Zach Chu to the Pacers

I wonder what a job like that pays for NBA teams - Manager of Analytics and Game Strategy. And I think this type of position would be very helpful in college teams.

Reggie shot a lot of threes, but he sure didn’t hit them at a high clip.

interesting and surprising to see our best five 3 point shooters by percentage last year (admittedly on very limited volume) were:

Golden .500 (9-18)
Kulju .500 (1-2)
Wilson .455 (5-11)
Cayo .400 (2-5)
Grace .389 (14-36)

My junior year one of the sororities threw a basketball tournament for charity in the gym. Zach Chu walked in like McGregor and Mayweather walk into the ring. Then a huge group watched as he and his team (I believe Chandler Diekvoss and John Moran) got matched up against 3 frat bros who had literally just finished chugging something from a huge bottle.

Zach Chu talked so much shit to them. Then he got blocked. Then again. The his pocket picked. The other two kept the score close but Chu looked like what I probably would against VCU. (He also called foul over and over).

Then, when it’s game point and they’re down, what does he do? He calls over and subs in Shawndre who, of course, goes off. They comeback and win the game. What does Zach Chu do after this? Was he humbled? Of course not, he got on the other teams face and talked shit.

Just wanted to share that story, always found it pretty hilarious

I always can respect a smack talker, but you gotta back it up once in a while. Great story, though, ply.

Does this story violate the "Don't be a Jerk" Mooney team rule? We'll have to check in w Spider23 he's the board arbiter of that.

I say no. Plus likely there is some context Ply was not privy to either. But regardless it's a No for me.

Pick up ball stories are generally great. Got many from the carpet gym days. A former poster actually on here threw down a sick dunk on Chad Varga, dunked on him the 2nd day of school. #carpetgym.

It was not the reason Varga transferred - & he ended up having solid career at Pitt - but I think the 2021 version of the story says that's why he left.

I'll have to think on that one. Glad to hear SDJ actually was able to finish off a team in a close game though.........

I've got some pretty good carpet gym and Millhiser memories for sure.
Played pickup game against Russian track team in Auxiliary Gym on the carpet. What a gas! It was either 75 or 76.

Does anyone remember Brian Muldowney from the Tarrant days?
Hahaha, Yes. Good guy. Actually was thinking of him when the Chu story was mentioned. Though Muldowney was not really a big trash talker, but did block his shot at least once in Millhiser. He lived across from me in senior apartments. Did not play his senior year, I think he just wanted to enjoy being a regular student for once. I recall probably the highlight game of his career - Tarrant was quite unhappy with the PG duo of Gerald Jarmon/Eugene Burroughs the first half vs (Army? Navy?). Muldowney got the start for the second half and did a pretty decent job if I recall.

I think in college - analytics could be very useful for in game strategy. Remember - these are not professional athletes, so if you had someone run the analytics on just a few players, where do they take the bulk of their shots, 1-2 dribbles - where does the other team like to start their offensive sets from, etc - you could really use to a good advantage. I think at a pro level - its get blown out of proportion because those guys are so good - they can play around the analytics at some point. Not to mention, they get the same data too - so they know what to expect. But at a college level - I think if used correctly - could have a big impact.
