2025 NIT changes

- 16 "exempt" teams are guaranteed the opportunity to host in first round.

- Exempt slots include the top two teams each from ACC and SEC not selected for NCAA, plus the top non-NCAA team from each the top 12 conferences. These slots from each conference will be determined by averaging a bunch of metrics like BPI, KPI, NET, KenPom, Torvik, etc.

- Regular-season champs who don't earn an NCAA bid will receive an auto bid to the NIT, provided their average ranking as above is 125 or better.

- The remainder of the field will be selected at large.

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Countdown - Delaware Blue Hens

this is one of the CAA games I will miss as both teams move on to their respective futures…after the historic W&M rivalry and the emotional JMU rivalry…the once powerful Blue Hens were my favorite game!

maybe this finale’ will have some of the Ward v. Flacco 2007, Lauletta and the Spiders versus Rooco’s Hens in 2017 or the drama of our remarkable 2022 win…there have been some very good memories versus the Blue Hens and some bitter ones too…

it's likely to be a very tough game for the Spiders…we’ve got Championship and FCS Playoff hopes…the Hens have nothing except the chance of finishing at the top of the CAA standings and blowing up the hopes of their opponents…Coach Carty believes he can keep his team motivated…

on Media Day Delaware was picked to finish 5th in the CAA…16 starters return from last season’s Playoff team... they include an All American and All CAA RB, their explosive QB and five offensive linemen…they averaged 31 points per game last season…their defense Portaled up adding five new faces…

Delaware could be the best squad Richmond faces this season…coming off of a bye week we’ll need to be ready to play our best to win this one…a win against a team likely to finish somewhere near the top of the CAA would bolster our Championship hopes and an FCS Playoff resume...

but I’m sure there’s nothing the Blue Hens would enjoy more than saying goodbye with a win at The Brick House!

Enjoy the Countdown!

Go Spiders!

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Prologue - Delaware

this is one of the series I will miss from the Yankee and CAA years...there have been some legendary games over the years, particularly in the CAA years...I can't forget 2007, 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2022...except for 2017 they were all Spiders victories!

Saturday most likely closes the series forever...let's hope the game lives up to some of its predecessors and gives Spiders' fans another good memory...

the once mighty Blue Hens were favored the last thing I read, and I don't think many folks who've seen Richmond's inconsistent play so far these season are surprised...Delaware, ineligible for the FCS Playoffs is playing each game as their Championship game...they are on a roll...but like the Spiders they have played a weak FCS schedule...They were tested by respectable Penn and Monmouth teams...

Coach Huesman said earlier this week Richmond has not played our best game yet...let's hope we've been saving it for Saturday!...I can't think of a finer way than to win this lame duck bowl and hopefully kick off a strong second half of the season...

calling on the 2007 spirit of Ward, Hightower, Vaughan, Sidbury and McBride to show up at The Brick House Saturday!...they rose to the occasion and refused to lose!

enjoy the prologue...

Deleware Game

I will go ahead a start a thread since no one else wants to comment on game yesterday. I know we play great when I can come on here and there are no posts. Everyone that regularly posts must be sad because there was not much to complain about. Great job by players and coaches responding to a big challenge that Deleware brought to town. We were by far the best team yesterday and made plays that champions need to make. We finished red zones drives with touchdowns. We created turnovers. We controlled the line scrimmage on both sides of the ball and we pressured the QB. Great effort all the way around and certainly appreciated by this fan.

Spiders Collective-Season Preview-Oct 4

The Collective is hosting a Men's Basketball "Season Preview" on Friday October 4th. It will be at the Queally Athletics Center and starts at 6:30pm. A video shot by the team will be put out on the social media platforms later today.

The ticket information is at www.spidernil.com This event is to raise funds and awareness for the Collective. It should be a great night-featuring a short team practice, intrasquad scrimmage, Spider Collective Tumbler and food/drink afterwards.

There is chance for all you Spider fans to get a first look at the squad, which as most likely know, has seven newcomers, including transfers from UConn, Michigan, Dartmouth, Albany and Western Michigan. They will join returnees Delonnie Hunt, Mikel Tyne, Mike Walz, Jason Roche and Collin Tanner.

We look forward to seeing you there!

JOC's Top 20 of the Mooney Era

Have not had too much time to analyze. First thought, my top 20 would move Gonzo up quite a bit higher.

Attention Moderator(s), Tech Issue

The last few days I have noticed that when I come to the site's home page (richmond.rivals.com) it is acting as if I am logged in (even though I'm not), but it has someone else's user name (s). It happened the other day with user name one (it also showed how many messages, their reaction score, etc. It happened again this morning, though with a different user, also not me.

The odd thing is, it doesn't appear when I access any of the individual (football, basketball, etc.) forums.

