2025 MLAX Schedule

Notre Dame blasts 4-seed Ohio State, 15–6, and Harvard is taking it to 6-seed Syracuse, 9–4 late in the third. This thing is feeling pretty wide open.

45 minutes until Cornell/Albany.

Notre Dame was better than what was essentially the 13 seed. Paired with Ohio State first round because NCAA committee factors in convenience of travel, which should not be a thing for division 1 national tournaments.

Hot damn…Syracuse came back to win 13–12 in OT. They were down 8–2 at the half. ‘Cuse actually was in position to win it in regulation after the huge comeback, but Harvard got a goal with 6 seconds left to force OT.

The only thing that will due Richmond in this Saturday will be the nerves we saw in the first quarter of the UNC game. Absolutely cannot have mental mistakes against a team like Cornell. Also we seem to be at a disadvantage on the face off whenever we play a good team. Jared was able to settle down a bit at UNC but he got dog walked for most of the game. I trust Chemotti to have the boys ready for this challenge. Richmond 14 Cornell 12.

I see a lot of similarities between this lacrosse win and the Women's hoops team, who also won their first game in the NCAA tourney this year and then had to play the overall 1 seed - UCLA, on their home court. Winning the first round game is a huge step for lacrosse program, and while playing the 1 seed is not ideal, its a good showcase.

While a win would be even bigger, in reality - all this team needs to do is stay close to Cornell. Can't show up to Cornell and get blown out by 8-10 goals. Then it just becomes - this was a nice story, and UR lacrosse, on a national scene will be forgotten for the most part. BUT - if the team can keep it close, stay within 3-4 goals of Cornell - give them a scare, then the message is out there - UR lacrosse is for real and on the rise.

Similar to the women's hoops team - they stayed with UCLA until halftime, and then really only had 1 bad quarter. So they hung with the #1 team in the country for 3 quarters and the message was sent - UR women's hoops is on the rise. And they have already seen some of the positives of that - like already being talked about as top 25 team for next year, and our best player - Doogan, being a possible WNBA draft pick.

Same can happen with UR lacrosse - keep this game close, and the story and buzz will continue during the off-season and carry into next year.

No time for morale victories. Richmond is an equally impressive team to Cornell. They can and will win.

Of course the difference is that the women's team hadn't been a few minutes away from beating UCLA in the Robins Center earlier in the season. The lax team knows it had that game in hand against Cornell and blew it. We may not win this one, but it won't be because we are afraid of the moment or the opponent. We also held them to their second-lowest goal total of the season. If anything, I'd say we have the mental advantage here. Whether that plays to our favor on the field, who knows.

Paul Richards hopefully makes close to Dan’s salary because his coaching-recruiting the defense has contributed to the major success of our program for a number of years.
We are nationally recognized for our stalwart defense.

Yes. I went to the game on Saturday and had a great view of how organized that group is and how hard they play. Truly the definition of "rugged".

I surmise that Paul gets calls to run other programs and hope/suspect we do everything we can to keep him here.

The difference there is the women's team could never get UCLA on the schedule because in basketball - it doesn't work that way with 300+ teams and power conferences.

In lacrosse, with a much smaller pool of just 78 teams, much easier to play against top competition because 32% of the teams are in the top 25 from the start.

What I am saying is that the perception of UR Lacrosse could change on a national level with a good showing against Cornell. WIN - and it changes overnight. Keep it close, and the buzz the team has built all season continues into next season. Lose big - and UR lacrosse continues to be a nice story of a team that wins a lower tier league, but after that - not much happens.

I don't think the team will lose big and think they will actually be a close game that could go either way. So I think safe to say UR Lacrosse is on the rise.

We are on the rise and Quint Kessenich who is considered by many to be the guru of college men's lacrosse has been praising our program. He said whoever plays Richmond in the tournament will have a big challenge and we are considered a dark horse for the Natty. While obviously a win over Cornell would be huge our program has already earned respect. Part of the challenge is that certain conferences with the ACC as an example start the season with most if not all of their programs in the top 20 which makes it easier for them to notch top 20 wins. Think that factor was large with UNC getting first tournament game homefield even though certain stats had us 8th and them 9th at the end of the season.

