Our team seems to get better each year relative to the competition as the season progresses. Following our a few interesting observations since conference play started.
  • Despite having 3 of our top 8 players on the DL we are in first place at 3-1. (BTW, when you lose 3 of our top players your points and minutes from the bench are going to go down.)
  • Our free throw shooting has improve significantly. We are shooting 77.8% and Cato is shooting 81.3% on 13 for 16 shooting. Both Blake and Gilly are over 90%
  • We have had 33 turnovers verse 61 for opponents
  • We have had 32 steels verses 15 for opponents
  • We have had 58 assist verses 38 for opponents
  • Our 3 point shooting has improved to 38%, while our defense against 3 PT has improved to 30%. Gilly has improved significantly and been making 42.3%
The big negative is that we are getting out rebounded 28.5 to 35

Though UR's conference stats are good, above main reason for loss to Bonny. Need to spy on McKillop on how he gets team to DEFENSIVELY rebound well. I have no issue with Mooney's team deficiency with regards to offensive rebounding.

Davidson's defensive efficiency is 137. Ours is 91. Offensive efficiency we are 22 and they are 32. And, they lost to us and Dayton already IC.

Dayton was 11-25 from 3 against them and we were 8-16 from 3 against them. Maybe they should pay a little more attention to 3 point shooters and a little less attention worrying about a defensive rebound?

Think Davidson plays under the "theory" that they will outscore the opposition in number of 3's made.....................

supposedly we don't offensive rebound at all. we just run back. and supposedly we don't defensive rebound well.

so why in conference play have opponents only had 2 more offensive rebounds than us per game?

I think we're rebounding pretty well. Burton's been a huge boost.

We are 297 in rebounding margin. So that’s pretty weak. It does suggest that we don’t need to be glass cleaners to win.

yes, we win due to turnover margin.
we're shooting pretty poorly leading to the other teams getting a lot of defensive rebounds.

Huh? We're 33rd in the country in FG percentage.
hmm. go figure. guess it feels like we aren't shooting well because our starting guards who have taken 300 of our 700 shots aren't shooting as well as they're capable of.

if they revert to their averages, then I'll feel we're shooting well. and we'll certainly be winning.

4700, you gave out good positive stats for Mooney's team but don't know how it related to what I posted?

In reply to UR80s big negative statement about UR's rebounding issues, I posted a couple of FACTS explained below with regards to it. And again for me it's all about at the defensive end.

1) UR deficiency at defensive rebounding was culprit in loss to Bonny
2) If McKillop was Spider coach, defensive rebounding would be much improved

..... Bonny had 4 offensive rebounds in the last 4:55 of the game leading to 6 points. Going by NCAA stats McKillop's team year-in-year out in proficient at defensive rebounding.

We counter our lack of defensive rebounding with 3 point shooting. Point being - yes, we will give up offensive rebounds and 2nd chance possessions, but if you make enough 3's - this negates that advantage. This was how Belein did at UR and how Mooney does it too. I always think - if UR can keep the offensive rebounds for the opposing team 10 or under - that is good for us.

Bonnies - we gave up 12 (and a lot of key ones down the stretch as mentioned) and we only shot 25% from deep. Not a good recipe. The other thing that sometimes hurts us in these games - free throw shooting. We were 14-21 that game - not that I think we will make them all, but in some of our losses - we shoot poorly from the line, which magnifies the rebounding issues.
