2025-2026 Non Conference Schedule

And maybe mentioned here but I missed it but what about recruiting HS players, Schedule like this probably won't entice kids coming here.
Same with transfers. And if I were a coach recruiting the same guys we do, I would certainly make sure I let all transfers and recruits know how bad our schedules were the past 2 years. It's just disgusting.

Don't hold your breathe. He just did his interview the other day saying how hard it is for A-10 teams like us to schedule P5 programs, even citing several "peer" programs who are in the same boat. Except none of the programs he cited are in the same situation. They all learned from last year (particularly SLU and Davidson) course corrected and now have really nice OOC schedules this year. We did not adjust, we just complained.

The question I would really like to know the answer is this.
Is Mooney gaslighting us in that interview? OR
Does Mooney not know what the other A-10 program's cited OOC schedule is, despite it being public knowledge?

If it is the latter, it demonstrates a level of inattentiveness, if it is the former, woo boy.
Regardless of the answer to your second paragraph, this is just more evidence that his time has passed. This along with everything else related to the men’s bb program, it’s past time for a complete overhaul.

Are we even trying for road only games with majors? If not, Mooney should quit complaining about how hard it is to schedule quality games. If so, how many majors turned us down? If not all 70+ of them, again, quit complaining. And, what about quality mid majors? Seems like these should be easy to get home and homes with. We trying for those? If not, again, quit complaining Mooney.

the current slate doesn't have one game to get excited about. we could go undefeated and not raise an eyebrow.
I still expect we'll add a good game or two, though. we desperately need to.
With 13 games, we should do a heck of a lot better than a good game or two, but I realize when you are 0 for 11, this is the best we can hope for.

And as we all should know by now, we never dominate even a terrible OOC schedule. Main case in point: last year's. So prepare yourselves for a 7-6 effort against this slop.
Slop is a great word for it. I think I mentioned garbage earlier. What other names should we call our schedule? We can just add to these and keep adding:

Garbage
Slop

I expect we will too. 1 buy game road/1 neutral. Maybe up in Anacostia. but only a personal preference. I like being 1 of the only paying Richmond fans in attendance. That and formerly the Gazelle Group mte's were closest to our staples.

regardless our own Philly Bob said we could go 13-0 OOC and not be at large. also don't forget...

Just win more. Just go 14-4 A10.

if we go 14-4 in the A10, I'll be upset that we didn't give ourselves a chance at good wins ooc.
9-9 in the A10 and we might as well have scheduled harder since we weren't getting an at large anyway.
5-13 in the A10 like last year? well then we scheduled appropriately again.

Agree, agree, disagree. I see no benefit at all to having such a pathetic schedule. None.

Just like our NIL and spending to pay players - maybe we have taken the "reasonable" trend to our schedule. Lets be "reasonable" in our spending of NIL and paying players, and at the same time, be "reasonable" with our schedule.

Why not just play games that are within driving distance and save a bunch of money on the charter flights - thats reasonable, right?

That's more or less what we're doing...will have to fly to Belmont and Orlando, but that's it so far in the OOC. Even the H&Hs we have are or were mostly driving distance on the returns...W&M, ODU, ECU. Southern Illinois is the only flight hanging over our heads for the following season so far.

we can spin this. reducing our carbon footprint is our social responsibility.

Our program reminds me of the Redskins (err Commanders) in the years before the sale of the team. Everyone knew the owner had to go for change to happen but until he left the team was in a state of purgatory. No really good players wanted to go there, fans were apathetic, obligatory lip service to the fanbase, even when they did something OK on the field, it was overshadowed by the complete ineptness of the entire operation.

That is where we are now. And the reality is things like scheduling a completely non descript OOC will only hasten the change that needs to happen.

Mooney isn’t gaslighting us, he is gaslighting the A10.

We go 0-13 vs this OOC and 18-0 vs A10…

This schedule is pretty gruesome, and I don’t hold out much hope that there are pocket aces coming with the final reveal.

It really begs the question if this is intentional or if this staff is just unable to identify/secure better games.

Neither is a good look.

Yea but it's a neutral site game, not h & h. We got a home game against Southern Virginia!

vcu schedules the anti-Ryan Odom game... Yet another way Mooney is screwing us over. If he had left, we could at least schedule the anti-Mooney game with Air Force. But he's still here, so no dice!

Good point. Both reasons are pathetic. I think it has to be intentional, which is really disappointing, frustrating, and disgusts me big time.

Bona gets a H&H with FAU. The Owls are not the team they were a few years ago, but #111 in the NET isn't terrible.

I wish there were some media types to question him on this. He tells them how hard it is to schedule, then we see other A10 teams getting good games, but no questions/prompting Mooney why other A10 and mid majors can get games?
Mooney avoids the media so much that their isn't much opportunity. If Awod would have been a serious journalist and done a bit of homework, that would have made for some great conversation. But instead he let his staffer fawn all over Mooney.

JOC won't ask either but he knows what happens if he tries to bite the hand that feeds him, they will just cut him off.

I feel like a few (pretty major) tweeks to this turd of a schedule would make it fine.

start with the two remaining games. make them both middle of the road high major teams and play anywhere (but it would be nice to get one fun home game). then sub out the D3, VMI and Citadel games for top 125ish mid major games.

that's really all it takes. a lot to ask, I know. but if surrounded by some better games, the rest of the schedule works for me.

Even after all that Sman, that would still leave us with 8 games against teams who finished with a NET of 176 or worse last year. 6 of those is plenty. So our garbage schedule is so bad, to make it acceptable to me, we would need to add 2 majors and change 5 of the other games. 5!!!!!! That's how pitiful our schedule is IMO.

That would have been more like our schedule 2 years ago, which was maybe good enough to get us an at large had we gone 10-3 OOC instead of 8-5:

3 majors: Florida, Colorado, BC.
4 good mid majors: UNLV, Wichita St, UNI, Charlotte.
6 against teams with bad NETs., which should be the most we want to play.

Wait, so your telling me, if we just get rid of our crappy games and replace them with some really good games, our schedule would be better.

VT, at least we wouldn't have any teams 313+ NET teams. we had 5 of those 2 years ago. those are useless.
like the Citadel and VMI this year. and the D3 game.

yeah, but I don't think I'm unrealistic asking for teams around 125 that we could get home and homes with.. so many teams we should be able to schedule in that range.

82 High Point
84 Lipscomb
91 Akron
102 UNCW
106 UAB
115 Chattanooga
116 Samford
etc...

Of course we should. We clearly are not trying for these games. It's unreal.

well we did with Furman, Belmont, and Illinois State. good solid games.
but they shouldn't be the best games on the schedule, and they shouldn't be surrounded by stinkers.

??? I think Belmont was part of an earlier contract and the other 2 teams are part of our 4 team MTE with no majors in it. So, I give us no credit at all this off season for Belmont and the MTE, when plenty of teams in our own conference are in better ones. I'm not saying it's a terrible MTE, but I certainly can't say we did a good job finding this MTE.

So, looking at the first 11 games, which include a D3 game, a recently added game against The Citadel, VMI, and 5 other games against 176 or worse NET teams, it certainly looks intentional to me.

You could just as well substitute the name of every other coach VCU has had while we’ve been stuck with coach for life, and the statement would still be accurate. They come and go at VCU, but somehow they successfully schedule and continue to win and to own CM.
