrant 1 and Quadrant 2 victories; otherwise, a Top 25 OOC SOS is irrelevant.
