Expectations with 3PT Distance Increasing

The D1 average is down from 34.4% to 32.2% so far this year. A 2.2% difference in 3FG% is the difference between the 100th best 3FG team and the 220th, which seems pretty significant to me.

Interesting stats. Goes to show that just because we shot well in game one doesn't mean others have.

I do wonder though is the 34.4% from last year full season vs. only the first week this year? If so, do you have any way of pulling only the first week of last year to compare?

This has crept back up to 33.52%. Interesting stat to look at this year.

What would be more interesting would be to see the teams who have increased their % by 5 or more...
There are a few...
UR 34.7 to 40.4

The 34.2 number I initially posted from kenpom presently sits at 32.9 at that site. Continue expecting that number won't reach 34.2 at season's end.

Thanks. Yep and that's the median # per your first post. Just to clarify I was posting NCAA average in response to fan2011 who was using the average. NCAA uses average in their cumulative stats. I don't dispute that median is the better tool. The median has a slightly wider gap than the mean, comparing 2018-19 to 2019-20.

Holding steady now at 33.55 nationally (cumulative average across all NCAA not kenpom median).

Spiders at 37.1. 34th in the country.

I am seeing 33.2, where are you getting 33.55?

The percentage of shots that are 3 pointers are also down slightly from 38.7% to 37.6%

right off the NCAA stats website, data thru 1/23. I would link but you have to choose tab/filters to get it. The URL throws an error, have to do it manual. Where r you looking?

edit - go to the ncaa stats .org site not their .com one

Does that include games against non-D1 opponents? That could be the difference.

Still holding steady at 33.47 nationally (cumulative average across all NCAA not median).

Spiders have dropped off some to 36% but 49th in country. Also now 20th in FT % at 76.7.

Looks like only 25 teams are 37% or better, and 51 teams are 36% or better. Last year, 54 teams were 37% or better, and 92 teams were 36% or better. Last year, only 13 teams shot 30% or lower. This year 35 of them are doing that.

I think some of this has to do with the lack of emphasis on freedom of movement this year. Over the past few years, refs had been instructed to be quick with the whistle on hand checking/arm bars on runners through the lane. This year, physicality on defense has been allowed to a greater extent, making it harder to take a defender off the dribble/run free through the lane. I think this has also an an effect on open looks that the last few years were more abundant.

As the regular season comes to an end, as close as it can be to the same difference.
