2025 MLAX Schedule

Seemed like a mixed bag yesterday on faceoffs. I haven't looked at the stats but my recollection would tell me that they got the better of things overall and they were better at turning those wins into direct scores on a few critical occasions.
They beat us 19–8 at the X...not great, Bob.

From the Inside Lacrosse article:

Cornell face-off man Jack Cascadden was a huge difference-maker, winning 70% of his draws (16-of-23) after Michael Melkonian (3-of-4) provided an initial spark to start to turn the tides after Richmond had gotten out to its big early lead.

On the plus side for us Jared Chenoy got back on faceoff duty for a limited time as he is coming off of injury.

Cascadden is 6-3,220.A little extra leverage with those dimensions.

14) Richmond

Lively crowd on Sunday in the Spider Web, Robbins Stadium, as Richmond took an early 6-1 lead. Big Red needed time to defrost. Richmond feasted on a porous defense. Ground ball success parlayed. LSM Tommy Stull is a menace. CU regrouped, took over, and tied the score 8-8 in the third quarter. Richmond once again forged ahead 10-8 but was outscored 4-1 late. Aidan O’Neil is the centerpiece of the offense.

Spiders play UMBC this weekend. If Richmond makes the NCAA Tournament, they’ll be a total nightmare to play in the first round.

IL Staff's Top 20: There Are No Perfect Teams

“13. Richmond (3 - 2)

There aren’t many defensemen in Division I who can handle the CJ Kirst assignment. Richmond’s Hunter Smith is one of them.

“We think Hunter is a teamer All-American,” Spiders coach Dan Chemotti said postgame. “He's great. We go, defensively, how he goes. He's been guarding the top matchup since he was a freshman. The way he prepares himself, the type of athlete that he is, how much studying he does on the other teams’ best guy. He's elite at all levels there.”

Aside from sliding upfield to Willem Firth’s offhand to leave Kirst open for his first goal, Kirst’s next two goals came on a dunk at the end of the half and a finalizer move on another defender. Smith caused two turnovers and scooped three groundballs, forcing Kirst into some sloppy play early and especially toward the end of the third quarter.

The Spiders are No. 7 in IL’s adjusted defensive efficiency rankings in large part to Smith’s elite athleticism and preparation. Shortstick Jack Pilling was also excellent in causing some chaos in the middle of the field and in settled sets and is one of the best 1-on-1 shorties in the game. Add in reigning MAAC DPOY Mitchell Dunham (2CT, 4GB vs. Cornell) and nobody will want to play defensive coordinator Paul Richards’ group in May. ”

Yes to that - Hunter Smith is a tenacious defender and totally agree with Chemotti's assessment..............Without his defense our program would not be where we are..............
