2/25 Saint Louis - Senior Day

What a terrific and fun game to watch. Great half time adjustments completely shut them down in the 2nd half. The team showed a lot of grit. Great to see Tyler take it to the rim. If keeps improving he will be averaging over 20 points a game next year. I thought all of our starters and players off the bench played well. The team is beginning to gel. Hopefully it is not too late. Go Spiders!

Yessss. This team gel’d last year in December and that didn’t work out. Let’s hope they come together at the end, win the A10 tourney and then make a run to the sweet 16 (and beyond).
Am I right Eight Legger and Spider4ever??

Well… we can hope! But considering that we needed all 40 minutes to beat one of the youngest teams in Division 1 on our home court with the most experienced team in college history, I’m probably not going to count on it. But it was an exciting game and a great atmosphere. I’m glad we pulled it out.

That was a weird game. I don’t get why we don’t play with the same level of intensity we did in the 2nd half in this game and every game. We have the bodies to put guys out there in the first half, we just don’t.
We’ve been a team of halves a lot this year - good first half & poor second half or flip that. A few games we’ve had 2 good halves such as vs St Bon. Tonight weak / avg first half and strong second half. Good teams play consistently 2 halves in way more games than not. And that unfortunately is why this late in the season we are fighting for double bye.

Good win but your statement “The team is beginning to gel.” Think about that - we have 2 regular season games remaining, and you think we are beginning to gel. Ponder that for a moment. I guess better late than never, but you’d think a mature and experienced team would begin to gel maybe 20 or so games ago.

When he’s hot he can sho…….but foot speed….not so much
You think two torn ACLs (the second one also included a torn MCL and torn meniscus, the triple crown of knee injuries) might have something to do with that?

Lots of players would have quit by now with two serious injuries like that. I have nothing but admiration for a guy like that.

Great game. I was there. Really enjoyed the experience. We usually only go to the VCU/UR game with our season tickets. We decided to go because this was an important game...for VCU.

We had a great time. I was disappointed in the turnout for the seniors. Whether or not any team is good or bad, these players put in a lot of hard work and deserve to be honored. However, the crowd seem to trickle in late. I guess it was the start time or something.

Anyway, thanks for the win. St. Louis losing really helps your friends over at VCU.

See you in DC. I'll be there by noon on Thursday, hope watch some great basketball. That is my favorite weekend of the season!

Wood agree 100%! Nick is playing to absolute best of his ability on two bad wheels. He deserves our full appreciation for his commitment.

Not to detract from a great comeback win, outstanding 2H defensive effort etc.....but going scoreless in final 3:12 is so typical. Thankful the D stepped up and SLU failed to get off a good shot at the end.

I’m sure there were adjustments but what turned the tide was effort, a sense of urgency I haven’t seen this year. Grace was leading the collective effort. Maybe we can get that going again in the last two games. This is why we have to get the double bye. We haven’t developed the bench strength needed to sustain that level of effort in a tournament, back to back games will tough but back to back to back……..impossible

Senior night with their families, the players just decided that they didn't want to lose in front of them on senior night. Maybe we should have invited their families to all of our games.

JOC article in RTD based on presser above:

My wife pointed out this quote to me this morning : “I just thought we were a little bit (soft), partly because we’re a fluid team and we move the ball, and that’s how we see the game and think the game,” Mooney said. “Sometimes, it’s just called for putting your body on somebody, and getting a rebound in a crowd, being as tough as you possibly can on a particular possession.”

Confirmation of what numerous forum members constantly say about the coaching philosophy. Interesting to find that changing one key element of the philosophy suddenly leads to a team that looks like it really cares and has a desire to win.

(Nice work by the RTD photographer too. A picture is worth a thousand words)

Notice over the last several weeks, Mooney has shortened the bench to Nick, Grace, and Crabtree. The others have gotten either no minutes or very minimal minutes at best. We are now pretty much 3 bench deep.

I saw that. Jeez. It's his team, his schemes, his system, his choices, his priorities. Seems like to me after all these years of doing the same things over & over with same results, he'd realize he is causing the problems as quoted in the one example above.

Crabtree should be better as he gets playing time because of his size and handle. He just looks very stiff especially when he shoots. Needs to relax which is tuff when you want to avoid the Mooney hook.

Yes, the team is playing better. We have won 6 of our last 8 and 10 of our last 14.

3 of those losses were Davidson by 3 points, VCU by 2 points and overtime to George Mason.

Mooney must be the slowest person in the Robins center. He just figured out we play soft?

Year after year the Same thing and we get players who can’t finish because they are exhausted in tournament play

Might be wise to be cautious about celebrating this win too much. Two primary reasons that the Spiders won this game are 1) senior night home game, 2) opponent is equal to, or lesser than Richmond.

St. Louis & Richmond are mirror images for the season. Both maybe NIT teams but nothing else. I didn't see a breakthrough reason to suddenly believe that this UR team can beat 2-3 stronger opponents on a neutral floor on consecutive days.
