AD Search

The realistic options are:

*Get an experienced AD from a smaller conference

*Get an assistant AD from a larger conference

*Get someone with little or no AD experience

That's it. We're not going to hire a sitting AD from a larger conference, so if you don't like the idea of someone from the Patriot League, I presume you would rather have someone who hasn't been an AD before?

Yep I was hoping for someone with more recent power conference basketball connections to maybe help schedule higher rated teams OOC, understanding that would be a current assistant. oh well. Hardt does appear to have a sold background and the ability to increase spider club participation.

The M.State job was 17 years ago.

Since Bucknell seems to always beat us in basketball, bring him on.

He knows UR, and UR knows him...his daughter graduated from UR a couple years ago.

After reading his history more, I like this hire too. One article I found talked about Hardt saying "Yet, he has also been a major fundraiser and facilities upgrader at Bucknell which is really what the game of the AD is about".

Yes that is basically half the game of what AD is about (I'd say the other half is scheduling games, working out TV deals, trying to increase national brand/exposure). And it seems that Hardt did a good job of doing the other half at Bucknell too, given the limitations the school has. If he comes to Richmond, with greater ability to acquire resources and us having a stronger athletic standing, I'm excited to see what he can do.

Guys, Bucknell sponsors 27 sports (about 10 more than UR) and the Bison Club raises about 40 percent more money than the Spider Club does. Bucknell is not some podunk athletic department. This guy has a proven track record. He was considered a candidate for Syracuse and some much bigger jobs than Richmond over the last few years.

On the surface , this looks like a home run to me.

Guys, I think he would be a good hire, not sure he's even been offered, if not, I hope this does not cause him to withdraw his name.

UVA found their AD this week.Littlepage resigned September 4th.

Gill resigned May 10.

For a small school we appear to have a built-in bureaucracy. Our deliberateness and slowness may be symptomatic of other underlying issues which are readily recognized by an underwhelming AD applicant pool.

I assume some of the delay was adjusting the organization, getting Hale in position etc.

While our search does seem unnecessarily tedious, if we went fast and made the same hire as UVA half the board would be in an uproar over not doing our due diligence and making a PC hire.

Let’s compare UVA new AD qualifications and our new AD,when that happens.Make sure we’re wearing specially constructed glasses that removes an individual’s skin tone when doing the comparison.

I appreciate your attempt at rationalizing our lethargy and sloppiness.

After the release of that report, the chair of the 10-person search committee, Dave Hale, responded to a request by The Times-Dispatch for comment.

Via email, Hale wrote: “The university is not in a position to make a job offer to anyone at this time as the hiring committee has not yet met with any potential candidates.”

“As we’ve said since the beginning of our hiring process, the engagement of the campus community in this important decision is of paramount importance to us, and we will not move forward until the committee has had the chance to vet our candidates,” Hale wrote.

I agree it's somewhat excusing the delay but If I were Hale (or anyone taking the position) I'd demand to be involved in the AD hiring. Now why it took so long to offer Hale the job, I have no idea

In the mean time we are in competent and capable hands with David Walsh. Take your time and get the best AD we can get.

Since the W &M Indians are playing the Stanford Indians, our Spiders should go play the Trojans of USC! Perhaps our new AD could arrange this game!

Standford has not acknowledged their team mascot as an Indian since 1972. W&M is playing this game simply for money and prestige. They have no notion of winning. That is how they think. Many of their grads are proud of it.
I think we should have the General Spideys playing the Ephelia the Purple Cow of Williams College. Much more appropriate. Probably more winnable, but I am not so sure after today's performance.

Stanford was one of the first schools to succumb to the cancer of Political Correctness.

being too far away now, can someone explain and define what the hale, hale's job is for me. if it is another buffer between the athletic dept and the president, why or why not? just curious since his name is on numerous posts on this thread. personally, if an AD, don't want to report to someone who reports to the head person, want to report to the head person.

HE is the EVP/COO of the school. It appears that all non-academic operations of the school, (ie housing, athletics) report to him.

UR as it is currently built is not able to move quickly. It would not surprise me to see them struggle to hire someone this time around. There is no institutional agility.

Has to be an improvement over Gill. Let's see what he has to offer. Sure hope they keep David Walsh. He loves this school and is a huge asset to any AD.

not sure why everyone is in such a hurry. we have very competent people who can do the job and hiring a head person should be a very important process, certainly more important than just getting someone in the position quickly. really that goes for most hires, quality not speed.

The bigger deal was potential AD job applicants..."Why would I want to work there if they're not putting a priority on the position?"

I feel like Gill was let go, the school outlined a time line and a process that was going to be used to hire the best person, and the committee did exactly what they said they were going to do. I don't see any problem with what happened or the time it took since we were told upfront how it was going to be handled. Seems like a great hire and I certainly hope it is.
