Auburn Tonight

Well we just lost at the hands of the refs. We’ve been doing nothing but losing for 7 straight seasons and this is in my eyes the most embarrassing one of all. To get bent over by refs on national TV should absolutely incense Queally and the entire athletic department
The refs weren’t great, but it wasn’t just the refs tonight. We missed a lot of open looks, gave up a lot of offensive rebounds.

The three combined were the reason in my mind, not one of them on their own.

So how many fewer fouls called = win? Really curious on this one.

That's crazy talk.

There should be a self imposed 24 hour rule after losses like this. 24 hours later you should think clearer about this game.

Good grief, the team is off to a great start to the season and this board has imploded. You’d think we were 0-6 by the way folks are reacting and attacking each other. I’m not the biggest Mooney fan but the team is playing hard and looks a ton better than expected. One tough half against a very good, physical Auburn team doesn’t change that.

Jesus you really don’t know when to quit. I’m embarrassed to be a fan of the same team as you and I truly hope you are not an alum.
Oh you expect all fans to wear rose colored glasses all of the time and blame a dominated lose on the refs and not any weakness on our players part. Do you think CM is also saying the same to the players right now? "We did everything wonderful tonight guys. Don't change a thing. The refs cost us the game." Hahaha

Honestly it looked like an equal match up. Thing is, we couldn’t buy a 3. That happens sometimes. Regardless, Spiders look 1,000 percent better than the last 3 years combined.
I will agree with the last two points you make in this post.

UR got beat by better talent and better coaching. Hobbit guards will struggle against taller stronger opponent. Sherod too slow to be factor against top SEC talent. Best team won.

Looks like Auburn is going to be better than I thought and Wiscy not as good as I thought. Other than a poor night from 3 land good aspects from Spiders play.

No A10 opponent will come close to the size and athleticism they saw tonight. After watching these last 2 games still feel doubtful an at-large bid can be had but optimistic a 4th seed is quite realistic. 3 games in 3 days is the way!

I can tell you didn’t attend Richmond just from this. Thank god! I won’t waste anymore time on a helpless troll.
You just can't accept reality my friend and when someone questions your delusions, you crawl under a rock. I've been on this board for 5 years longer than you. And its far easier being a UR student/alum than it is to be the parent of UR students, I can guarantee you that. When you send your kids through colleges that cost 60K, give me a call.

Yes the refs were bad. But I think the reason they were bad was because Auburn was more physical and we were content in jacking 3 after 3 even when we kept missing. The refs are always going to lean to the aggressor. In this case ty leaned too much - but it wasn’t a 20 point difference.
This game was typical of past 2 years. We had a scoring drought to start 2nd half and couldn’t recover. We got pounded on the boards by giving up 18 offensive rebounds. And we shot poorly but I think some of that has to do with the pressure and length of Auburn against our small guards in Gilyard and Francis.
Biggest surprise was no Wojcik till garbage time. With us struggling to hit shots why not give him a few minutes early and see if he could catch fire? Maybe hit a 3 or something to give a spark? Not saying he should have played 20 minutes but give him a shot in first half especially with Francis struggling.

Auburn had a cakewalk v. New Mexico last night. No sweat. No effort.UR had a battle with Wisconsin throughout and then had a 24 hour celebration with the biggest win a while. We kept it close for 20 mins but ran out of gas.Auburn had 22 more charity
attempts than UR and made 15 more than UR.We were in foul trouble at halftime. We didn’t come out of the gate at the 21 min mark.Pearl schemed Francis exceptionally well.

Auburn is a good team, no doubt. To beat a team like Auburn, we have to make shots. We didn’t tonight. I am still encouraged that our defense is improving. We need to come home and take care of an average (at best) BC team. Not a bad trip to Barclays at 1-1. I hope GG is ok.

my last thoughts on this game and this thread...
Bottom line is that we played a decent game and stayed with this team for a half and then were thoroughly dominated in almost every aspect of the game thereafter. For some on here (Ply and Dr.) to say that we would have won the game if it weren't for the refs is pure nonsense and I called them out on it, which they got very very defensive about. The team does look promising compared to years passed but some of the same weakness, mainly defensive rebounding and interior D, seem to be present which this game showed. Lets hope we beat BC.

He did play in the first half. Just not athletic enough.

Trap, you nailed it. I saw some bad calls, but refs tend to favor the aggressor and more athletic team. Good effort in the first half and couldn't stay with them physically in the 2nd.
Thus was a classic example of having two very good 5'7 and 5'11 guards, but top teams have the same at 6'2 and 6'3. Sherod is a very crafty scorer but hard to compete vs SEC athletes. Good effort but just overwhelmed.

