vs George Mason (RICH -13) - Game Predictions?

There was a ton of O for D substitution last night. I don't think it really worked either way...our O was stagnant and our D didn't prevent buckets.

I'd be willing to bet that outside of our big three, the other guys didn't get sustained minutes. Instead of playing for 6-7 minutes guys are playing for only 2 straight minutes. Hard to get in the flow that way. This was a mooney criticism early in his tenure he'd gotten better at. Might be regressing.

I first noticed the offense-defense subs at the GW game. I've never thought this worked really well for us. I get last night, he was protecting TJ with 4 fouls but usually what ends up happening is that we play more offensive possessions with our defensive subs than vice versa because CM likes to call timeout after made shots. And when you use this strategy when you are down and need to score, that to me, is not what you want to happen.

I thought last night at the 4 minute mark down by 9 or, that the only chance we had to win the game was to hope Marshall would get hot from 3 and hit a couple in succession. He didn't get hot but it is tougher for a rhythm shooter like him to establish rhythm when he is being yanked out of the game every possession.

Is there any way to quantify how good DT and TD are at playing defense as opposed to the other players. Fan2011 could use your help here.

Davidson game proved it was a myth to me. When some no name took DT to the hoop over and over and over for 30+ points in our building.

Peyton Aldridge had offers from us, Creighton, Dayton, BC, and just about the entire MAC.

I certainly remember wanting him, but I don't think we were ever on his short list.

We made him look like Larry Bird

Although I agree him getting more than 20 much less 30 was ridiculous...

Aldridge is a perfect example of a guy we recruited but couldn't land who could be really helping us now. First, he is an ideal 4 for CM system, high basketball IQ, can score from everywhere.

If we could of landed a player or 2 like Aldridge over the past couple of years instead of some of the reaches we ended up signing, we wouldn't be where we are now.

Whichever assistant was the lead on the recruitment of guys like Diekvoss and Smithen, that guy needs to be cut loose this year. He should have been cut loose last year. I think this year's class is a result of Mooney getting more personally involved in the recruiting process, which is good, but also means he had to get more involved because he can't trust his assistants to do that job.

97, you may have already gotten your wish on this. Brunt was our primary recruiter the last several years I believe.

I don't necessarily feel like we are bad evaluators of talent, but we aren't great at hitting the intersection of talent and ability to close guys. Obviously it's competitive out there, just because we want a guy doesn't mean he wants us (please refer to long list of Andrew White-esque players who chose alternate programs than UR).

Pardon the question, but what other schools were going after buck, sherod, and golden?

Sherod: Bonnies, W. Kentucky, Bucknell, Drexel, Missouri State, Texas Tech, App State, ECU, Va. Tech, Marshall, Rice, William & Mary - VCU & Va. interest no offer...

Buckingham: Rice, Va Tech, RI, ODU, VCU, Longwood, Cincinnati, Maryland, Va., Radford

Interesting Note: I noticed both Sherod & Buck moving up in the SG ranks.

Good to know, rankings will probably settle after the season... I am excited for these guys too, don't get me wrong, but there aren't a whole lot of big time schools on either list. Buck with Cincy, MD, UVA is good.

Actually Peyton Aldridge is a consistently good player, especially for a sophomore. I wish UR had him, although wr70beh is likely correct - Mooney would have him sitting on the bench.
Lol, you know my point is that we made Aldridge look like an all American on our home floor. Sad to see.

Josh Duinker. Wasted talent, or not talented enough to play at this level? I hate to bring his name up, but there is your recruiting barometer. Ask yourself if the Dunk would be starting on this year's team or picking the splinters out of his butt after the games every night? For me a classic case of Mooney trying to fit a player to his system instead of working with the player's talents. Now take a look at MW. He could be the second coming of Dunkier except he has DT in front of him instead of Harper and the Bumbler(post injury) Dan Geriot. DT is a senior, so at least MW won't have to sit behind him next year as well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. Give Mooney Shaqille O Neal and he would have him riding the pine because he wouldn't learn to shoot the 3 or pass from the high post. Rebounds, we don't need any stinking rebounds! You fellas talk about recruiting. Ask yourself why would a quality big man come to UR anyway? Mooney would whitewash their skills and eliminate what they need to make it at the next level.

