Can We Stop with the Mid-Major Designation?

This has been regurgitated over and over on this board but I just can't understand how any self-respecting supporter of this program doesn't look at this and recognize that we need a change.
Despite the source...

Why is this thread making me hear “The very model of a modern mid-major program...” to music...

According to who? Not the selection committee, which is all that matters. We have been top 8 in bids received for over a decade. This year we were tied for 6th.
I thought we were talking about overall quality, which RPI measures. Number of bids only addresses the top teams (plus possible auto bid).

According to the vast majority of people on the board, the only measure of quality in college basketball is bids. The Kenpom and RPI banners are not real.

Just no way I consider the A10 conference to be a major player. There is only 6 of them for b-ball as I see it. Forget bids and simply going by what "rating" sites say for conference strength? Googled quickly 8 of them and came up for this season 2(9th), 3(10th), 3(11th) as A10's conference strength.

And if want to compare number of bids for the A10 to P5/6 conferences? I'll go back totaling last 5 years starting with 2014 when A10 got 6 bids.

28, 31, 24, 18, 36, 24, 34 Match them up with the conferences below?

ACC
A10
BE
BigTen
Big12
Pac12
SEC

This post has confused the hell out of me.

I’m not sure how impactful the etymology is behind UR and several hundred other schools being deemed mid majors. I expect it has some nominal impact in recruiting and perhaps some impact in tournament selection. The same could be said for student body size and climate.

Labeling is considerably unimportant in the scheme of things.

If MrT it left you confused, might be best to put me on ignore. I had to look up etymology myself. So anyways thought I just answered the thread title question considering the A10 a mid-major conference.

Gave a fact for my opinion by showing A10's final strength standing for 2017-18. The mid-major West Coast league has been ranked behind the A10 for years. Now to what I KNOW, both Gonzaga and UR play in mid-major conferences, difference is the Zags are competitive like a P5/6 team while the Spiders continue to perform like a mid-major squad.

And when I posted my question, don't remember which P5/6 conference had what number of bids for last 5 years but most here realized the A10 had the 18.

I dont think you can only look at the conference anymore and say "midmajor" about a team. 10 years ago the label was more geared toward a non P5 school but now obviously some programs are "major" despite being in a small conference. Likewise I think you can now say some P5 teams are falling out of the "major program" category.

I had a hard time following your post, not really questioning your logic. I think you were just channeling your stream of consciousness, I understand a bit better now.

I still think whether we self-identify or are perceived to be a mid-major program is 95% meaningless. In the 5% of conditions where it may matter, we aren’t a P5 program by definition, so I guess we fall somewhere else.

“Three-Quarter Major”???