The refs were not good last night, and I think that’s being kind.

BUT they didn’t cost us the game. We gave up too many O rebounds and didn’t hit shots, especially from 3.

Also, I think we let the refs get to us. We were too busy looking for the foul on offense instead of just fighting through it.

Overall though, I’m proud of the team and the fight they showed in Brooklyn. There’s no shame in losing to a team like Auburn, especially when we proved to ourselves we can hang with them. Hopefully we learn from what went wrong and come back stronger!

Roll Spide!

Grant has got to find a way to control his emotions with the officials. It seems like he is complaining for a call every 2nd or 3rd time down the floor. It isn't doing anything to get him the calls he wants and is probably starting to work again him/us. At minimum, it's unseemly to watch.

We were 2-18 from 3 pt land, hit 7-18 (all else the same) and we win. Auburn put together the formula to take us down It will be interesting to see how we respond when we see other teams try a similar game plan, most teams will not have the depth of personnel to make it work. They were big and strong and beat us up down low, they were fast and long allowing them to guard us well on the outside. Hard to beat, but shoot better and we pull them out more opening up the middle. A loss, but hopefully a learning experience, how do we get clean looks from the outside when we face a similar game plan. Do your job coaches.

We should pressure teams more to try and take advantage of our quick guards, and longer defenders like AG and SK (I thought Sal was really active again against AU). I know Auburn likes to run, but so do we! We play better fast.

Yes - we shot poorly, but we have to look at why we shot poorly.

I think you have to give credit to Auburn - they made some adjustments at halftime, were physical and they used their length and athleticism on defense to make the shots difficult or at least not wide open.

You also have to factor in that our main shooters - Gilyard, Sherod, and Francis played heavy minutes the night before. So I am sure in the 2nd half - their legs started to wear down.

And of course - some was just an off night. But to just sit back and say - we make shots, we win. You could say that after every loss, especially close losses. But when its a 20 point game like this one - you have to look at the reasons we missed and I think it had more to do with Auburn's defense and our fatigue more than just an off night.

Also - I think you saw in this game that we are once again, not as deep as we thought off the bench. Grace and Wojcik are non-existent. So now you are down to Sal, Burton, and Gustav. Gustav is the 6th man and it looks like with Burton and Sal - it will all depend on what foul trouble Grant gets into and how Cayo is playing to determine their playing time. We are basically down to 7 man rotation again unless Cayo plays bad AND Grant gets foul trouble - then you will see both Burton and Sal play double digit minutes.

Rebounding - We were getting killed on the offensive glass. I thought Grant and Cayo battled pretty well in there, but it seemed like 4 vs 2, we really need more guys on the glass - it seemed like our guards were not trying to help - or maybe I couldn't see them.
I agree that we have more depth than last year, but 3 of our bench guys are just not athletic enough to make plays against that type of line up.

Auburn was simply a case of the bigger, stronger, faster team won a game that they were expected to win. Spider play wasn't as good, but Auburn's play was highly non-inspirational as well. Auburn did not play a great game. At this point in the year, they look overrated. Will they get better and actually be the 18th best team in country, time will tell. Last night they looked more like top 50.

National write up on the game:

What worries me about this is that in the second half we literally told them they were killing us... This is an issue for both the mentality and also giving the other team extra motivation.

Again, hopefully we can learn from this game and build from it. Definitely a lot of positives to take away but also plenty of things to improve on.

Sonny Smith told once told me- You are never as good as you think and you are never as bad as you think.

That fits the Barclay's games well. But as an outside, I think you guys have really improved over the past year.

The A-10 is going to be a war. Dayton, VCU, Davidson, and yes, UR will make some noise. Top to bottom it is the best we have seen. Dayton torn VaTech a new one yesterday. And that was one day after Tech had beat Michigan State. The conference is a mirror image of what it was last year. It is going to be a fun season.

I bought my UR season tickets again this year. They are selling well, but they did last year to. As a season ticket holder, I also was able to pick-up 10 extras to the VCU game. The better you are the better deal this is for me.

Enjoyed the year so far. Man, that Samir really is pretty good. He left VCU because he was worried about playing time. He was right, but I think he would have fit in pretty good had he stayed. How many did he drop on Richmond?

See you soon. If my UR tickets don't sell I'll be there, sitting right behind the visitor's bench. It is OK to cheer for A-10 team out of conference, but be warned, once conference play starts, the games will be on!
