We need more from Grant

All he done is be the only sophomore in division one to average 18 points and 7 rebounds and 2 A10 Co- player of the week awards the past month. Come on Grant let's pick it up!

He’s having a great offensive season. Great kid as well. I’d trade all the rookie of the year, all conference, and other accolades the past 8 years for a few trips to the NCAA’s and a well built roster though. I’ll go back to sipping my hatorade now.

Nonsense UR80. GG can be a scoring machine in games. Since Mooney loves using the off/def sub pattern way before most coaches do, maybe Mooney can incorporate it with GG right from the start of the game. Not being that's he's a defensive liability, more so to keep him fresh for what he does best. ;)

I know your just being a thorn in all of our sides with these posts, but these posts also display your lack of knowledge of the game or possibly how close you actually watch the game. Grant is having a great offensive year putting up some pretty big numbers, but he also has some pretty big holes in his game on defense, which don't show up as much when you just look up stats. But it is pretty clear when you watch him play. Watch how many points he gives up on uncontested lay-ups, it is not a small number.

So you have to balance that into the equation. Not saying Grant is not having a good year, but you have to balance out both ends of the court and just like Sherod, who is also a great scorer, Grant isn't really bringing it on defense.

I still believe his tentative defense is a result of not wanting to foul out. We have no legitimate backup if he does. Grace and Souley will improve but aren't there yet. (Souley may never be a post player)

Watching the UVA game last night when they are swapping 6'9" + post players regularly with not a lot of loss in effectiveness. One fouls out, so what?

Grace is not Grant but he's shown sufficient capability to come in give some minutes. I think if Grant fouls out, you just end up going with a more perimeter based offense.

This is of course all easy for me to say but if I'm coaching, I need Grant to be more of an internal presence on D than he is and I'd be willing to risk him fouling out if so.

The other option is to try and keep the ball out of the lane by playing a tight zone defense. That way it would be more difficult for the opponent to drive the ball to the basket. If the ball is in the paint less you protect Grant from fouls and from playing defense on the block, which is the weakest part of his game.

This post is just as effective without the section that I quoted.

All of us can get better about this. Let's make sure we stay civil on this board.

After watching the UVA vs Va Tech game, I would take Grant over either teams starting center.

You get 5 fouls in a game, I don't know why our coach is so hesitant to have Grant play defense. Grace seems like he can walk and chew gum at the same time.

Grant will become a complete player under our new coach. He's shown a good offensive sense for the most part, though he needs to learn how to dunk. He's 6-10. No need to putz around trying layups and kissing some, as he did against Rhody, when you can just slam it home.

Defensively, whether he's getting coached not to play defense or just on his own is tentative, he has a lot of room for improvement. I don't sense it getting better under this staff. The net impact of him scoring 20 points a game but allowing a bunch of easy points inside on the other end, obviously, is a wash sometimes.

Sure and if the game was walking and chewing gum you'd be correct. Grace does not have the offensive abilities (yet) that Grant provides.

That is laughable. Any big man for UVa is much better than grant all around because they actually play defense and are more skilled and athletic. And Blackshear from Tech is a far better shooter and also better all round. Grant couldn't guard my grandmother in the paint.

I think a grant is great, I’m happy he is being recognized by the A10 for his excellence so far this season. and I think we all project him to continue to improve. However, he’s not quite there yet (which is natural for a sophomore).

He still needs work defensively (as mentioned above), he needs to improve at both his shot selection and finishing (his shooting percentage is 106th in the Nation, which is solid, but to be truly elite, there’s room for improvement), and I think he needs to get better passing out of the double team (as he is continually seeing more of them) amongst others improvements. No player is ever completely done improving.

I think and hope he will continue to improve, and I’m very thankful he’s on our team. But for the team and him personally to reach the next level, yes, I do believe we need more from Grant.

Where did you get this stat? I've already found 2 other sophomores and I haven't had to look hard. Oddly, he's listed as a Jr. on NCAA.com, so no telling what other RS-SOs they have listed incorrectly.

It came from our athletic department.

Game day preview email.
"Only Sophomore in D-I, 1 of only 5 underclasmen"...

Edit: I tried to verify the claim at NCAA.com

Using their class designation I only found 3 Freshman, no Sophomores.
Zion Williamson, Duke
Lamine Diane, CSUN
Jayden Gardner, ECU

But that is ignoring any R-So listed as Jr...

Who are the 2 Sophomores that you found at 18.0/7.0?

I probably screwed up, because I was scanning for Sophomores and blew by Grant (because he's not listed as a sophomore) on one of the lists. Daniel Gafford was one, and the stats hadn't been updated for his 10 point performance last night. Don't know how we'd verify on NCAA because we don't know the redshirt status.

Anyway, GG is a great offensive player and one of the best big men we've had.

He's not having a very good game. How and why does he have so many of his shots blocked?

As good as Grant can be sometimes. He could be so much better. He plays way to soft around the basket, he misses and gets his shot blocked way to much. He is often fading away and not going strong to the basket. Would love to see him go strong to the basket and just throw it down and for his defense well he has a long way to go there.

Better coaching would help make those adjustments.
