2020 Football Season-Good news/Bad news- Spiders hold off on football's Wednesday(7/15) report date

I believe in one of those close losses (Rhode Island or Maine), we had two extra points blocked and returned for two points each. It was truly bizarre.

Ah yes I remember that play it was Maine and I was like Wtf. I hate to be a pessimist and certainly could be wrong but I feel that team would crush the product we put on the field the last two seasons even with the interim staff in place we had then.

That team was like a video game. Line play wasn’t strong and fundamentals weren’t very good. But they had some skill positions that were fun to watch. It was a Dan Snyder team.

God I just imagined him as our AD and nearly hurled. Will say Rivera admin so far has been a breath of fresh air.

Tired of all the doom and gloom predictions. If we all stay shut in until the world is safe again, we will never come out. We can be safer without burying our whole body in the sand. I'm 71, I sure don't want to die of coronavirus. But I also don't want to spend the last 10-15 years of my life cowering in fear. Every day that passes during this pandemic is another 24 hours that I'll never get back. And for you younger folks, there WILL be other pandemics during your lives, but there might not be a United States as you know it now if we don't get this economy going. My opinion...

Stakeholders across FCS college football say conferences are proceeding with plans for a 2020 season. Most preseason teams/polls/virtual media days - an unofficial start - are planned for July provided season starts on time. Contingency plans a factor. Fingers crossed everywhere.

Madness Sports synopsis (return off/ return def):

Richmond 9/8, offense has to replace both wr. Overall, the team is experienced but needs to take the next step.

St. Francis Northeast 8/9, can the running game improve to get the offense to the next level? Defense might be best in NEC.

Elon 7/8, qb Cheek is a fine player. Running game is weak. If defense can fill two key losses, should be good.

Maine 8/8, all starters lost on defense were on the line. Offensive line should be tough, but consistency improvement overall is the key.

New Hampshire 8/7, offense needs to score more. Defense has to replace 2 cb and 2 lb, so pass defense needs addressed first.Coach Sean McDonnell returns from a medical leave of absence, and he is anxious to get his one-time playoff staple back in the postseason. Safety Evan Horn is a key member of the senior class that was a part of the Wildcats’ last playoff season in 2017. The CAA’s lowest-scoring offense should improve behind quarterback Max Brosmer and running back Carlos Washington Jr.

Towson 7/7, many injury returnees but qb Flacco is a huge loss. Team should be good enough to finish in middle of pack. The Tigers have to replace quarterback Tom Flacco, perhaps with dual-threat Ryan Stover, who was the starter in 2017, or Jake Constantine, who has announced a grad transfer from Weber State. They’re bolstered by the return of sixth-year running back Shane Simpson (4,751 career all-purpose yards) and linebacker Ricky DeBerry from season-ending injuries. Safety Cody Tippett picked off five passes last season as a junior.

James Madison 4/5, massive losses all over but rbs Agjei-obese & Hamilton are the nation's best combo. Defense needs to replace two best players. With three appearances in the last four FCS title games, the Dukes are built to withstand graduation losses, but coach Curt Cignetti is replacing 13 starters. The running backs unit is superb, led by seniors Percy Agyei-Obese and Jawon Hamilton, who combined for 2,135 rushing yards. Two-year backup quarterback Cole Johnson seeks to take over as a senior. Defensive tackles Adeeb Atariwa and Mike Greene form a tag-team of terror. The special teams will remain elite with the return of placekicker Ethan Ratke (58 career field goals) and punt returner D’Angelo Amos (16.6-yard average, five career TD returns).

Coronavirus roundup: NFL coaches allowed to return to team facilities on Friday
By The Associated Press 13 hrs ago

https://www.richmond.com/ap/sports/...cle_166e7c73-ad71-529c-b19e-4ea34877f443.html

“....College athletes test positive: At least five Alabama football players have tested positive for the coronavirus, according to 247Sports, which cited multiple unnamed sources. Players returned to Tuscaloosa, Ala., this week and are set to start voluntary workouts on Monday.
Other schools to report positive cases include Oklahoma State, Marshall, Ole Miss, Michigan State and Iowa State. Cases include athletes across different sports as well as staff members. Seven Arkansas State athletes tested positive, and all of them were asymptomatic.

Notre Dame announced that it will test all its football players for COVID-19, starting June 15, before they can begin using the school’s athletic facilities for voluntary workouts....”

No one seems to be shaken up which is good. The schools noted above are taking remedial action in stride.

SFU optimistic about 2020.Issues schedule with video today.

Game One: September 3 at Richmond

Saint Francis will open the season at Richmond in search of its first win over a CAA member. The Spiders went 5-7 in 2019, but three of their wins came over nationally-ranked opponents (No. 18 Maine, No. 19 Delaware and No. 20 Stony Brook).

