Villanova in game thread

In his post game comments coach said he was very disappointed with the team. He all but said the team should have won the game.

Seemed to me he basically called them out -- time to man up

Soft D, no completions to TE, another heart breaking loss. Why the heck do
we continue a 3 man rush when with 4 man we were putting pressure on QB.
I am tired of announcers for both teams or media commentators referring to not
understanding why we play off the receivers.

Stonewall, IMO he isn't hard enough on this team. That's why their season is falling apart.

He was soft when they barely beat Albany. Even told them to celebrate the win in the locker room when they were getting on each other about playing so poorly in the 2nd half.

Right now, the way they are playing, they have no chance to beat Bill and Gary next week. 7-4 is gonna be a disappointing end to the season.

What's the tiebreaker looking like?

I think we want JMU to win next week against Villanova. In that case we would be first in a three way tie with JMU and W&M.

Not sure how the tiebreaker would play out if it was a three way tie with us, W&M, and Villanova though

We were the better team but kept them in the game with turnovers and bad special teams (again). Unfortunate. Hopefully we respond with the playoffs on the line.

Not sure about the tie breaker, but if we win we are in. That is really all that matters.

If JMU beats Villanova and we beat W&M, we win the league.

If Villanova beats JMU and we beat W&M, we all would be 1-1 against each other. I assume the next tiebreaker is record against the next team, which would be JMU. We all would have beaten JMU. So the next team would either be Towson or UNH, or possibly both. I don't think there's any way we would win a tiebreaker in those scenarios, because we lost to UNH and didn't play Towson. W&M played and beat both of them and would have the advantage over us either way.

We would be co-champions with the other two but would get the auto bid.

Do you think McDonnell or Talley have any doubt they can finish a gw drive against our prevent defense?

At least Rocco has owned W&M so far.

The D played great today. TOs were the difference this week and last. We were the better team both weeks barring TOs. Our D did not cost us either of the last two games.

Agree with KE. Special teams killed us today. We are due a complete game!

I was there and we were the better team no doubt, but we weren't the better coached team for sure.

The prevent thing totally befuddles me. We were successful all day long when we could get pressure. None of that pressure came rushing three men. Freshman quarterback with little experience in a pressure situation under pressure seems to be what we'd want. Yet when it counts, we rushed three (coupled with soft corners) again and again.

And to boot, the time on the clock to me says blitz more as well. With like just over 2 minutes, why not sell out on blitz - - yeah you might get beat and give up the score, but you also might get a big play that wins, but if you give up the big play and the touchdown, at least you have 2 minutes and 2 timeouts to get back down the field. Laying back, you might stop 'em and you might get beat, but you'll for sure be out of time if you do get beat (and history seems to say (loudly!) that rushing three is gonna get you beat!

D was fine, but can't say they were good when they give up a drive for a game winning TD. Offense wasn't so good and special teams were bad!

You're all right and all wrong. It's a team game. One less turnover by the offense in the red zone we win. One more stop by the defense at game's end we win. Make the field goal instead of hitting the upright we win. I'm personally bothered more by the defense because it's as much a philosophical issue as execution. Turnovers and missed field goals can be corrected with current coaching staff. I'm not so sure that our defensive efficiency will ever equal our offensive efficiency. I really miss Heuseman's and Reid's defense.

TOs were the difference last week and this. Without them we win both games handily regardless of how many we rush or how soft we play on the corners.

do the same thing all the time and the other team knows how to plan against you -- mix it up and they are at least hesitating

Kyle may have broken the record for turn overs in three games. Special teams killed us again. We were the better team and lost. Rocco needs to prove he can win a big game. Tough weekend to be a spider.

Amen on tough weekend to be a Spider, but I did get a new granddaughter this week and one of my sons ran his first marathon today so keeping it in perspective, all is well. No TOs next week and we win...barely.

Nova highlights which show our TO's.

3TO's- 2 by KL(pick on VU 5,fumble on VU 9)as we were in the red zone.Collins' TO deep(UR 14) in our territory led to Nova TD.We gave away 14 pts and we gave them 7 pts.A 21 point swing.

If Nova beats JMU next week and we lose to WM we are out at 7-4.

If we beat WM we get AQ.

I think I'm glad this one wasn't on tv. Certainly sounds like we let another one get away. Hopefully we can pull it together next week.

Carolina, we all want to know. Sent email with it to Spider Sportsline and hopefully Bob will ask Coach Rocco on Tuesday. If not, someone in attendance should. We've seen this defensive approach for years now, and it rarely works out for us.

TO's always hurt, but especially ones we've had in red zone last 2 games. This late in season, there's lots of film on us for teams to study. Maybe we need to be less predictable in play calls if passing or maybe just pound the ball more inside 10. Guess on the earlier win streak, we all forgot that Lauretta is really a FR in actual game experience. Also, why not go for 2 pt conversion once in a while? Couldn't be worse than missing PAT today.

Pat was blocked, no idea how Until that point I think we had made all our pats this season. Going for 1 At the point of game was correct call. We have gone for 2 several times this season and been successful.

We are leaking oil at this point for 3 primary reasons and I only view one of them as coaching related:

1- we are turning the ball over way too much in the passing game after not having done it earlier in the season. After the season, Kyle's numbers will still look pretty good for a sophomore signal call but he's been up and down lately to say the least. He's knows it and wants to be better and will be better.

2- We are banged up in several key spots on defense. 96 was one of best players and is probably done for the year. We are down to a 4th or 5th CB starting due to injury. Our defense is playing incredibly hard. Giving up 21 should have been enough to win yesterday.

3- Our special teams still stink.

I couldn't agree more. That's one reason why I always talk about using trick plays once in a while. Even if they don't work, at least our future opponents have to plan and practice for them, and they will hesitate in certain situations. Other than a surprise onside kick against JMU, and a two point conversion, we have not tried a single gimmick play. No fake fg or punt, no flee-flicker, no halfback option pass, nothing. Hell, our backup qb doesn't even throw the ball, when Broadus comes in, everyone knows it's a run. I still remember in the national championship game when our fullback Crone passed to our quarterback Ward for the go ahead touchdown. And the semifinal game before that when Ward threw the flee-flicker touchdown pass to snatch a victory from the jaws of defeat.

We are way too predictable on offense and defense, and that's on the coaching.

BTW this game was strangely similar to the 2009 game against Villanova. Game was tied 14-14 late, we scored and missed the extra point. Nova drove down the field with us in soft coverage, and scored the touchdown pass on 4th down. Kicked the point, 21-20, and that ended our 17 game win streak. Deja-vu all over again

Rick I was just about to post that. Way too similar. Hopefully we follow with a 09 W&M performance as well (no matter how ugly that was)

In August, never thought UR would , at worst, go 7-4. That said, playing poorly at end against teams could have beat. As others said, Trott's defensive scheme at end of close games never makes the big stop. And as everyone but Rocco realizes, special teams are miserable. Win or lose, Spiders need coaching changes, particularly on special (not so special teams). Legg must go and DR has got to make the move.
