I'll say up front - as a disclaimer - the portal can be a bit of a crapshoot. I thought all the guys we landed had some good potential, whether it was misses on the evaluation, or misses on the coaching them up not sure. One thing I do know, is that Mooney put very very little value on defense. Instead focusing on best shooting team ever and offense.

Thinking about this, if we did the following, could have had a really good A10 team:

1) Retain Dji. Yes I know sman, its hard to compete with the allure of the SEC and the $ SEC. But never got the impression that Dji was a moon favorite (again not enough offense and too much defense). If I was Mooney, I put a hard push on to Dji's dad. Try to get PQ to match or come close to LSU offer. Let dad know Dji is going to be encouraged and pushed to score the ball and be a featured guy. Not getting Dji gutted our defense, hurt playmaking, and lost a number one glue guy in A10. HE WAS NOT VALUED ENOUGH. Bring the arguments, the proof is in the pudding as they say.
2) Chris Manon. We were in on this guy but did not land him, he went to Vanderbilt and put up modest numbers (similar to Grant Huffman) I think his offensive numbers for us would have been closer to that of when he played for Cornell. Some similarities to Dji in that a do everything on the court guy, super athlete.
3) Beagle - Did not have a super year here, but still think was a good pick up. Bigs harder to come by in the portal and in general, so not displeased.
4) Dusan - saw this guy play in prep school. Very impressive skill set at that time for a 6'8 guy. But even then was a bit of a huge ball stopper, and his four years in college did not seem to change his game. All offense and no defense, and no ball movement. Dji returning and Manon in the fold (even though dont play same position) replace the need for him.
5) GWIII and AP - I think these were good shots at guys with potential. But AP does not have the overall game of Dji or Mannon. Think he better served as a PF off the bench, teach him to play some interior D. GWIII I'm still not convinced he was getting enough PT. Really would have liked to see him get a stretch of games with 15+ minutes before he was injured.

I know folks are going to say we couldn't get Dji or Manon, but that is BS. That is where a dynamic coach can come in and pull resources, use a Kenny Atkinson, got get the damn NIL and sell the player. Not Mooney though.

Now we have a "competitive" team with my players, and we don't red shirt the freshman. We get them minutes.

We have something like this:
Starters
Guards/Wings - Hunt, Manon, Dji
Center - Walz (put him in there day one getting 30 minutes and maybe he figures it out sooner instead of doubting himself splitting with Beagle)
Forward - Open competition with JRob, AP, Beagle, Soulis
Let Bryson compete for minutes. Roche as shooter off bench.

That is my reboot. I could have thrown out far fetched scenarios, but this is one that could have happened with the right attitude and energy from Mooney.

yeah, imagine Dji and Manon defensively on the wings. changes everything on that end.

we'd still need better shooting from our guards though. Hunt, Tyne, and White combined to go 75-276 from 3 (27.2%). Last year King hit 84 himself ... at a 41.4% clip.

we weren't much better at forward. Dusan and AP combined to go 71-256 (27.7%).

the shooting on this team has been horrendous.

Idk how you keep Dji, to your point he had to fight like hell to get on the court, I’d be shocked if there wasn’t some bitterness there, plus I think 90% of kids want to try it at a P5 school if the chance comes.

My changes would have been simple. Give GW3 a fair chance to play and don’t redshirt anyone for developmental reasons.

I think 23 is saying we should have tried harder to keep Dji, but I don't know that we didn't.
for anyone not a biased Spider fan, his decision was the right one ... and was likely pretty easy.

What if we payed him the same money? He is playing for a bottom dweller in the SEC. Yes, the SEC is a monster this year, but he was a starter but complimentary player. May have had a bigger role here. You are so definitive. If I were him, and didn't think we were trying our hardest and the money was hugely different, yes would have made the same decision. But just like I don't know that we didn't make a huge effort to keep, you don't know that we did or didn't either. Based on Mooney's treatment of him over the years, I tend to side with my thinking.

I don't think we would have even been in the LSU NIL ballpark last year.

but it's more than that. he already graduated and played 4 years here. you have the chance to play an extra year in the SEC or ACC, etc ... and they have a plan to play you? to me you absolutely jump at that. it's the experience of a lifetime. what do you gain from a 5th year in the A10?
but that's me.

I get it. But Jarod Stevenson had NC State offer, and Curtis Blair had ACC offers - back when it was a premier league. But those were different coaches. Anyway, yes, if it were come back for a year under Mooney vs power league opportunity - I would likely take power league. I just see no evidence what so ever that Moon made a run at him coming back.

yeah, I do think it's different for a grad transfer too. he already got his degree here and played 4 years. plus played a big role as a senior with 31 mpg. think it was the right time to try another level with his bonus year.

Sometimes people just want to try something different.

Just wish he would have got on an NCAA team this season, that is my other disappointment with his choice. I am quickly losing any teams to follow in the NCAA. Delaware had a great run, but just came up short. SDSU is in a bubble fight off with a good Boise team tomorrow. At this rate, I may be all in on UCSD.
Louisville is my team at this point / love Pat Kelsey , Reyne smith , Chuckie H