Richmond's defense is set to return the CAA Defensive Rookie of the Year in linebacker Tristan Wheeler and fellow linebacker and All-CAA First Team recipient Tyler Dressler. Dual-threat redshirt senior Joe Mancuso will lead the Spiders under center after leading all CAA quarterbacks in rushing. He accounted for 23 total touchdowns via his arm and legs.

Maryland is allowing the football players to start individual workouts on campus tomorrow.
They first have to be checked out by the medical staff. And the medical staff has to be on hand
during the workouts.

Valparaiso and Central Connecticut State won't play each other on Sept. 19 as originally scheduled. Both are seeking an 11th opponent.

If Ivy’s cancel,CCSU will be down to 9 games since they won’t be playing Columbia.

Dear Spider Football Season Ticket Holder,

We hope you and your family are continuing to stay safe and well during this time. We are writing to remind you this is the final week to renew your football season tickets and to update you on the latest information we have regarding your football season tickets for the 2020 football season.

In March, the Spider Ticket Office began the football renewal process by offering our season ticket holders the lowest price point ever for a 5-game schedule at Robins Stadium. Season ticket holders who renew for the 2020 season will receive significant savings over single game prices as well as access to many exclusive season ticket holder benefits throughout the season.

In April, in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, the Spider Ticket Office adapted new renewal deadlines and policies to assist you during this process. We extended the renewal deadline from its original date of May 1st to the current deadline of this Friday, June 12th. Additionally, at that time, we implemented the following options to our refund policy for your 2020 season ticket renewal payment in the event of a cancelled or partial season:
  • Transfer payments to the 2021 football season
  • Reallocate your payment to a tax-deductible donation to Spider Athletics
    • Receive a prorated refund based upon number of games played if the season is shortened
  • Receive a full refund of your payment if no games are played
We will continue to make plans to conduct a 2020 football season, however, we are reviewing models for a significantly reduced capacity at Robins Stadium to maintain social distancing and comply with all state, federal and University guidelines as it relates to COVID-19. At this time, the best chance to confirm your seat(s) in a reduced capacity Robins Stadium is to renew your season tickets by the June 12th deadline. We are unsure if we will have any available single game tickets for the 2020 season, but remain hopeful that we will be able to accommodate all season ticket holders in a reduced capacity Robins Stadium.

Policies and seating configurations that support a safe environment for Spider fans at Robins Stadium will be determined as more information and regulations are established in the coming months. We will continue to update you as decisions are made.

Should you wish to request a seating change or adjust the quantity of tickets on your account, please renew your current seats and note your requested change during your purchase. If we are able to accommodate seat changes, the ticket office will contact you in the coming months to go over all available options.

Please stay safe. We look forward to seeing you this Fall in Robins Stadium! If you have any questions, please contact the ticket office at 1-877-SPIDER-1 or at URTickets@Richmond.edu.

Sincerely,

Spider Athletics Ticket Office

VCU lays out protocols for athletes' return to campus

https://www.richmond.com/sports/col...cle_00d2bc32-4a52-5763-b72c-ca3ec8a9a314.html

“...As colleges around the country continue to facilitate the return of athletes to their campuses for workouts, VCU is following suit.

Ed McLaughlin, VCU vice president and director of athletics, said in an email that members of the school’s men’s and women’s basketball teams began returning to campus June 4, and that most will be back by June 24....”

HeroSports Preseason CAA Standings

PRESEASON RANKINGS
NOTE: These rankings are a prediction of what the standings will look like at the end of the season. It is the opinion of the author of this story and may differ from the order of our staff's Top 25 FCS rankings. Conference schedules are taken into consideration.

RANK TEAM
1 James Madison
2 Villanova
3 Delaware
4 Albany
5 New Hampshire
6 Elon
7 Richmond
8 Towson
9 Stony Brook
10 William & Mary
11 Maine
12 Rhode Island

THE REASONING: The No. 1 through No. 6 schools listed above are the ones I had on my HERO Sports Preseason ballot for our Top 25, in that order. However ... you can take No. 3 through No. 11 below, throw their school names on scribbled paper and in a hat, and pull them out, one by one. That's probably just as good a shot at this fall's order as any. Or why not go alphabetical?

The truth is, this league is good, and it has mega-parity. Two thirds of this league won between five and seven games last year overall. And two thirds of this league finished between 5-3 and 3-5 in CAA play. So if you profess to know what in the hell is going to happen in the CAA this fall, you're a liar, or you've invented a time-warp machine and flashed forward to Thanksgiving time, got the standings and you're cheating. I do think one defining difference with this morass of talented teams is that elite quarterback play will break the ties. I think a few big-time names will emerge from this pack below and will take their teams above the fray and into the postseason.

I do feel strongly that the best two teams on paper are James Madison and Villanova, but I'm not firm in the order I have that in below, either. And after the first two? Just watch the sparks fly. I'll be the first one looking for the coaches' preseason CAA poll that comes out later this summer. I'm sure they'll feel the same way in trying to rank this, and may just revert to last year's rankings after they throw their hands up in the air out of frustration.
