Read in today's RTD that Alex Petrie averaged 15ppg and was Patriot League Rookie of the year. 6'3" guard that went to high school a mile from the Robins Center. What was the problem here again?

I understand Alex wanted to come to UR, but how many approximate 6'3" players do we need? I suspect if he wanted to walk-on he would have welcomed with open arms.

The knock was he wasn't good enough. Wasn't Lafayette his only offer?

Looking at his stats this year, he was a solid three point shooter at 40% and excellent FT shooter at 90%, but nothing else jumps out at me. Shot 43% from the field overall, 23 assists to 58 turnovers, etc.

SF, believe you nailed it. Heard he is a great kid.

Didn't he also announce he was going to reclass to 2018 to try to get more exposure, but then went ahead and accepted Lafayette's offer for 2017? Think there was some CAA-level interest, but don't remember how things panned out in terms of offers for which year.

I have no idea what our staff thought of him. There is the point brought up by urfan1 that we have a glut of guard talent, so even if we though highly of him we may have passed due to trying to get more forward talent. The only guard we brought in for his class was Gilyard, and the other 4 recruits were all 6'5+.

Isn't he the guy that the UR staff said was not athletic enough? Basketball savvy can often times make up for a little less athleticism.

Let's be honest.

If we offered him, with just Lafayette as his only other offer, there would have been plenty of people posting about how Mooney was an idiot.

At this point, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't.

I don't remember a single person here posting support for going after Alex. Literally EVERY COACH IN AMERICA except for Layfayette dropped the ball on offering.

Mo, it is clear that your only objective is to make our coaches look bad. Bottom line, Alex was not skilled enough to play in our league. Leave it at that. Nice kid.

My objective is to maintain some level of interest in our program, as hard as that has become.

Regarding the skillfulness of Petrie, you have railed on about how terrible the A10 is for years. This kid must really suck then, huh?

Yep.

Let's be honest. I was taking a beating for wanting this kid. I liked what I saw.
I will admit when he skipped prep school to jump on the Lafayette offer I cooled on him. It's and inexact science but I would have liked to see us take a chance on him compared to some of the others.

If we offered Petrie and locked up another SG who didn’t pan out for four years when we desperately need front court help, the pitchforks would have been out.

At least with a grad transfer you’ve only whiffed for one year.

Overall our talent evaluation needs to get better, that way there’d be way less second-guessing why we didn’t pursue the guy with only one Patriot League offer.

I remember seeing Petrie play, side-by-side with our Nick (for St. Chris), and he was clearly not as good as Nick, by a significant margin. However, he did have some very nice skills, that did not include a high level of athleticism. I was hoping we would find a spot for him, and think he would have been a far better choice than our two latest grad transfers, but maybe the coaches learned a small lesson from this one. He was a winner, and probably a solid student, and sometimes that can trump whatever we have seen (or failed to see) in grad transfers. I know we scouted him heavily, simply because we were watching Nick carefully, and Petrie was hard to miss as the 2nd best guy on that St. Chris team. My guess is that if we had to do it over again, we would offer.

As someone above noted, we will know more once we see what we got in the three redshirts who sat out this season and who were considered "stronger recruits." If all three step in next season and play well, then Petrie is water under the bridge. If not, then he will count as an unfortunate recruiting miss, because he would have loved to play at UR. At least this was a case where we said "no," not the recruit.

he went to the right level in the PL, where he can play and succeed. nothing wrong with that.

Saw Petrie in high school because he was Sherod's teammate. I saw his level of play more a fit for a CAA/Patriot league level squad. Our coaches, who obviously saw him extensively because he played with Sherod, obviously thought the same of him.

Both of us were wrong. Good thing my day job is not in college recruiting.

97, it appears that you were right; his level of play seems to be a good fit for the Patriot League.

I'd say anyone who was the freshman of the year in an entire league certainly could play productive minutes for us. Maybe he's improved through good coaching at Lafayette. Maybe we didn't want two guys from the same school. Who knows. It does seem as if he would have been a better option than JMA.

Would he? We didn't need another guard, unless you think he would have beat out Gilyard. At a minimum, JMA provided a big body in practice for us.

Petrie had an ideal situation...joined a bad team that needed a guard after Lindner graduated last year. Perfect opportunity to step into a role where he could be a leading guy for them. Somebody's gotta score the points.

ROY in the PL playing 25 mpg is awesome. but I seriously doubt he'd have played here with Khwan at the 2 and Julius behind him. he'd have been on the bench or red shirted and everyone would complain that Mooney recruited a bench player who only had a Lafayette offer.

No doubt. He shot 48% from three in conference play, which is pretty incredible. But with the guys we had in place, he wouldn't have been able to see the floor enough here as a frosh to develop that quickly. He was 31% from three during OOC play. And with an A/TO ratio of 0.4, Mooney would have yanked him so fast..
