just looked at Sal's stats. expected to see a more drastic improvement! he looks better though.Sal appears to be on the Greg Robbins schedule.
Thanks URMite for looking this up. I think the numbers speak for themselves. For Seasons ending in/Non-Starter Spider minutes per game (per Kenpom)
I believe 60 minutes is about average.
I will agree with Brothers - he didn't play much early on, but progressed into a leader on the team and all A10 player. But no so much Robbins who was a good role player his senior year, but nothing more and that team was not very good. Same with Williams, he was a good player, but nothing great in my opinion, and didn't he end up leaving the team? But, what about the numerous freshman who played a lot of minutes right away, played well right away, and had great careers? They did not need a warm up freshman season. But, because they played too much their freshman season, I guess they don't count? It seems like you are looking for someone who didn't play much at all his freshman year, and then became a leading player to counter your argument? Am I missing something? Is that really popular at other programs? What does that really prove and why is that any better than someone playing a lot right away and becoming a leading player?
But, that being said, we still had some freshman play less minutes than Harper did his freshman season, and still go on to good careers.
Robbins played 6 minutes a game, Brothers 4, and Williams 4, but I still don't know what this really proves. They were good players, but had players in front of them, just like Wilson and Bailey this year. There is nothing unique about Mooney and our program when it comes to freshman. Like all programs, some freshman don't play much, some play a little, and some play a lot. Playing time depends on not only how good you are, but who is in front of you. Our freshman who played a lot of minutes their freshman year were good, and didn't have as many people in front of them.
I think you’ve got a worthy starting SF in Burton and probably a serviceable 2G in Gus. Everything else is a crapshoot. Maybe Sal develops enough to slot at one of the forward spots, I don’t see MattG starting and am uncertain if Crabtree will be consistently healthy.I will agree with Brothers - he didn't play much early on, but progressed into a leader on the team and all A10 player. My point is that we have had many good frosh play right away and they seem to progress well under Mooney. But guys that do not - do not really materialize into taking the next step and being the next man up. This just leaves me with little faith that we won't be entering another deep rebuild process after this year because we have no young guys getting minutes, and our best bench player is Goose who is more of defensive/hustle type player.
I don't expect at this time to be a team that reloads year after year, but I don't think we should also be entering another 3-4 year drought (if not longer) and while no one can predict the future - it certainly looks like we are heading down that path.