The Rudy Project

couldn't remember if this proposal for the Power 4 conferences has been posted here or not...according to this story the Rudy Project is being presented to the AD's of the SEC and Big Ten this week

it's a good read if you not familiar with the movements to reform the Power 4 conferences into a league of their own...apparently there is another similar proposal out there as well

as for its impacts on the Spiders one would be no more games scheduled against Power 4 opponents...

sorry to see college football as we've known it go this way, but it seems inevitable...one of the only constants in life and business is change...the NCAA got left behind

RIP Buster

Famed Spiders quarterback Buster O'Brien dies

M&W Tennis

Interesting...Barrick will now be director of tennis in charge of both programs, with Jacob and Emily Dunbar as associate head coaches for both programs. Looks like Wesselink will be sticking around as a volunteer assistant coach for the women, while former Randolph Macon player Grant Sarver has been brought on as an assistant for the men.

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponents Countdown - NC A&T

this Brick House CAA home opener gives the Spiders a chance to help fans forget last year’s CAA home opener…

A&T is another CAA newcomer going through the growing pains of building up their program to the level at which it can compete in the conference…last season was a tough one for the Aggies who struggled to a 1-10, 0-8 CAA start…

Head coach Vincent Brown, who came to A&T from William and Mary, is an impressive sounding man…at CAA Media Day he projected improvement this season built on an offseason spent building a foundation of positive culture on and off the field...Brown believes his team put in the work necessary to eliminate mistakes that lose games!..

With more resources from the University, new coaches and a year of CAA experience, he says his team will be bigger, faster and stronger… when asked what his keys were for more Aggies’ success in 2024 Brown makes it sound pretty simple…start fast…play physical…protect the football…don’t give up explosive plays!

despite the optimism of Brown the CAA Media Day Poll picked A&T to finish 14th in the 16 team conference…they may well be better than 14th, but let’s hope the Spiders stay focused and use this game as another opportunity to improve on the field before the tougher games looming ahead…if we are to battle for the CAA Championship this is a win we gotto have!

enjoy the Countdown!

No help for those in North Carolina

The FEMA budget for housing, food and health care has been spent on illegals, but no budget is left for those in North Carolina. Nice priorities for the Harris Administration.

Of all the utter incompetence.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Wednesday that there is not enough money available for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to meet the needs of the communities affected by Hurricane Helene.

who would have ever believed the Spiders would be playing two of the weakest rated teams in D-1 football in the course of three weeks?...Delaware State and North Carolina A&T both appear near the bottom of every Football Power Rating formula I've seen...

what makes this game interesting is whether, or not, the Spiders can handle being a multi TD favorite versus an outmanned opponent that is really struggling?...we sure didn't handle Delaware State very well...how far have we come since Dover?

Coach Huesman in what must have been some of the most difficult "coachspeak" he ever muttered warned that A&T would be hungry for a win; that they were athletic and reminded fans how tough their defense was on the Spiders last season in Greensboro...he did not mention that the NC A&T defense has given up >40 points in each of their D-1 losses...

Huesman summed it up by warning that the Spiders needed to play A&T with equal, or more intensity...I agree with this but would add execution as well...as a giant favorite versus Delaware State we were all of the things you don't want to be... sloppy, inconsistent and mistake riddled...it almost cost us...we have to have gotten better in the last two weeks!

we should know quickly on Saturday how far we've come...anything less than a dominating win will be a disappointment and leave open the question of have the Spiders gotten better, or are the three consecutive wins just a function of the weak opposition (CSU, DSU and Elon 3-11)!

enjoy the Prologue

A mind is a terrible thing to waste! I forgot to include The Spider Gang predictions. All aboard the Richmond wagon except Ms. Crook who used this risky upset strategy to win the 2023 Predictions Contest Championship.

Here are the NC A&T picks presented in the order of the standings after the Elon game:

The Chief - UR 33-10
Ms. Crook - A&T 34-27
Scooper - UR 38-14
Mr. Electric - UR 34-12
Ms. Diplomat - UR 31-17
Crook - UR 34-27
Ms. Springer - UR 21-7
Satchmo - UR 35-14
The Sheriff - UR 40-20
Ms. Spirit - UR 24-14

2024 Richmond Spiders Football - Opponents Countdown - Elon Phoenix

wow!...the Spiders open their defense of the CAA Championship with what's arguably one of their toughest opponents...I hope Wofford, Charleston Southern and Delaware State prepared us well...

the Phoenix, formerly known as the Fighting Christians, have been awful tough on the Spiders since Coach Huesman arrived...they've won 5 of the last 6 full season games...Richmond has not won at Elon since Danny Rocco was coach!

I expect Elon to be a Championship contender despite the Media Day poll picked them 6th in the 16 team league...Richmond will find out quickly in this one what its going to take to defend our Championship...the Phoenix bring back a lot of talent and experience on both sides of the ball...coach Trisciani believes his team is ready to break through the Championship door after just missing their piece last season...

Spiders fans painfully remember losing last season's CAA opener...as a result we had to run the table with 7 straight wins to get a piece of the Championship...in the 16 team CAA with the crazy scheduling you can just about count on a logjam at the top of the league every year...it might take seven CAA wins again...a win over a competitor on the road would be giant for Richmond...the margin for error in the CAA is very slim...I'm not sure we can win seven in a row again!

enjoy the Countdown!
