What type of defense does Elon run? That is an odd listing...

odd or not they ran 4-3 v JMU.They’ll bring an LB up on short yardage.Their DBs played much more zone than not.

I think our 7 ,11,15,88 will be able to work very well underneath that zone.

Richmond Heads To Elon For First Of Two Meetings
View All 2021 Richmond vs Elon
Mar 11, 2021Roger Brown

Elon will have at least one advantage over Richmond entering Saturday’s Colonial Athletic Association matchup at Elon’s Rhodes Stadium: Elon has played three games, and Richmond has played one.
“You get better at football by playing football,” Elon coach Tony Trisciani said. “I do feel like we’re starting to come together on both sides of the ball.”

Elon has suffered back-to-back losses against Gardner-Webb (42-20) and James Madison (20-17) since opening its season with a 26-23 victory over Davidson. Richmond kicked off its spring season with a 21-14 win against William & Mary last Saturday.

“We made mistakes (on defense), but we played fast,” Richmond coach Russ Heusman said. “We played physically. We can run on defense. We have a lot of team speed there.”

Injuries at quarterback have been the storyline for Elon this season. The Phoenix lost starting quarterback Davis Cheek -- a three-year starter -- to a foot injury before the season began, and then No. 2 QB Joey Baughman sustained a knee injury that will keep him off the field for the remainder of the spring season.

True freshman JR Martin was Elon’s starting quarterback for last Saturday’s loss to James Madison. Martin completed 12 of 26 passes for 129 yards with one TD and one interception in the loss.”

This is crazy given kickoff is 1pm and a 3 hour bus ride:

JOC RTD 3/12/21

NOTES: “ … The Spiders will leave Richmond Saturday morning, stop on the way to Elon to eat, play the game, eat at Elon, and then return to Richmond Saturday night...”

So, what was the breakfast stop today? Did we have to use the Bojangles coupons since MBB has drained the athletic department budget?

Great start, marched right down the field to the Promised Land on Possession #1. 11 plays, 67 yards

Don't want to jinx it, but we look pretty good. 21-7. Now's the time to intensify - two-score leads have been a weakness. Shut them down and make it a 3-score game.

I can’t figure out yet if we corrected a bunch of mistakes from last week, or if Elon is just sluggish and having a bad day. Still early but looks promising

I’m going to temper expectations for this spring deal. Lots of Fr and Soph seeing the field, so I’ll take that anytime

And we give up a long KO return, and a long TD pass on the first play. That just can't happen. If they're gonna score, have to make them burn some clock. 31-14, 12:52 to go. Time for a long drive to kill the clock.

Three and out, punt, and Elon QB gains 24 on first down. Let's play some D, one stop probably wins this game. And we get the stop, an interception by Xavier Marshall. 9:49 left and we're driving.

Line play on both sides of ball appears much better this year. Also, marked reduction in brain dead penalties. TO margin much improved. Go Spiders! Giving me faith and hope for better days than last couple of years.

First Place!

Nice win. Other than special teams errors, solid all around.

Coaches love to win with errors. Gives them something to jaw about.:D

Didn’t get a chance to listen today but love just checking in now to see a decisive margin of victory. Feels like it has been way too long since we had some comfortable in conference wins. Feeling like some legitimate reasons for optimism around spider football (I know - it’s like nfl preseason...but it’s better to win than lose)

These aren't preseason games, I don't think. Teams are playing their best guys, and playing to win.

After the trainwreck of basketball, beating our longtime rival and then beating a solid program like Elon is reason to get excited. Lord knows we need a reason!
