Burning redshirts

Isn’t there a minimum that a player must play before he has technically burns through his redshirt? Just wondering what the story with Randolph is. Mooney played him in three games for no real reason. Did that burn his redshirt? I hope not, because that would just be a waste of a year of eligibility.

Pretty sure Randolph is using a year of eligibility regardless of games he will play this year. I would like to see him start getting some meaningful minutes. He is enthusiastic and athletic. FCS football is different.

I answered this incorrectly elsewhere. For medical there’s a max number of games you can play in and retain the year. But you can’t claim the redshirt for nonmedical reasons if you play a minute.

Correct, in basketball as soon as you play a second, your eligibility is reduced by a year.

Anyone remember the dude who played one minute in a season for us about five years ago as a freshman, then transferred? Started with a
K, I think.

Kovien Dominaus...played one minute for us his freshman year. Left UR and eventually showed up at WV State a few years later. Not sure he ever used all of his eligibility anyway.

We need someone to hit some threes from the back court. Would like to see Dji get 20 minutes and try a few 3 pointers.

Not sure what the point was burning the RS year here? I'm sure Randolph was hoping to get more opportunity. As SpiderDad says, we don't really see what is going on in practice.

Ah yes, Kovien. Remember him well. Mooney got some inside tip from some Ohio State assistant that this guy was going to be a player despite not receiving offers from hardly any other D-1 schools.

Mooney did this because he got heat the year prior for not using up all of his roster spots, so he literally just offered a roster spot to " some random dude" who played high school basketball reasonably well. Entire escapade cost the school probably 50K, so Mooney could save face by not having a full scholarship allotment.

But yes, his defenders can now point to our "improved recruiting" because this is the type of bull crap Mooney was pulling on us back in the mid 2010's.

Also not privy to coach / player conversations. However, with so many returning players and the few mins Randolph got in OOC games, unless things change soon, it looks like he will have burnt a year for not much.

Possible Randolph just is intent on being done with college in four years, who knows. I'm sure he was aware that he wouldn't be playing much at all this year.

I’ve heard Randolph has looked great in practice and any other year he’d see PT. Well now it seems it’s any other year…

Have a feeling we might see some Randolph tonight

This would also align with what SpiderDad75 has been saying about practice not mattering to a player's PT.

Of course we look good in practice. We hear that regularly from Mooney et al. Opposing teams also look good against us so that makes sense.

In our practice scrimmages, do they just quit playing when someone on either team misses a shot? I assume that no one ever rebounds the ball.

I must have missed that. what did Dad say?

Check out FreeDji thread..."I can say I don’t think practice really matters imo & thats all I’ll say. The rotation was set a while ago and I personally believe it’s loyalty at this point"

In practice, does the defense synchronize with the offense during the Harlem Globe Trotter weave? Might be cool looking.

I think Burton proves that it's not a systemic thing. if we land athletes with the size, strength and bounce like Tyler, they'll rebound. we don't land those guys often.

You may just want to join our coaching staff sman. Yes, strength, athleticism and instinct have allowed Tyler to be an excellent rebounder - but it can be improved through emphasis, technique, and enforcement through coaching. I mean I saw Zay get a long loose rebound by just wanting it and hustling. Stockholm Syndrome

they don't want to come here and have their mojo siphoned out by Count Mooney
that's the myth I'm talking about. it's not that we can't rebound because Mooney is the coach. it's that Mooney doesn't land guys like Burton who rebound.

we can hope Walz and Noyes are those kind of guys, but who knows? nobody else in the 3 classes since Burton have a shot to be plus rebounders.

It’s 100% systemic for sure. Burton is that rare one with higher aspirations that is forced to say “F U Jobu, I do it myself” to Mooney.

glad someone sees through the smoke and mirrors of the Mooneyphiles.

Why else would a 6'10 guy that has started 131 games and counting and played nearly 4000 minutes only average 6 rebounds a game for his career?

right. the coach is saying "don't rebound". but Burton refuses. that makes more sense. smh

Then please 'splain to me Lucy, the mass exodus back up the court every time the ball doesn't go through the hoop. Or the no "boxing out" that seems foreign to all of Mooney's players through the years....

it's more related to the system and expectations in place by the head coach. You obviously think the coach is doing a great job with everything so I hope for your sake that he continues to run the program into the ground for another 17 years. Seems like you would enjoy that too, no?

Well that is exactly our approach to offensive rebounds. It is really tough to get those when you are being told to run down to the other side of the court as soon as a shot goes up. I love when we have a long rebound off of a missed shot and if a guy just would have stayed put where he was he could have easily grabbed it, yet we are in full retreat mode by that point to prevent fast breaks.

Right, that makes much more sense, than Tyler Burton is the only guy in the past decade Mooney has recruited who has the athletic ability to rebound a basketball. And, if that were the case, what in the hell is up with Mooney's recruiting?

not sure where you get that. no.
I hope you're not someone who believes that Tyler, who is clearly a great rebounder, must be defying his coach by rebounding. That sounds foolish to me.

ok, you focus on the one guy that has actually rebounded consistently for us in the past 17 years so that means everything is fine. No changes needed. Stay the course. The future is bright.

If we do that on DEFENSE, no wonder the defense is bad… ;)

where did I say everything is fine?
I said he's not landing enough guys like Burton. and I want him to. either he's not focused on attracting guys like him, or he just hasn't landed them. and playing without guys like him hasn't worked. heck, it's not even working well enough with one of him.
I don't know why you're spinning everything I say.
