Chase Johnson - 2017 Offer

Am really hoping that our coaches, who can now totally focus on landing one BIG this fall, will find one who can help immediately, or at least one with strong potential.

If our guy is not great offensively, we can always use a rim-protector who can develop his offensive game over time... Let's get it done this fall though. The spring is a really lousy time to go fishing for recruits, and the odds of getting a good one go down significantly if we don't get it done soon.
But not for grad transfers...

2 stars / unrated per recruiting sites on verbal commits, interesting to see if that goes up since a high major picked him up.

That is probably why he pinned this tweet 2 months ago

Interesting list for someone the recruiting services didn't bother to visit.

Recruiting services don't know a thing. Literally. What they "know" comes from AAU (and sometimes HS) coaches and then indirectly from college coaches based on who they offer. That's why a 2 star guy becomes a 4 star guy once he signs with a MIchigan State. His AAU coach wasn't hyping him or his AAU coach/program wasn't as well known so the coach's hype was discounted, but once a Michigan State signs him, the service figures he must be great and moves him up.

AAU coaches promote their guys (and really they are trying to promote themselves in most cases) and the "services" are just the place of publication. The AAu coaches even rely a lot on the college coaches - - hyping their players in part based on what colleges really do seem interested etc. The services don't do much if any actual evaluation of players. AAU coaches and college coaches do all their work.

the ranking gurus don't just sit behind their computers. they actually do go to pretty much all of the big event and see a lot of the players. it's ok that they're not always right. and it's ok that they change rankings ... either because they think the players improved or because they think they realize they might have ranked a kid too low based on offers he's getting. it's not perfect but it's the best we can get.

s'man you're right, go to most major events and you will see representatives there filming and grading players. It's not totally blind as some think.

And just like that, verbal commits raises him from 2 to 3 stars and espn went from not even rating him to giving him 4 stars.

Marquis Godwin was rated a 4-star recruit by some sources until he committed to UR and he became a 3-star. Look at the player not his "star rating". OSC

Its true the services attend the big events, but they literally see maybe the Top 50-75 players (and a few more who happen to be on teams with the Top 50-75), but they see very few beyond that and focus very little on those other guys. A random "3 star" guy almost certainly has not been seen and evaluated (unless he plays on a team with a 5 star guy) directly by the services. Some actually have some trusted non-employee etc. coaches who they consult with to say "hey have you seen Joe Doaks out on the AAU trail and if so, what do you think?"

But bottom line, is that you really can't trust them at all, especially outside the Top 75 players.

I find it pretty funny that they change the rating after a commitment. I agree that it's only the top players that are truly rated probably top 100 or 150 anything beyond that is a crapshoot. Go by who is recruiting the kid much better measure.

no need to get all caught up in rankings and stars. your eyes will tell you pretty quickly if a kid's going to be good or not, no matter what the gurus say.

spiderman, you got that right and we have several recruits this year and last year who are going to be good. OSC
