Do we have a big man who can dunk off a standstill?

I liked how Grant came out of the game and Cayo replaced him and Robert Fish said we were "going small". Robert, this is the effing roster!

So we're down 2 slams to zip so far. But Longwood was a tough athletic test. Hopefully Mooney's recruits stack up more evenly against St. Francis.

And I believe rumor has it our best athlete is the kid from Finland - Andre - but he only played 2 minutes against Longwood. Hopefully his time increases as the season goes on along with others.

Unfortunately work barred me from attending today’s game, but I understand we were outslammed 1-0. Hope to register our first dunk of the season in our third game this Friday.

Wow, I know dunks don't mean a ton, but that just shows the lack of recruiting. I remember a game circa 1990 we had 8 slams, and we liked it. Where is Kevin Smith when you need him.

Eric Poole comes to mind. I'll never forget one rebound-slam from halfway the the foul line....

While I agree that dunks don't win games, this does show what is going to be an inability to play with top teams. Lack of athleticism is due to lack of recruiting. When you lose out on the most athletic guys with skill, you end up with moderately athletic guys with skill. It really really helps to have guys like Kevin Smith on your roster. He made so many winning plays for the Spiders. Then you had a guy like Curtis Blair - he had skill and athleticism and went to NCAA's. Oh and so did Kevin Smith. It helps, it helps.

Dunks aren’t worth more than other buckets on the scoreboard but they’re pure gold when it comes to crowd support.

I wish Grant would play a little more stronger on the inside. With his height and size you would think he would be more of a inside presence. He is often fading away from the basket and shooting jump shots. Would love to see him just go up strong and just dunk it.

I'm tired of seeing our bigs bulk up. Fezz is right. Geriot did the same thing and he did nothing until he trimmed back down his senior year. Cline was explosive his senior year when he dropped the weight. I'm also tired of seeing Golden start the game off outside, bricking 3s. Make your presence INSIDE, and then move out later after things open up.

Amen brother. I don’t know this but I suspect this is a coaching/strategy thing. It really makes no sense. “Hey, let’s put you out here where you’re mediocre and hope we catch them offguard.”

Our offense, at its best, moves through grant in the high post. His skills as a passer and our movement is what gives us an advantage most nights.

That being said, grant needs discipline to not jack 3’s. But if you’re looking for a 1980’s version of basketball with defined positions and Grant as a 5 in the low post for 90% of the offensive possessions, you are going to be disappointed this year.

I know, some times things are too easy for everyone else to see I guess. My local hs team had the same thing a few years back. This kid was only 6'1 but was a beast in our small conference, but they would have him shooting threes every game to start, and inevitably fall behind. When they would put him on the block he would get so many easy opporutunities.

Not sure if you were at Friday’s game, but the situation of which I speak had grant sitting in the corner. Yes the offense runs through him in the high post but there were multiple situations where he shot 3balls from the corner or elbow. Those aren’t the places I think grant is going to have a ton of success from.

CM is out-thinking himself doing that when we would be better off legitimately establishing Grant inside early, not the other way around.

I agree that we don't want our bigs too heavy/bulked up but I don't think it's necessarily a goal or by design.

From what i remember, TJ showed up from Niagara with some baby fat and worked himself in to better shape each year he was here.

And correct me if I'm wrong but didn't Geriot add a lot of weight while he was out injured?

Geriot did bulk up when he missed a year due to his injury. But it wasn't fat, he obviously spent a lot of time in the weight room. The coaches should have monitored this and realized what was happening to his body.

Come on Rick, now you are expecting Mooney to be accountable? He never takes full accountability, other than in a half assed way. Just like his public goals are to get better. And we need to really do X better next game, and need to play X more, etx etc.

we're not running plays to get Grant 3 pointers. he's been open out there in the flow of the offense. I actually want him to take that. I just hope he starts making some. it changes everything.

I think Nathan's going to have to shoot a little too. easy to defend and help off of him if he only drives. they have tape on him now. based on how much Nathan's all around game has improved, I'm sure his shooting has improved as well. he's put in work.

We may not be running plays to get Grant 3 pointers, but we are definitely running plays to put him on the perimeter to establish that he's an inside/outside threat. This theory is good if he hits his 3 pointers. So far, he hasn't, so I'd argue that we change that plan.

he's taken 5 three pointers in 3 games. that's not outrageous to me.

I wouldn't give up on him being a multi dimensional threat. he's a big time player. he'll hit shots. he's missing mid range shots too right now, but still shooting a solid .500. when he gets it going it'll force real defensive problems.

if we tell everyone who isn't hitting from 3 to stop shooting them, we really limit our options. can't just have Nick and Jacob shooting from outside.

I’m not saying he’s taking a lot of three pointers. Nor am I saying he shouldn’t take three pointers. All I’m saying is, do not start him outside in the corner intentionally. This should not be a controversial suggestion.

I missed the first half, but counted zero slams in the second. Assuming we didn’t have any in the first, that leaves us with none on the season. One can trot out the view that slams are worth as much as a layup, but they are also a decent proxy for overall athleticism. And it’s clear we’re woefully deficient. This deficiency is also evident in our inability to rebound, defend, and finish near the basket. Our recruiting needs to improve badly based on what I see out there.

Yes, been watching a fair amount of hoops this season, and we just don't have the strength, athleticism, quickness to guard people. Mooney seems to either recruit athletic players - light on skill, or skilled players light on athleticism.