I quit watching the games 2 or 3 years ago. I follow through these boards. Good thing because sadly, nothing has changed. It is so much more enjoyable that way.

While I'm at it I might as well get it off my chest. I have never gotten over Mooney's game plan for the Kansas S16 game. He had his deepest, most athletic squad ever and he reverts back to full blown Princeton mode. Never gave his team a chance to compete. Showed them that he had no confidence in them. The Kansas players never had to play defense for longer that 5 or 10 seconds. Never had to hustle back up the court in transition defense. They could just turn around, walk back and set up their defense. Morningstar hit all of his 3's from the same spot. No adjustments whatsoever. The worst part is Mooney showed the nation exactly what not to do against KU. So the crosstown rival had some good film to look at and they took advantage of it. I thought Mooney would "learn on the job" and evolve but he has proven me wrong.

I feel so much better after getting that off my chest.

Octo......Not sure if you are a fan or a protester. Probably neither but hopefully you still support UR some other way. If so then good on ya.

Sherod was blowing up when he committed. He had a couple BCS offers but interest was definitely picking up. You can't argue with Buckingham's offers although I think UVA and MD had cooled a bit due to his knee injury concerns last year.

I used to be a season ticket holder. Had them through some of the Tarrant years up through Mooney's time. I wanted so much for him to be successful. I liked everything about him except for his lack of coaching experience and his coaching philosophies. I figured he would learn and morph on the job into a really good coach. The only real changes that took place is that he started getting smaller and smaller guards. He still played a defense that relied on length but with the exception of the s16 year his teams were getting smaller and smaller. When he would sub, he would go even smaller. He took great pride in his 3 point defense which sent the bigs out on the perimeter quite a bit. I got tired of watching Anderson, Brothers, Lindsay and the rest of them struggle badly to defend the middle and get pounded into submission on the glass. The other teams couldn't hit a 3, but they would win the game in the paint. On the offensive end, at least when he was running the PO they used the whole floor. Then his offense morphed into high ball screens and shots either behind the 3 line or right at the rim. No mid range offense anymore. In his defense, that is where basketball is headed so a lot of teams are doing it as well. Well, the other teams would go zone and you beat a zone with shots from the gaps and seams where they are available. Not Mooney, though still bombing away from 3 and it was either feast or famine. This despite having a team full of "shooters." No shots from the free throw line to open up that zone. Just bombs away! The other teams would just pack it in even more. Finally, I got tired of hearing about depth and experience issues year, after year, after year despite having 13 scholarships available. If you are not going to play your bench then don't whine about it. The favoritism among players was irritating as well. That quick hook for certain players no matter how they were playing was confusing.

The sad part was that it wasn't even about wins and losses. I just can't watch his teams play. It is finesse all the way. Even during the Dooley years the teams played tough. Ol Jer won in the Phog! Enough said. You have to look up at the scoreboard to see who is winning because unless the other team is really bad, it looks like UR is losing every game. I feel so sorry for his players. I think after 2-3 years some of them don't believe in his system. That is why you see the dropoff. Maybe that is what is happening this year. Who can blame them? I don't believe in it either. One other thing, usually a sign of overall good recruiting is when you see lower classmen overtaking the upper classmen for starting spots. Think back through the years and you will find an upper classman that lost his spot to an under classman. It didn't happen much in Mooney's tenure while I was following them. People always talk about Mooney hanging his career on KA's back. If not for FCM's timely barrage he wouldn't have beat Vandy either. This despite his constant yanking of FCM every time he even breathed wrong.

I gave up my tickets and quit watching. Now I am a fan without a team. This is a good thing because one of my neighbors is a big VCU fan. As we like to say, " nobody can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory like Mooney." That is sad. I still want him to succeed, but he has to change.

That is a long one. I got bored reading it.

Octopod I think we have all endured all the things you speak of and of course still do. I guess I'm just not smart enough to give up. It has been a long time (4/5 years) since we achieved the ultimate goal of NCAAs I'll admit. But when I have devoted so many years to my team I can't bring myself to turn my back and walk away.