I get all that for sure and don't disagree. I was just saying that as far as the actual game goes, I don't think it's much of a comparison to the women facing UCLA. That was a huge mountain to climb, we had never seen them before, it was on their court, etc. In this case, we've already seen this team and should have beaten it, so I think our guys will be very confident and rightfully so.

If we can hold Kirst to 2 or 3 goals and not 6 or 7, I like our chances. I don't know who has the physiological edge with them knowing they got away with one or us giving it up late but I know that this team knows that they can win and are on a mission. Now that the monkey is off their back after winning at Carolina they can play free. Cornell has a lot more to lose than we do. If we keep it close late, sphincters for the Big Red are going to get so tight you won't be able to drive a BB through them with a ball peen hammer.

Agree - keep it close and entering the final minutes, the pressure goes on Cornell. The one down side to playing them so well earlier this year, UR will not likely catch them by surprise now. Cornell knows it will be a battle - but the pressure is on them. They are the 1 seed. They are playing at home. They are expected to win. They are expected to make final four, etc. UR should play loose and free, and keep it close and pressure will really clamp down on Cornell.

We have a decent shot at this one, can't ask for more than that. UNC heard all week about how dangerous we were, etc etc, and then got out to a 4-goal lead at home and still couldn't beat us. I think the advantage is ours because Cornell knows we should have beaten them and could do it this time.

Think 10 of our current players are from New York - don't know if any are as close to Hofstra as Vigue's home was to Chapel Hill.............

I thought I might have seen you on the video feed, Mo! Thanks for making the trip and supporting the team! I made the trip to support the women's lacrosse team when they crushed Marquette and lost to UNC in a nailbiter in Chapel Hill a few years back in the NCAAs. That was back when I lived in the East Coast within a 10 hour drive!😉

Just like we could never get #1 seed Texas on the schedule, at home no less?!?

Go Creo - that is great and Meyer and all the others....................Lots of family and friends at the game........................

I pretty much totally disagree with you. Richmond has gotten to the level of being a national recognized program
before this year. When you constantly end up in the top ranked list of teams, people notice. It may be my prejudice, but in Maryland when I mention Richmond and lacrosse I usually get - “they have a great program.”
Probably not in Nevada. LOL

UR first has built its program with people from top lacrosse schools (Chermotti-Duke) then bring in a broadcast guy (Stasia-UVA) who is well known in lacrosse circles and lastly have been successful in competing over the years against some big name schools: ND, Duke, UNC, Georgetown, UVA, etc…You hire the right people and get out of the way and let them build a solid foundation.

Agree 100% Carolina...glad you mentioned Starsia...I really enjoy him on the home MLAX broadcasts...when he starts talking about the team continuing to get better as the season progressed and becoming capable of making an NCAA run people listen...he's got tremendous credibility...

believe Starsia was among the first LAX observer to point out there was no "super" team this year leaving the national championship wide open, giving squads like the Spiders an opportunity to make some noise...so far it looks like he could be right...

Go Spiders!

Are we one more win away from Satchmo lacrosse road trip videos with Tom Petty playing in the background? Or are we already there? :)

Well - I guess the next question from a non-lacrosse person, how will payments from the school effect UR lacrosse. I would expect the top programs will pay their lacrosse players, and while it might not be a lot of money (compared to football or basketball) - I would think this is a very easy sport, given the low amount of participants - where a school with the right investment, can make a lot of progress very quickly.
Men's lacrosse is about to increase from 12 to 48 full scholarships for the entire roster - will UR make that investment? Or at the very least increase it into the mid-30's? And with 48 people on the roster, will UR dedicate 1 million in payments to the lacrosse team, when you spread that out - it only averages 20K a person, so again - not a lot of money, but I have to imagine the top lacrosse programs that we strive to compete with - such as the Marylands, Syracuse, Duke, UNC, Notre Dame, Penn State, Ohio State, etc - will make that investment without hesitation and it might create a very clear seperation going forward in the lacrosse world.

Any inside information on how UR intends to handle the lacrosse team with increased scholarships and pay for play setup?

I live in Colorado now (and absolutely love it, btw). One of my kid's school teachers is out the later part of the week for her kid's graduation and potential participation in the lacrosse state championship if they win in the state semis tomorrow. I mentioned we had just watched our Richmond Spiders lacrosse team defeat UNC to make it to the National Quarterfinals. She responded back that she was not surprised Richmond advanced. So even out here in Colorado within the lacrosse world, we are known to have a great program.
