2016-17 schedule

I do know what the statistic is, which is why I posted that. That is the statistic. I looked it up earlier in the year when we had this discussion and posted it then, so I recall it.

You mean this statistic?

STATS LLC. - there have been 981 third time matchups across Division I college basketball over the past 10 seasons. The teams entering the third game 2-0 are a combined 710-271 (.724 winning percentage) in the third meeting.

I just don't know if they define "equal" teams, if so how they do, or even how I would. I assume it is not uniformly 73% without regard to any other criteria selected.

No, I think it's 73% in every possible situation, across all games ever played. :D

I'd guess that over 10 years, with that many games, it's probably a ecent cross-section of scenarios – evenly matched teams, unevenly matched ones, etc.

I wonder what the probability is that Tbone is glad he brought up the subject of us scheduling a game against JMU 3 years in a row? :D

I can say with 100% certainty that I didn't bring it up, and 99% probability that I see rough waters for CM if he loses a third straight game to JMU.

Should be a four-team championship bracket, so first-game winners will play each other, and losers will play each other.

Hopefully the benefits of playing Maryland will outweigh the negatives of (likely) playing BC. Or we could just beat Maryland and not worry about the BC RPI drag.

BC was 166 in the RPI RPI in 2014-15 and 113 in 2012-13. if they're in that range, it would be a decent win. it's not like our RPI was a big boost for anyone last year.

Who cares about RPI?? We need that KenPom boost. Hang that banner!!

Joking aside, RPI has been deemphasized by the selection committee year over year and kenpom rankings were used to justify inviting Wichita State to the NCAA tournament last year and snubbing St. Bonaventure. The selection committee has basically said they will use whatever metric they want to assess each team in order to justify their decisions. If you want to be somewhat safe on selection Sunday as a team outside the P5 you need a high kenpom ranking.

Maryland could very well be a top 5 team when we play them. I'm always up for playing the best even if that means losing badly. Playing tougher competition is how we will improve as a team and get ready for the A10 season

Great! That's a nice tournament lineup for the Barclay Classic. Here is what I have for the OOC schedule. UR should have 11-12 games total. So a few more to schedule. Anyone know of any I'm missing?

Home (5)
Wake Forest (ACC)
Texas Tech (B12)
ODU
Robert Morris
TBD - Barclay's opponent

Away (1)
JMU

Neutral (3)
Maryland (ACC)
BC-K-State (ACC/B12)
TBD (ACC/A10 challenge)

Huge for recruiting. Huge for the direction of this program. These opportunities are few. I'm already excited.

Why is this so huge? We play these type of games every year? We played Florida, West Virginia, Cal last year. We played UNC, Kansas, UCLA and several other prominent BCS programs in the past 3-4 years. I'm excited too that we get a shot a Maryland but we've been playing these types of games nearly every year since joining the A-10.

I don't see playing Maryland as some game changing event for our recruiting or our program. It would be a very big win for our season next year if we can beat them though.

Maryland's All American guard, Melo Trimble has pulled out of the NBA draft-so he'll be back.
And if we get embarrassed, will that hurt recruiting?

It certainly won't help in the DC area. High three star guys are hopeful they'll get offers from a place like UMD, but are 99.99% of the time going to be 4 year players. If Richmond shows they can handle playing teams like UMD on national TV, Mooney can make a case for UR as a good basketball destination, one that allows you to get a top notch degree/job connections at the same time.

Not getting embarrassed should be attainable with the right effort level. I don't mean to say this is a must win, because the Spides will be up against bigger, better guys for the most part. But it would go a long way to helping the young guys to buy in to Mooney as a leader, if they were to knock off one of the better programs in the country. Knocking off the bottom feeders in the ACC is nice, but doesn't have the same effect.

You kind of made my point for me. In 3-4 years, you've played games against 3-4 top programs (not sure if any of those were top 10 at the time, but I suspect some were). I expect UMD to be a cut above last year's Florida, WVU and Cal. Plus, UMD is in the same recruiting region.

They are a state school with a historically good team; they are from a major urban center; and, they will be highly ranked (probably). This happens at most once per season. A win here would say a lot about the program in general. 22-9 with a win over UMD is miles better than 21-10 with a win over GW.

Cal was a pretty good team last year. 2 future NBA lottery picks on the team, they were ranked in the Top 15 in the country at the time, and ended up as a 4 seed in the NCAA tournament.

But I get your point, Maryland. This will be our biggest opportunity on the schedule to make a statement. A win would be fantastic on a number of levels but I remember how big our Cal win felt last year when we got it and then the wheels fell off

West Virginia was also very, very good last year. They were a 3 seed, a top 10 team on the s-curve I believe. We usually beat at least one ranked opponent per year, maybe it will be Maryland next year. I don't quite see them as a top 10 team next year, more in the 10-20 range which is 3-5 seed range, right where WVU and Cal were last year.

Don't get me wrong- I love that we are playing the Terps and think we should have a back and forth like we do with Wake.
But, I don't see it helping our recruiting, unless as already said, we win.

UR should have 11-12 games total.

We should have 13. We are in an exempt tourney. The goal is to be in 1 every year so you can have the 31 game max. 13 OOC/18 A10. If we don't have 13 we are doing something wrong like last year when we inexplicably had 12.

Yes, it can be very soothing, but it's also a lot of fun to smoke.
Don't listen to the Weegies. Ask the Amsterdamians.

Weegie? Weegie Thompson? Big oaf of a tight end who made it to the Steelers in the 80s when they had down years?

I was referring to common nickname for Norwegians....and perhaps the inferior quality of one of their crops.

It would seem we need two more buy games at home and 2 true road games. One that we get our teeth kicked in at a BCS school and one we can win.

Does anyone know why the series with WM stopped?

I would like to see us alternate playing W&M and VMI on our schedule and alternate between VT and UVA

I'd rather play W+M, VT and UVA every year. VMI is consistently horrible, they haven't had a top 150 basketball team in like 3 decades at least. W+M is decent every once in a while.

You have to keep in mind that when FRS says Top 150, he means miles from UR.

I like UR playing the other schools that were part of what was known as the "Big Five" in our beloved Commonwealth (VT, UVA, W&M, VMI). Years ago there was the "Big Six" when W&L was grouprd with the before mentioned schools.

How long ago was this, 50-60 years ago? I can't find any info about such a big 5 with google. The only Big 5 I know of are the schools in Philly.
