CM’s coaching philosophy from his own quotes in RTD

“Everybody has a responsibility. If you play one minute or 20 minutes, everybody has a responsibility. Every coach has a responsibility. What could we have done to better prepare ourselves?” UR coach Chris Mooney said.

Did the RTD leave out his response to his own question? So much like 47, never accepting any self responsibility.

Obviously, you don’t ever want to have a game like this,” Mooney said. “Everything has to be instructive, and hopefully we’ll be better because of it and not hang our heads but get to work and try to see the things we can improve upon and give ourselves better chances to compete in games.”

Yes I know this was in another thread but it needs to be front and center, “compete in games,” not win games. Yes there is a chasm between the two goals, one is success and one is merely an accepted chance od success.

“Aim at Heaven and you will get earth ‘thrown in’: aim at earth and you will get neither.”

Yes. I noted that as well in the quotes. The focus was entirely on the players. It has always been that way. Again, we have a leadership school and leadership 101, says the buck stops with me. Good leaders always give credit to others and take the blame for failure.

At least go 50/50 haha.

Will say, not a fan of the way Cronin throws players under the bus. BUT, it did seem to work, I think they have won 6 in a row, with three ranked teams in time since he did that.

Mooney is great at deflecting criticism, and blaming the system. I think if we had a big donor that came up and said: "I have 5 million for you to use to buy best players possible" he would defer, as that would take away an excuse.

100% he is a system blamer. That is his bread and butter. Anyone in the business world want to hire someone to run their company who constantly is like well the deck is stacked against us and this why we are what we are. No of course you would never hire someone like that to run your company. But we got that guy running our MBB program.

Exactly, to use my ol Dutcher comparison. Like a lot of coaches, he is not crazy about the system, but he says that is what we are dealing with and we have to adapt and learn how to thrive. Mooney and Hardt are still adjusting, and still thinking about it, and deflecting. In the last two years in portal, SDSU lost starting PG to become starting at PG at Kentucky, starting wing to become starting wing at Ohio State, Starting PF to bench at UVA :) and I think one more I forget. But Dutcher does not sit there and blame the system. Mooney is a BLAMER.

well hey we had guys that hardly ever sniffed the court transfer down to a bunch of schools in conferences nobody has ever heard of and that set us back tremendously as well!!!

compare us to other A-10 teams. we are bottom.
It appears from that info graphic that we are near the bottom of the entire NCAA . I don't know if anyone saw the program, a few weeks back but this is what our crack marketing team put in it.

Richmond is among the Top 5 teams in the country in losses by 7 points or less. It listed the other teams, as if this was some big competition that we were fighting it out to be number 1. Can't make this shit up if you tried.

do they put that in the game notes or something else?

in 15 losses at VCU we've lost 1 game by 7 points or less. 1. by exactly 7 points. Put that stat up against anyone. top 1. worst rivalry coach of all time.

Yeah, I believe so. A buddy showed it to me. We had a good laugh as our marketing team had to put something in the game notes and some idiot chose that stat. However, since we are indeed tracking it internally, I wonder if we can hang banner next year. 2024 Number 1 team in the country in losses by 7 points or less. Put it right next to Gilly's steal records.

Of course, Mooney is gonna have to step it up here, getting his ass handed to him by 41 at VCU, ain't helping us lock this down. I've got confidence in him though, if there is one thing he is really good at, it's losing tight games down the stretch. Kind of his specialty, if you will.

They're making it sound like we were right in so many games and could have a bunch more wins, when in reality we blew a bunch of those games ourselves.

Yeah, I guess that is angle. But that is a terrible angle. Only losing teams would advertise and promote close losses as some type of metric to be proud of. I wish I could remember the other teams on this list but assuredly they all suck too.

writing the Game Notes this season has to be a thankless job...I have no idea who writes them, but am sure the expectation is to make the program, team and players look as good as possible and take as positive an approach as possible to the upcoming game...

making a terrible statistic sound and look like a positive is nearing the bottom of the barrel...including this stat in the Game Notes started during that terrible stretch when we snatched losses from the jaws of victory at the end of several games in a row...

I'm too lazy to look back, but I believe there was also another terrible stat that was framed as a positive somewhere along the line...we can do better!

Mooney’s record?
there is an asterisk on Coach Mooney's number of UR wins that reveals he is the all time winningest UR coach...however, there is no asterisk on the number of losses to point out he is also has the most losses in UR history!

I think I recall Tarrant saying, when questioned about passing someone for wins, "it just means I've been here a long time."

DT was a great coach. Winner.
I have never seen a coach at Richmond, or other programs, that did more with less...believe one of Tarrant's strongest attributes was his ability to develop and motivate players to play at the fullest extent of their potential...sometimes it took a year, sometimes four years, but he had a knack for getting them there.

It translated into the period of Richmond basketball that for the first time ever showed fans what UR could be with the right pieces in place!

This fan always thought we had a chance to win when a Tarrant lead team took the court!

Good coaches win with their players, Great coaches win with the players they have.
