50 A-10 Players

I guess we have a skewed perception of Mitchell based on the fact we ran them out of the gym in our only meeting, because while I'll readily agree he's a solid player, he certainly didn't seem like a POY to me. He scored a grand total of four points in the first half against us, and the game was all but decided at that point.

I agree not a POY.

But his last 2 home games, he averaged 27 points, 14 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 assists, and 1 steal as a freshman against VCU/URI.
So there is potential.

Sure...we just didn't get to see that player.

He also played on a sub-.500 team and once Weeks went out for the season, they didn't have a whole lot of offensive options.

Solid player, but I think POY is overselling him.

Mitchell is a nice player but the way they force fed him, it’s no surprise he scored a lot. Even inour game I think he ended up with like 18, just about all in garbage time when we were up 30. It’s insulting to about five other guys in this league for anyone to pick him as POY.

Yeah, he got 4 in the first half, at which point we were up 23. He scored his other 14 between about the 18-minute mark and the 8:30 mark of the second half when they took him out for good. During his spurt they never got closer than 19 and we even pushed it to 30 just before he came out with us up 28. They were losing ground even when he was scoring, so they threw in the towel.

You could make the case for the last 8 years before this one that any of our good players we just force fed as well. Even TJ. Is it valid? No. But judging a player off one game is just irresponsible

That site can set whatever parameters it wants in picking its POY. I don't think any of us are judging Mitchell by just that one game but rather using it as an example to show how he scored a lot of points. UMass sucked and they only got him by hiring his high school coach and signing like 5 of his HS teammates, so in order to keep him happy, they just made him the focal point of every single possession because what else did they have to lose?

He's a very good player, but he's not yet the POY as a sophomore, especially not when you have guys like Gilyard and Crutcher and others who have been great for three years AND play for winning teams. My parameters for a POY candidate would be someone who is great on both sides of the ball and whose team is one of the best in the league. Maybe Mitchell becomes that this year, but based on last year IMO, he wasn't.

I wouldn't say that about T.J...he had a decent supporting cast and two out of his three seasons we were a top-tier A-10 team. I could see that about a few of our other guys over the years though.

Not saying Mitchell won't be POY at some point in his career or even next year, just that the player we saw didn't look to be at that level (yes, I know it was just one game, which is why I said in my OP that our view may be skewed a bit). And there are certainly valid questions about a good player on a bad team and whether they are filling the stat sheet because they're really that good or because they're the only option.

Lots of hype around Mitchell before he even suited up and it remains. He is a good player, but I don't see UMass being in the mix to win the A-10. So, to me, Gilyard, Crutcher, and either Goodwin or French from SLU should be your leading candidates preseason for POY.

Putting Mitchell number 1 to me is for the ranking to generate discussion and clicks, nothing more.

One thing I note on these lists, Fatts Russell consistently overrated. Maybe I have just seem some bad games, but he seems like a shoot first point guard, that is not very efficient and packs it in when things are not going his way. I would rank Blake "Franchise" above him any day.
Completely agree, overrated. He will have his good games, but as we showed, he can be taken out of the game almost completely.

I believe Crutcher should be POY favorite. Good O, good D, clutch as hell - consistent and brings it every night.

Gilyard would be number 2 in my book. Better steals guy, but not quite the consistent offensive threat as Crutcher. But I could see Gilly turning it up a notch and winning POY. Based on last years production and leadership, it would be Crutcher.

Cannot believe Tyler Burton is not listed with A10 Breakout Players Burton could
and should be a beast this year.

Crutcher would be my number 1 as well. Love that guys game. He is tough, well rounded, and takes and makes big time shots. Obviously, I hope Gilly wins it.

Hell, I just hope we have a season to determine it at this point.

I did post this article because we had all 5 guys on it.

I did find Mitchell as POY as humorous. And as a cop out not to have to pick between Crutcher & Gilyard...
