He had 86 is Freshman year. To break the all time record he needs to average 100 steals his last 3 years. 2/3 of the way through his sophomore year he has 68 and is tied for the lead in the country with 3.2 per game. We have 8 regular season games left and at least one in the A10 tournament. Based on his current steals per game he is expected to get another 29 and if we win at least one game in the A 10 tournament a 100 steals for the season.

He has a long way to go and a lot can happen between now and then, but I don’t think he has peaked yet. If he does not break the all time record and stays healthy he has a very good change of finishing in the top 5 all time, which would require him to average 89 steals his last 3 years. Here is a list of the top 10 all time steal leaders:

John Linehan Providence 385
Eric Murdock Providence 376
Brianté Weber VCU 374
Pepe Sánchez Temple 365
Cookie Belcher Nebraska 353
Kevin Braswell Georgetown 349
Bonzi Wells Ball State 347
Obie Trotter Alabama A&M 346
Gerald Walker San Francisco 344
Johnny Rhodes Maryland 344

Gilyard could make top 5 but has a steep mountain to climb to be #1. Our system doesn't really generate a lot of steals. Look at Weber, Havoc under Smart was a system that was tailor-made for someone who has the aptitude/ability to make steals.

His best chance to make it would be for us to have a new coach with a better defensive philosophy for his final two seasons.

I have expected him to be top 5 since the Georgetown game last year. My hope is #400...

As someone mentioned elsewhere, think of how much attention he'd be getting if we were winning! The media was always all over Weber's jock at VCU when he was racking up the steals. No one mentions a thing about Gilyard's steal totals because we suck.

Gilyard is going to get a lot of media coverage before his college career is over. He is only a sophomore. You make a good point that this story hasn't been covered. I sent an email to John O'Connor of the RTD. Hopefully he covers it.

I already posted one nonsense thread, so I won't start the "Will Gilyard break the ALL Time NCAA Steals record as a Spider." I sure hope he does!

If we get a coach who plays up tempo and likes to press, Gilyard will have a good chance to break the record.

Weber's press coverage increased because he stole on and off the court. Gilyard is way too classy to be a thief so his press coverage will not equal Weber's. That is a good thing.

TJ Cline would be the all-time steals leader if he'd had a bunch more steals. What's your point?

It would sure help to be on a team that played a lot of post-season ball. In all likelihood, we will play 1-2 games in the A10 tourney and be done. A good team might play 5 extra games between going deeper in the conference tournament and getting into the NCAA or NIT....

Wont play enough games to reach that all time mark. Thanks Mooney for no post season during Gilyard's tenure.

Obviously post-season play would help. Gilyard's still going to have the benefit of playing more games.

Seasons were shorter back when Murdock set the record, and Linehan broke it. Murdock's longest season was 32 games, and that included reaching the NIT quarters. Linehan's was 31.

We played 32 games last year, and will have a minimum of 32 this year as well.

What about when he punched the girl? Oh yeah, they hushed that one up.
You are being an idiot. Hushed up, perhaps you didn't bother to watch the video of the alleged incident because you heard it didn't fit your narrative. Mo was sitting at the other end of the bar and never was near the girl. She later admitted after this was introduced that she was dishonest. She was punished by school, but Mo did not seek charges for damages. Weber's incident was not what you think either. Let's not talk about ___, ____, ____... from UR over the last few years as I think dragging a kid through the mud to try and attack a rival is pretty lowbrow. Spiders have enough pieces to win the game tomorrow, that certainly was proven over the last few games. Why not just cheer on your team and not trash folks when you have zero clue of what you speak. Gilyard will total great steal numbers, doubtful he catches the Top 3, if he does then great for him. He works hard. Weber would have blown the record away if he had not blown out his knee 3 years ago verses UR in a the last game that VCU had a share of 1st place.

But, I don't know that he would be playing a bunch of 40-minute games at other schools, so it probably evens out.

Good post. Sorry for some of the uncalled for, childish posts by others on here.

It's not like there aren't similar from "our " side. ( I received my Masters from UR, but heart is all Ram even though I have known many UR players very well and cheered for them when they were not facing VCU) Nobody likes losing this game as it should be. Reality is that the better team does not always win this game. Neither team was good last year, both had games that played well and games that they played terribly. Thursday, trash will be slung even more not matter the outcome. I only defend the individuals, on both sides.
