Perfect example for coach Mooney as to why you don't take the air out of the ball with a lead. I hate it and now you see another big upset GA State, wow!

if you have a nice lead and don't run clock and lose, you would say, why not run some clock. all coaches do this not just CM. kind of similar to the prevent D in football, we complain about it but most coaches do it and no matter which way they do it, slow it down or not and they lose, we will complain but the responsibility is not on our shoulders like it is with a coach.

I know when we're losing, I love to see an opposing kid fire up a shot with 20 seconds left on the clock. you want as many possessions as possible when you're behind.

Simply hate it when we do it so early in 2nd half with a single-digit lead. In this day and age, that's basically no lead, as we've seen time and again this season. While I get that you can actually disrupt the opponent by keeping the pace slower, you still have to be efficient and SCORE. Stops on D end don't mean a thing unless you get enough points. Didn't feel like we slowed it down quite as much last night and wanted to run out in transition as much as possible. Feel that benefits our guys because they love it and fires them and the crowd up. Plus, they're simply good at it!

Agree with ya.

To add to your post. There have been several times when our momentum was hitting on all cylinders, & we slow it down too early. IMHO it can be a momentum buster. Oops... better watch what I say, as I may offend some for second guessing on a basketball forum.

I am not one of the ones ready for a big change, but...

It does seem once we reach 50 we value the clock more than points, no matter how much time is left or how many points our opponent has. That is not a strategy I would use.

On the other hand, I would like to have 3 sets of offensive plays. One for 10 seconds, one for 20, one for 30..

Never understood in football or hoops if you playing well and build up a lead, why you would go away from what got you that lead in the first place.

97, agree. I always thought that the "Prevent" meant prevents your own team from winning!!

understand what you are all saying but almost every coach, football, basketball, does it, so what does that say? it says that when the responsibility is on you, you get more conservative. easy to sit in the stands, in the chair at home and make decisions which have no consequence at all and a lot tougher when you are on the bench where it does. again, if your football coach plays a D which allows a receiver to get behind you for winning score, you will say, why did you do that? cannot win no matter what you do.....

I think we are seeing less and less prevent in recent years. Too many teams have been burnt doing it. The best coaches vary things up, so you never know what they are going to do.

No one says not to run down the clock if you've got a double-digit lead and just 3 or 4 min left. But more important than slowing the pace and # of possessions is the offensive efficiency. if you continue to score, even if it's getting to FT line, then you win. Also why I like how we're much better in making shots down low than just a few years ago. If you've only got a single-digit lead, all I see is teams losing leads so I call it the "I don't want to win big" strategy. You have to keep scoring or the equalizer 3-pters will bite you.

Heresy! I have heard it implied here many times that the Coach and his decision-making have very little to do with the success of the team!
