what better way to start the Labor Day celebration than to see the Spiders begin to answer some of the questions about this year's squad...

I expect we'll be significant favorites in a season opener for the first time since 2014 versus Morehead State...

For you old timers, as far as I can remember the only time the two teams have met in a revenue sport was 1970 when the powerhouse Dolphins basketball team led by Head Coach Joe Williams came to Richmond to play the Spiders...they won 113-78...later played UCLA for National Championship losing 80-69...anyone remember Artis Gilmore and Pembroke Burroughs?...they were the original "twin towers"...I did not attend the game but believe it was probably at The Richmond Coliseum...

Enjoy the Countdown...

Go Spiders!

I was there with a date. We sat under the basket and all she could say
was how big those guys were.
It was so bad all we could do is laugh.

I was there too. Sat in first row under the basket. Those guys were big! They also had a good point guard, but I don't remember his name.

In 69-70 season:

In 2nd meeting,Dolphins beat UR at The Arena by 39.Gilmore had 27.JU played ECU the night before.

Initial meeting,Dolphins beat UR in JAX by 36.Gilmore had 38.
I know. I was there. That’s why I was asking FrontRoyal why he mentioned the Coliseum.

JACKSONVILLE (2-8 IN 2018)

PIONEER FOOTBALL LEAGUE (JU FINISHED 10TH IN 2018)

COACH: Ian Shields - At School: 4th year (14-17) Overall: 8th year (38-38)

LAST FCS POSTSEASON: None

2018 OFFENSE: 28.4 ppg. (53rd in FCS)

2018 DEFENSE: 38.7 ppg. (110th in FCS)

KEY GAME: Nov. 2 vs. Stetson: This was a 38-35 loss at Stetson last year, a team that finished tied for second in the conference with a 6-2 record. Jacksonville had a number of close losses in 2018, and a game like this will tell us if this team has improved.

Three Dolphins Make Preseason All-PFL Squad - Jacksonville University

https://judolphins.com/news/2019/7/30/three-dolphins-make-preseason-all-pfl-squad.aspx

SUM IT UP: The Dolphins saw a drop in the wins column from 2017 to last year, going from 7-4 overall to 2-8 and from 5-3 in the conference to 1-7. Three of those losses, which all came in a row at the start of October, were by seven points or less. With six offensive starters coming back and seven starters returning on defense, Jacksonville looks to turn those close losses into wins.

The pieces are in place offensively, starting with quarterback Calvin Turner Jr.(6-1,195)The Dolphins finished third in the FCS last season with 3,453 total yards rushing. A year after playing defensive back, Turner took over at QB and rushed for 1,431 yards and 17 TDs. The strong rushing attack also brings back its No. 2 rusher Garnett Nicolas(6-2,225) and No. 3 rusher Irvin Riley(5-9,190).Nicolas was a 2018 HERO Sports Freshman All-American.

A key for the offense is filling in three spots on the line. Only two starters return up front: Dane Cordell(5-10,285) and Logan Langemeier(6-4,240).

To get back to being competitive, the defense needs to improve after being toward the bottom of the FCS with 38.7 points allowed per game. The linebacking core has solid starting experience coming back with Caysaun Wakeley(5-11,200),Ethan Hull(6-1,220) and Cedric Wilcox(5-11,235).Wakeley is the top returning tackler after he totaled 54 last year, which ranked third on the team.

OUR TAKE: This is a program that's used to having success. The last time the Dolphins were below .500 was 2013. They bounced back in 2014 and 2015 with 9-2 records. While the 2019 squad may not hit nine wins, we do expect this team to improve to around .500 in conference play.

TOP RETURNEE: Jr./QB Calvin Turner Jr. (All-PFL Honorable Mention, 1,431 yards rushing and 17 TDs)

THE FOUNDATION: So./RB Garnett Nicolas (2018 HERO Sports Freshman All-American, rushed for 718 yards and 9 TDs); Jr./OL Dane Cordell (All-PFL HM); Sr./LB Caysaun Wakeley (All-PFL HM, 54 tackles); Sr./DB CJ Lewis(6-1,200) (All-PFL HM, led team with 8 PD); Sr./RB Irvin Riley (421 yards rushing and 5 TDs)

THE QUOTE: "I thought the defense got the better of it…I thought our guys were flying around on defense and were really active. I think we made some real strides on that side of the football and it was nice for our defensive guys to go validate that in the Spring Game," he said. -- head coach Ian Shields said after the spring game.

Rex Morgan(6-5)-Batman and Robin duo with Gilmore(7-2)Terrific shooter.Averaged 27 his junior year.
Scary team with those 2 plus Pembroke Burrows at 7-0.

the nice thing about the arena (other than the great concerts and professional tennis) was how close you could get to the court. Standing next to Gilmore you got a sense of just how big that man was.

Vaughn Wedeking. He lived in my neck of the woods. Except for being an Oregon football fan, he seemed like a great guy. I did not know him.

I know the JU coach, he was a QB at Oregon State, and also was the OC at Army for a number of years. He is also a great guy. He will have his team ready.

Football Championship Subdivision News Story - FCS 2019: Pioneer Football League Preview | STATS | FCS Football

JACKSONVILLE

LOCATION: Jacksonville, Florida

STADIUM: D.B. Milne Field

HEAD COACH: Ian Shields (14-17, three seasons; 30-23 overall)

2018 RECORDS: 2-8 overall, 1-7 PFL (10th)

PROJECTED RETURNING STARTERS: 13 (6 offense/7 defense)

KEY PLAYERS: Calvin Turner Jr., QB, Jr.; Garnett Nicholas, B-Back, So.; Irvin Riley, Slot, Sr.; Craige Saxton, WR, So.; Dane Cordell, C, R-Jr.; Logan Langemeier, OL, So.; Myles Harris, DL, Jr.; Cedric Wilcox III, LB/DE, Jr.; Caysaun Wakeley, LB, Sr.; Ethan Hull, LB, So.; C.J. Lewis, CB, Sr.; T.J. Coley, S, Jr.

KEY LOSSES: Jake Dempsey, OL; Dakota Trice, LB; Javier Arce-Ramirez, PK

OUTLOOK: Last year's poor season was uncharacteristic of the Dolphins, who allowed nearly 38.7 points per game and beat only Butler in the PFL while finishing in last place. The odd thing was Turner enjoyed great success at quarterback, converting from safety to rush for 1,431 yards and 17 touchdowns. However, he is returning from a broken leg suffered in the final game. Nicolas, a fullback, and Riley were potent complements to Turner. LB Wakeley was No. 3 in tackles last season and leads all returnees.

Coach says it's the healthiest squad he's seen coming out of pre season practice, I took it he was talking about in his entire head coaching career and not just his UR seasons...

virtually everyone on the two deep roster is available versus JU...

if so, maybe some of the changes he's implemented in practices routines have paid dividends...now we need to execute well...

Go Spiders!
