Coaching incompetence

those things are institutional and we were doing them pre-Moon. Our facilities, resources, spending on a comparative level were all high prior. Actually Moon salary has probably increased % wise the most over that time. Yes u need those other things, but u absolutely also need the right coach. To me just ironic u make those statements re: elevation with Moon's results staring us in the face.
I am tired of making my same talking points over and over again so I am not going to get into more at this time. I will say though that I am not “pro Mooney”. I am pro Richmond basketball and also balancing the belief that we should push ourselves to be the best and also realistic about our expectations given our school profile. If we continue to stink like this for a couple more years, you and I can grab some drinks after a game and talk about who we want our new coach to be.

some revisionist history there imo or as 8legs said maybe someone got a hold of your account.

My treat on the drinks. me 4700 and spider23, whom I've never had the pleasure of meeting b4 either, were trending to do same at Pig Beach in Brooklyn b4 a10 tourney one year. Then iirc 4700 ghosted us. Maybe he had other pregame responsbilities idk. Hey our meeting could be n Lewisboro, PA watching Mooney's nephew & son running our backcourt

Deal. Better yet, we can meet at MSG for the Big East tournament after Richmond is invited 😁

Our school profile was much better 30 years ago, don't know if you were around then.

30 years ago we were supportive, and win or loose we loved our school and supported our
teams, Win or loose we were far less negative than those on this board.
If you’re a supporter of Coach Mooney, you’re demeaned as if you’re a terrible person. Some
are so proud of their negativity they post Billboards that got national ridicule.
Yes, 30 years ago our fans were supporters.

Well maybe, but we also opted not to extend an underperforming coach 30(ish) years ago. I recall friends of mine being pretty negative at the time, there just wasn’t an internet forum to give voice to that negativity.

Fixing the negativity is 100% about winning, I assure you the complaints would mostly dry up.

30 years ago, it was Bill Dooley, and I PROMISE you there was the same irritation and negativity. He was a good dude, a good recruiter, a good developer of big men, and an abysmal in game head coach. We underachieved for 4 years, our AD recognized underachievement when he saw it, and Dooley was out.

We weren't bad supporters then, and we aren't bad supporters now. We wanted to win, and believed there was someone better for the job than the guy currently in charge.

Unless something miraculous happens (again) this season we are looking at one NCAA tournament trip in the past 14 seasons. How much further does that need to slide before you admit the possibility that the billboard guys were right? 1 in 20? 1 in 25?

If you actually answer that question and not avoid it then we can start talking about our record against VCU.

Annap seems like a revisionist era type of guy. Heck I remember being in school, a little more than 30 years ago :), and guys ripping Tarrant for not playing one guy over another. And shoot, back then you could call into his show, without being that one guy, and they would take your call. Now, moon is such a coward he will only take calls or questions that are well vetted. Tarrant would just take a call and answer your question. Everything about the soft moon regime reeks of pampered and entitled.

I remember Lew Mills, and Bill Dooley, two coaches of failure. But the negativity wasn’t
as vicious as this board has become. Nor, in the history of 100+ years of Spider basketball
are we a historic basketball power.

Hold on one second Annap, I was here doing Lew Mills, Carl Sloan era. You cannot prove to me there was not an outward sign at games of disgruntled fans towards Coach Mills. I remember fire Lew signs held up in the RC at games and being a freshmen, I had never seen anything like that in person. My Dad even spoke of letters to the sports editors asking for a change at Richmond.

OK Chris Mooney is a good guy, well liked by majority of his players, but not a high level recruiter or strong in game coach who adapts quickly to changing situations. After 20 years, we need some new blood and fire. What is his percentage of time finishing in the top 25% of A10? Percentage of times making either the NIT and NCAA? What would you say is an acceptable figure? To top this off, we have an Administration that claims to want success, but shows little intestinal fortitude in following up on that. Yes, as a UR sports fan, we demand excellence and especially, consistency. Just look at Rousell and how he is growing the women's program. We are now seeing more than 100-200 fans in the seats due to the fact we are winning and we continue to improve. Now the question is whether or not we are going to be able to hold onto him much longer.

In retrospect, I'm not sure whether I'm proud of it or not, I critiqued Lew Mills to such an extent that he flipped me the bird leaving the court at halftime. Mooney has it easy by comparison.

The more you don’t participate in the ncaa tournament and wins over VCU the easier it gets to justify the current apathy . I was lucky enough to be at UR when a coaching change was made (Dooley to Beilein) before my senior year. It’s extremely sad to me that so many graduating classes since mine have not been able to experience a run in March. Those types of runs galvanize school spirit and pride and connect all spiders. We not only haven’t had many of those runs but the administration/athletic department seems to be happy with not having many and not even trying to have more. I’m not even negative anymore because nothing is going to change as we all know.

what were the message boards like under Mills and Dooley?

Also, did you miss when Mooney said "we've been able to keep Richmond as one of the top basketball programs in the nation". the NATION!

The fact that we were having to have these discussions during the same calendar year in which we won the regular season title tells you all you need to know. We reached one of the highest highs, then fell right on our face.

Are we sure that he didn't really say "We've been able to keep Richmond as one of the basketball programs in the nation" and our PR staff didn't just edit an error into that quote?

Richmond has been a developmental school, where we recruit players and coach them up. It would take 2 to 3 years for players to mature. With the advent of the player portal, NIL and payments to players, we don't have that luxury. Last year the team had an outstanding regular season. There was more team chemistry in place. This year there seems to be no team chemistry and no consistency.
