Dayton 87 Richmond 79 - We Couldn't Stop the Flyer Runs

No, I meant Mugsy, who had a 40+ vertical but couldn't dunk because he couldn't hold on to the ball. Everybody has an excuse. Spud won an NBA dunk contest if memory serves.
You sure you are not talking about Spud and his vertical leap. Never knew Mugsy to show much hops. Always was funny seeing Mugsy and his teammates over at the Mall and the kids would come up and walk with them, and most were as tall or taller than Mugsy.

Spud had a 46" vertical, Mugsy 44". Spud dunked, Bugsy's hands were too small to palm the ball therefore he never dunked in an NBA game. I was a fan of both.

"why do you need to palm the ball?" - Spud

He has had a number of lay-ups either lip out or get blocked this year. That doesn't happen if you dunk it. I'm not asking him to dunk over people, I am saying that he has opportunities to go up and throw down a two hander pretty easily but he doesn't and that has cost us points in a number of games this year.

I think I understand a little bit of what your saying 97. I don't think you can expect Grant to dunk a lot as this is not his game, but I do think he can be more aggressive and physical. Example from the Dayton in 2 different plays.
I believe it was Grant in the first half posted up and backed down Obi, and at one point he lowered his shoulder right into Obi and knocked him back a few feet. Might have been charge, might have been good acting by Obi - who knows. Refs called nothing and Grant had an easy layup. Point here - he was physical, he took the action right to Obi. Even if he would have gotten a charge - I would have been okay with it. Cause at the time Obi had 1 foul and at that point - you need to go right at him, be physical, and make the refs make a call. This time they didn't, and he got an uncontested layup.
Play 2 - total opposite. Grant posted up and got to the middle of the lane, and Obi was right on him. Grant pumped fake and head faked about 5 times and Obi just stood there like a Dad does to their toddler child. Finally - when Grant decided to shoot - Obi just swatted that thing away like he was playing with a bunch of little kids. In this instance - he tried to finesse him, rather than go right at him and be physical.
I would tell Grant to watch Tim Duncan tape from college. Duncan was lighter and more athletic, but he had the ability to use his body to create angles and get the advantage over his defender. He also knew when to face up his defender and use the bank shot that made him a hall of famer. I don't expect Grant to dunk over people and think he is a good player for the Spiders, but I do agree at times - he shies away from the contact and tries to avoid it rather than invite it with his big frame, which is one of his biggest advantages.

I'm still trying to make sense of your logic that he actually prefers to finesse the ball over dunking despite knowing that the dunk is the higher percentage play.

he doesn't want to offend the defender.

How did that work against LaSalle?
The laughing down the court after a basket. No wonder it got testy near the end of game. As smart as he is, GG has no clue how to work officials. The hissy fits are classic. I thought Mooney would get in his ear by now, but seeing the coach against Dayton, the apple didn't fall far from the tree. And lately it seems JG has acquired the virus. And Jacob is one of the best "gets it" kids I have seen play. Maybe Mooney should tell JG your the best defensive anticipator I seen in all my years of coaching, but you do commit fouls on occasion.

are you talking about the baseline play when Grant ended up on the floor and argued for the foul call? I believe he used his dribble, pump faked twice, couldn't get Toppin in the air, so Grant practically dove at him to get contact. I don't think he try to avoid contact at all. but yes, Toppin blocked it easily. and he avoided the foul too. he's good.

I think that was a different play, but Grant was plenty aggressive there. The no-call was correct, even though that was the play that Mooney got T'd up on.

I thought Toppin was in the air on the Mooney T. That is why Golden & Mooney were upset even if Golden obviously initiated the contact.
Must have been my red & blue glasses. Wait that is both teams...you know what I meant.

lol. agreed he was in the air. think that's ok these days.

Yeah, me too. Why he would not go with a higher percentage play is beyond me, but yet he does.
