I really hope Zay starts because I do think he sets a needed tone. However, based on CM’s answers to questions during the postgame makes me think he is looking at who to start at the 2 a game by game decision.

I think it was really easy for the defense to look better after the Utah St game because the defense in the USU game was horrendous, so add that to the list.
I wouldn't read too much into the post game quotes. Mooney has never been one to come close to criticizing a player, and I like that in a coach. So, when he changes a starting lineup, he is going to be very careful with his wording. I would be very surprised if Wilson does not start next game.

Zay played great in his start. I'm fine starting him. but I think a big part of our defense looking better in game 3 was due to our much improved offense. fewer defensive rebounds for the other team leads to fewer transition baskets. and fewer live ball turnovers has the same effect.
True, but we mentioned the importance of setting the tone early defensively, and they had three missed shots and a turnover before we even scored. It was 7-2 at the 15:00 minute mark. We were 3-6 from the field and they were 1-8 with 3 turnovers. THAT is setting the tone defensively from the opening tip. Then, Nick came in and knocked down back to back 3s and just like that we were up 13-2.

Lotta truth to this. Good defense often turns to good offense, and certainly good offense enables better defense.

We are in a rare position where we actually have some notable depth to try to find someone who can bring both on any given night.
I think our defense looked better because our defense was better. Better personnel on defense leads to better defense. We shot lights out in the first half against Utah State, but they stayed right with us, because our defense was horrible.

I just don't think 5 less minutes of Sherod and whether he started or not accounts for the drastic difference in game results that we saw. end of the day, Utah St is probably a little better than Ga St. we held Ga St to 7 less points. we scored 20 more. guys that missed shots in game 2 made them in game 3.

while I hope we found the magic answer by starting Zay, I'm doubtful that's all it takes. we're going to have games when we shoot great and everything looks rosey. and we'll have some games where we don't. hopefully not many.

Yeah, probably an oversimplification but still a good data point about the personnel change. As you state, some games we are going to shoot great while other we might not, kind of the nature of our offense, particularly one that relies a lot on the 3 ball. But having a good tough defense allows us to stay in every game though.

Also, Georgia State got a lot of garbage time points against our walk-ons in the last few minutes. Their final score was not indicative of how much our defense controlled that game.

I know this is a football saying but defense wins championships. If you play good D, you more than likely are controlling many facets of the game, even games when your shots are not falling.

I don’t think anyone is saying that one substitution is the key to everything. Basketball is a team game after all. However, attitude is important and one person can definitely affect that part of the game.

I heard numerous talking heads say that Richmond was going to miss Blake Francis because of his junkyard dog style defense. In this aspect, I think Zay is more than an adequate replacement. I.cannot say that if I put Nick in that position.

As far as replacing Blake on offense, I don’t think there is any sort of one to one correlation and I am happy about that fact.

random thought, is this years SG/ 2 guard position the most competitive position in the Mooney era? It certainly has the most guys vying for time at that spot. I think it’s a great problem to have and will get even more interesting when Goose comes back.

For sure - any Gus updates other than early December?
