UVA is overrated

What other coach in the state of Virginia has coached his team to the National Championship in Division 1 other than Tony Bennett at UVA? Usually when a team is defending National Champions the rating services rank them higher the following year than they would have been otherwise. And fortunately although UVA and Virginia Tech refuse to play the Spiders, Loyola Chicago was willing to play us.

UVa was overrated this year. So was the entire ACC. The Pac-12 was dissed by everyone as being a cut below and is now 6-0 in the tournament despite not having anyone seeded higher than 5th.

Bennett is a an outstanding coach and I'd love to have him at UR, but let's be honest, without a missed double-dribble call Texas Tech wins the title. And he's also the only coach of a No. 1 seed to lose a 1-16 game (by 20 points, I might add). He has a long list of head-scratching losses, like last night. Ohio took 5th place in the MAC.

All coaches have flaws. But Dick Tarrant, not Tony Bennett, is the best coach in the commonwealth in the last 40 years.

Tarrant and Beilein are great - our history is incredible. Yes the ACC/UVA down this season, but Tony Bennett has a national championship, 2 other elite 8 appearances, won the ACC regular season 5 of last 8 years and won 2 ACC tourneys in same span - and you think another coach in our Commonwealth can compare to that? Laughable dude

Yes absolutely. The job Tarrant did with his recruits is miles above what Bennet has done with his elite recruits. Tarrant could win as a 15 seed. Bennett has trouble beating a 16 seed. And a 13 seed.

I don't think there needs to be a "best." Tarrant was an incredible coach. But damn, I mean Bennett won a national championship! And has won a top-3 league in America, regular season and tournament, a bunch of times. Pretty hard for me to argue against that.

The NCAAs largely are a crapshoot. Lots can go wrong in one game. But when you are consistently winning your league over a 16- or 18-game schedule, tough to overlook that.

I will always give Tarrant his due. He is our best coach and his wins in the NCAA tourney are a source of great pride. I loved telling my kids this weekend that UR was the first 2 seed to beat a 15 after ORU beat tO$U.

But there is no comparison here. Bennett rebuilt a dead ACC program with his bare hands - just like Tarrant would do - and has sustained success against UNC, Duke and the rest of the ACC. We can cherry pick losses all we want - but it’s incredible what Bennett has built at UVA. It’s certainly ok for me to admit - as a spider alum - that Tarrant is not the best coach in the state over past 40 years

To me it’s simple. If you lose to a 16 seed you can never be considered a great coach. Just can’t. I know others don’t use that metric, but for me a great coach would NEVER lose that game. And that’s because no great coach has ever lost that game

UVA did lose its best player right before that game. Of course they still should have won, but it was a pretty major loss. Still, just one game.

What about all the “great” coaches who never played a 16 seed?

I’d question that. UVA had a lot of success nationally, Sampson, Stith, even the ivaroni team that won the Acc tourney they had some national history. Before Tarrant we were a nobody

Curious if u think Boeheim is a great coach. Hall of Famer. But he was 1st coach to ever lose as a 2 seed. To our Spiders of course. But u could have easily extended this “simple” rule to 1 and 2 seeds at that point in time too. It had never happened. There is always a first.

I’ll be honest I have been enjoying a large volume of alcoholic beverages today during the games. I just kind of wanted to start something. Hell, I don’t even know how good Tarrant was, he had retired the year before I was born. I just haven’t seen the Spiders ever play in the tourney so I’m trying to pretend the glory days that I never experienced were even more glorious to make up for this drought

Sampson would have never played a college game today.

I’ve got no idea - different era and landscape of college athletics but no way am I trying to devalue Tarrant and what he accomplished. I think Dick Tarrant however tips his cap to Tony Bennett and what TB has now accomplished.

I have never really been a big UVA fan, or Tech fan for that matter, but Bennett is a GOAT, man you have to give his due. The run he has had in the ACC dominating K and Roy - who do seem to be slipping - is crazy. But ACC is still loaded and has another top 10 coach IMO at Louisville in Mack. UVA's slow pace is going to produce some upsets, but it is crazy how successful he has been, and really only guy to have success at WSU too. LOL at trying to blame a travel call. Refs are crazy bad and miss 20 calls per game badly both ways. I saw Texas Tech absolutely butcher Arkansas on about 5 straight possessions last night, with no call and touch calls on the other end. Then Arkansas seemed to get some generous calls at the end. I used to be worse than Ply on the refs, but trying to knock down Bennett for one call is laughable.

Tarrant is the Richmond GOAT. It is going to take someone after Mooney to get in that picture - so Tarrant is safe for the forseeable future.

George Raveling was very successful at Wazzu. Kelvin Sampson had some success too.

Bennett is an outstanding coach. So was Dick Tarrant. I'd have loved to see what he could have done at an ACC school, with far more resources than he had at UR.
