A Coaching Resume

Philly, you make some great points. And the fact that Mooney is making 1.3 per year to not achieve makes it more baffling. Should be an interesting year. Hope Mooney can turn a leaf and be open to ideas. Think Hovde can be a positive force if he doesn't just fall in line with Mooney's philosophies.

To successfully manage COVID last year, you had to either take it seriously or be lucky. We did neither.
100% correct. The ironic thing is I think the University actually did an above average to excellent job handling the situation.

However as 97 points out

You can blame it on ……poor planning and execution by Mooney and company.

The SLU situation CANNOT be excused. It was outright embarrassing and of course the ramifications spilled into the A10 tournament hosting situation.

Can you name one team that was impacted more by covid pauses than us (other than VCU)?
Not more, but just as much. Villanova. Shutdown Dec 27 including head coach Jay Wright who tested positive. Came back for one day of practice Jan 3 and then got shutdown again. Returned to practice Jan 15. Missed 2 games during this period. Also missed 3 games once its season resumed due to issues in opponents programs. They also lost their first game in Big East tournament.

Some very nice arguments made throughout this thread. Yes, it is all rehash, but it is also all true. If we want to know where Mooney stacks up as a coach, all of these eloquent articulations (symptoms) can be put on the back burner.

The "proof in the pudding" comes from watching him actually manage (mismanage) a game from the sideline. Those who see the game from a bit broader knowledge and experience perspective know that Mooney is very mediocre when it comes to in-game performance. He has proven this time-and-time again throughout his tenure in Richmond.

Yes, I know that those who don't see the game the same way will be squealing about the inaccuracy of this post. But, in a sport where the margin is small, average sideline performance = average wins/losses. The 16-year body of work (as pointed out by KESpider in an earlier post), illuminates this point.

Mooney is perfectly average (except when it comes to playing our biggest rival) and that seems to be good enough for the powers that be at UR.

Exactly. We all were around last year with the SLU situation and how we looked like the biggest god damn fools in the room when SLU refused to play us because they saw first hand our shit protocols, our AD and coach called them out and shamed SLU, and then boom 2 days later our whole team got Covid and was shut down for 2 weeks.

And the fact that we had 3 shutdown in and of itself is kind of proof that we are either were the unluckiest SOB's on the planet or maybe we didn't take things as seriously as we needed to.

Alas, last year was a big giant train wreck of a season, we were probably one of the most underperforming teams in the country.

It’s easier to be an armchair quarterback after the fact. There were so many others who didn’t take the virus seriously. Just so you know, I was masked and got the shots (all three) when I qualified.

I wasn’t reading the board then but do we have any other info / speculation as to what caused the SLU game to be postponed? Other than the assumption that we had bad protocols.

Not entirely sure. but this thread might shed light on the thoughts at the time and the week after.

At this point, this discussion is akin to us explaining why the sun rises every 24 hours and the powers that be in the Robins Center saying "We aren't really convinced yet -- give us a few more years to investigate."

we're in a really good place.

This is delusional. We are 3-3 with zero quality wins. We have totally melted down the stretch in 3 games with 5th and 6th year seniors on the court. We are not in a good place. In fact, we are in a pretty desperate place if we want to make the NCAA tournament and not yet another year of mediocrity.

well in fairness ... I said we're in a good place back in September.

That’s ok September might be our peak. Maybe June. It’s a toss up.

combine last season w this season & I don’t think u could find a worse coaching resume.

what’s his vcu record again? Anyone? Bc just wait to we get to those games. Mortal lock we drop at least 1. I realize vcu has some losses but they still have the best win, play w grit, r young & will only get better & healthier.

I’m not going to pile on sman, that was a couple months ago. I do think it’s probably emblematic of a UR mindset which is many people tend to believe in the promise of what’s to come more than the results we actually have.

We are multiple classes and multiple recruiting cycles in. The pattern is familiar.

3 more CBI tournies including the UVA game (known as the worst officiated game in basketball history.....I was there)
So many things wrong with this. How do you use CBI appearances as a defense? What other self respecting school would? Does any school fly a CBI banner in their arena? The worst officiated game in basketball history? Quite a statement. You attended a CBI game? Why? Hope it was free.

I was at that CBI game too, and he's not wrong about the officiating. But yes, let's not count CBI appearances as anything meaningful.

That CBI game was the first postseason step toward our NCAA bids. Too bad we haven't been able to replicate that multi-year progression since.

Is it a good thing when a UVA loss almost 14 years ago in the CBI is still on your resume after 17 years at the same school?

VCU did only because they won the thing the year before their Final Four run. I don't know if it's still up in their arena but it was during the season OF their Final 4 run.

Believe he’s 7-20 now. Three of those in the A10 tournament. But we competed in at least another 7 of the losses, so it’s ok.
