I haven't seen enough out of JJ to think he's markedly better than any of the new guys.
Presuming Jacob is healthy enough to get back at point, I think I'd lean toward playing either Andre or Sal. I believe Sal played more of a swing/SF role in HS, so maybe he fits well there. Not sure if his 3 ball is that good but frankly, none of the options are going to rate highly on this compared to Nick.

I would like to see Sal, Cayo and Golden in at same time giving us some height and all three can go to rim and if
Jake Gilyard still out, use Andre at PG and JW at the #2. Yates, JJ and Gates can come off the bench for the 3-5 position.
What is status on Verbinskys? He is dressed out but wonder if he is in shape.

Who knows Spiderman maybe they would allow these guys to attack cause what do we have to lose. Tell me how better a shooter is JJ or Yates or Gates. JJ is only one we have really seen shoot any and he misses a lot more than he makes. I am looking at the defensive side of things and quickness also. Your probably right but I don't think we have one five better than the other.

Sman, I did try to give Mooney the benefit of the doubt to start the season. I like the players. I like the True Fans. But, I have seen little from Mooney to change my opinion. We all knew we were a twisted ankle from disaster to start the season, and unfortunately much worse has occurred. I really hope we can give Gilyard time to get healthy too.

And they have two players that I don't consider to be quite quick enough to be plus defenders, but they gave up very very few layups and uncontested shots. That is coaching. I have seen many discussions around scheme, but to me it is holding players accountable and emphasis or lack there of.

It's Mooney, so you know he is going with Yates/JJ combo for these minutes, instead of playing the young kids who MIGHT have potential to help the team long term.
Gustavson has the ability as demonstrated in the Hampton debacle. Showed speed and very fluid and comfortable on the court, but imagine JJ will get the start.
@spiderman this is a general question for everyone...not trying to pick on you: If Mooney wants to run an offensive system with so many guys spreading the floor around the perimeter why do we have so many "awful perimeter shooters" on the roster? Again, not picking on you or the players (Mooney is the recruiter) but we seem to be lacking in shooting and athleticism.
Woj, gilyard, and Sherrod are all very good outside shooters. Dre and Sal are undetermined. Cayo and Grant are awful. JJ is below average but streaky. Yates is supposedly good but I’d put him with JJ at best now. That’s 33% of the roster (at least players that play that aren’t a walk on) who are very good outside shooters. That’s not terrible, though I agree that with Mooney’s system it should be higher.
Hardt said today that they’ll be applying for a medical hardship for Nick, so he should be able to preserve the year. His comment was along the lines of it being a silver lining to this type of injury this early is the ability to get a medical redshirt.
I believe Regular redshirts didn’t change in basketball only football.
Medical redshirt mean you can only play in the first 9 or 10 games, unless we play more than 36 games...
as Nathan said we do have some good shooters. at our level (and I know some here hate to hear "our level" but it's reality), it's very difficult to land guys that have everything ... size, shooting ability and athleticism. pretty much everyone on our roster has a flaw of some degree in one of those 3 categories.
so we balance our lineup. on this board we often say that this system needs 5 shooters. it doesn't. we're scoring plenty when healthy. our problems are almost entirely on the defensive end.
Asking more about like with the new football rules can a freshman play so many minutes without losing his redshirt? We may have a good reason to hold a few players out.
Sherod qualifies for a medical redshirt, I think that has been answered. Whether he serves the remaining 2 years here is entirely different question. We thought we had roster turnover last year when 5 players left the program with eligibility remaining. I would expect a similar "attrition" rate this year.
In my opinion, if we move quickly and decisively to sack CM soon, and bring a quality coach on board for next season, we may not have that attrition, and in fact we may pick up a good recruit or two.
Of course, we will never do that. We will all have to endure the Bataan Death March that is our men's basketball program at the moment until March or April.
Keef, I agree with you mostly. Unfortunately even if we sack Mooney today, we are not hiring a permanent coach at this time in the season, so I think we are waiting until at least mid March to work on retaining players. I don't think we can really have a permanent coach in place until mid March to April. Unless Hardt is going to go way outside the box, like Nancy or a Jeff Van Gundy type.
I would have zero issues with either Jones or Jenkins as interim coach, while the AD focuses maximum attention on identifying and securing the services of new coach, which would be much better than keeping Mooney in place. Let's face it, this season is toast no matter who is at the helm.

I still content firing him now would mostly if not completely remove any expectations and pressure on the players to win now and take all the negativity out of the environment. I have no problem and would be supportive watching a bunch of underclassmen develop under an interim coach, regardless of wins or losses.
I agree. My offer to buy back my season tickets still stands until the Old Dominion game but expires after that.
you guys think a kid and his parents develop a relationship with and sign with a coach, then 6 games into their first season think "whew, thank goodness that guy's finally gone. now I can play for his caddy ... who's never been a head coach before"?
I know you all want Mooney gone yesterday, but there's no way to rationalize that losing your coach a month into your freshman season takes the pressure off and will help the freshmen get better.
