@Duquesne 2/01

I was legitimately going to come on here (before even reading the stream) and say that Randolph looks like he has the potential to be a scorer. Good mentality, smooth stroke, etc. Right now, just kind of deferring to the older players on the court, but not to the same level as Grace and Sal did for 2 years. I kinda like what I see there.

Not to mention, he seems like one of the most hyped guys on the bench every game. That level of energy is always welcome on my team.

So now I felt compelled to do it, since apparently when you are passed the ball with 2 seconds on the shot clock while covered at the three point line and have to try and scramble up a shot but commit a turnover, that makes you a waste of space???? I sort of already consider the source, but that seemed like quite an escalation, even for SpiderK.

Yes. Consider the source. I think most of us are really glad to see Randolph getting time. Is he lighting it up out there, no? He is getting his first meaningful minutes on a very senior laden team. He is playing hard and does not seem overwhelmed by the moment. I can and do get on Mooney for a whole litany of things, but I am really glad that he is finding some meaningful time for Randolph. He is going to be a big part of the team for the next 3 years, so getting him experience this year is most definitely a positive thing.

I think Marcus looks good. glad he's getting a little burn.

we graduate a lot and some here think we'll be awful next season, but I'm excited for that team.

I think there's a lot of young talent on the roster. we just don't know what they can do yet when put in bigger roles.
Talent is not our issue. Management of that talent and making a cohesive quality team out of it though, as always is. The excitement level for every year is always mitigated by the fact that any Mooney coached teams will have gaping weaknesses that will be exploited by other teams at the worst possible times.

And we will never adapt. The plan for the season that is formulated in the summer months is the plan and NOTHING will alter it.

I still remember his grappling over possession of the ball with a much larger GA ST player in his first minute as a spider. I think we can use that kind of aggressiveness.

Yep, I am excited for the young guys too - looks like a lot of potential.

But as usual, gaping holes on the inside. Mooney's ability to recruit talented or athletic interior players over 6'7 has regressed year by year. I mean Walz looks like a solid prospect, but very little else lately.

And as 97 notes, Mooney's inability to put it all together, coach defense, and adapt puts a huge damper on things if he is back.

New coach comes in, keeps the freshman, Dji and Burton, and gets some exciting transfers and would be super excited for next season. Mooney back, blahhh.

The cupboard is not bare for a new coach. A few of these guys may decide to transfer (but all of the freshman, just redshirted, so do they really want to now switch schools now. Just need a coach who can bring out the best in them collectively.

Don’t forget he played well in practice.

It’s probably not worth responding to this but I spent the time re-watching his 3 minutes against VCU (to make sure I wasn’t being overly harsh) and they were not good. He took a bad shot, inexplicably stepped on the out of bounds line when receiving a pass, let his assignment cut behind him for an easy slam, and didn’t take a foul during a fast break that resulted in another layup. It was this performance that I think caused some of us to not want to play a freshman at a critical point in the Duquesne game.

While I think he may turn out to be a good player, I don’t understand how you can claim he has the potential to be a scorer at this point. He hasn’t scored a basket in his last 3 games in over 10 minutes of play.

I’ll continue to root for him, but I don’t think asking for him to be taken out of a game was inappropriate.

I would say that is a way more fairer critique than simply "he's a waste of space" All of the mistakes you listed are done by our vets as esp. getting beat or losing their man. The young guys don't get the benefit of the doubt from my short time here. That plays a role bc they are always looking over their shoulder. Just watch when a young guy is on the court and they make a mistake...where is the 1st place they look too, the bench. Bc they know they are prob about to get pulled. I would argue that weighs on a young guy. Marcus was put in during the 1st half correct?(having trouble remembering) Is that really a critical time? ...as coach I always would try things early and if they didn't work out...not to much damage was done.

Agreed with all your points. I’ve also commented in the past that it’s ridiculous how quick Mooney pulls the younger players out of the game while never seemingly punishing lack of effort or atrocious defense! And to be clear, I’ve never once said he was a waste of space; just he shouldn’t have been playing at a (debatably) critical time in the Duquesne game given performance against VCU. Many of the same people who took offense to my post also have said something similar things about Wilson — and no offense is worse than hypocrisy!

I hear you. I was reacting more to the VCU game, where I simply liked the look of his jumper, even if it didn't go in. And we've had a number of freshman who've not been bold enough to take a shot whilst the Golden/Gilyard/Sherod/Francis crew has been on the floor. So I liked the confidence, I liked the look of the stroke, the shot was soft (I think both kind of bounced around but spilled out), even if the results were not there. I also think he looks the part athletically--seems bouncy and active on D.

Count me in the group that wants to see Randolph get some minutes every game from here on out. He is young and he got some minutes in a huge rivalry game and made some errors. Big deal, it is experience and he needs it. This is how he learns and gets better. Next time, perhaps he is more ready for the moment.
