New-look Spiders face The Unknown, divided by three, entering Thursday opener vs. Jacksonville

The unknown, divided by three, awaits the University of Richmond Thursday night in its football season-opener against visiting Jacksonville University:
1. UR brought in six transfers during the offseason and its depth chart will include numerous players without much, or any, college experience. On a roster of 82 are 42 freshmen (18 redshirt freshmen, 24 true freshmen).
"We like our guys, and we think they're good players," said third-year coach Russ Huesman. "But there are going to bunch on there that we (have never) watched play in a game. Your guess is as good as my guess right now."
2. What will support be like at Robins Stadium? According to UR, this game was moved to Thursday night to accommodate fans' travel plans for the extended Labor Day holiday. It is the first scheduled regular-season weekday home game in the history of Robins Stadium, which is in its 10th year.
The Spiders last hosted a regular-season game on a Thursday night in 2005 (Massachusetts at UR Stadium, on Sept. 1). Classes begin Monday at UR.
"If it helps our administration, I'll do it. If they feel like it helps generate people into the stands, and students into the stands, I'm good with it," said Huesman. "I could care less. I'd rather play on Saturdays, but to open up on Thursday is fine."
An Aug. 29 first game ties for the earliest UR has opened in 136 years of football. The Spiders lost 34-7 at Temple on Aug. 29, 2002. Fifty years ago, Richmond opened its 10-game 1969 season on Sept. 20.
3. UR has never faced Jacksonville. The Dolphins, of Jacksonville, Fla., should not be confused with Jacksonville State, which is located in Jacksonville, Ala., belongs to the Ohio Valley Conference, and has advanced to the FCS playoffs each of the last six years.
Jacksonville State has won five consecutive OVC championships and 39 of its last 40 league games. Jacksonville University, which began playing football in 1998, belongs to the Pioneer Football League, the NCAA's only non-scholarship, football-only FCS conference. The PFL is among the most far-flung leagues in college sports. Other PFL members are Butler, Davidson, Dayton, Drake, Marist, Morehead State, San Diego, Stetson, and Valparaiso.
The PFL began play in 1993 and was formed in response to 1991 NCAA legislation that requires Division I schools to sponsor all sports at the Division I level. While PFL teams operate without scholarships, Richmond and other CAA programs work with 63, the NCAA limit in the FCS.
Jacksonville, known for its triple-option offense but adding more passing this season, went 2-8 last year, and was picked to finish eighth in the PFL's 10-team preseason poll. Among the Dolphins is running back Caleb Grimes, a 5-foot-10, 205-pound freshman from Benedictine who committed to Navy, spent time at Navy Prep in Newport, R.I., and then decommitted in February. He committed to Jacksonville in May and is expected to play special teams this year.
The NCAA awarded the PFL with an automatic bid to the FCS playoffs starting in 2013. PFL members are 2-6 in the FCS playoffs. San Diego, which has captured seven of the last eight PFL titles, won both FCS playoff games.
UR has faced one PFL opponent. The Spiders defeated Morehead State 55-10 in 2014. Richmond met Davidson, Dayton and Stetson long ago, before they were PFL members.
Richmond and Jacksonville are members of the Southern Conference men's lacrosse league.
Jacksonville is one of four non-CAA games UR will play this season as part of a 12-game schedule. FCS members are permitted, but not required, to play 12 regular-season games this year because there are 13 Saturdays between Labor Day Weekend and Thanksgiving in 2019. Outside of CAA competition, Richmond will also meet Boston College, Fordham, and Yale.
The UR-Jacksonville game will be televised by MASN, and streamed (no charge) at RichmondSpiders.com.
