We have at least two spots to fill for next year, and there is barely a mention of us with anyone we actually have a decent chance to land. What are we doing here? Are we actively recruiting anyone of note, or are we going to sign two late D3 guys, hype them, keep them on the roster for a year and then watch them transfer to their local JCs next spring? Or hit up the grad transfer market that has treated us so well?

Saving them both for Bryce.

In seriousness, the last recruit we offered was Sy Chatman a few weeks ago. He has some decent offers, UNI and UMass among others. Other than that I am not sure what the plan is.

I have been very high on man recruits in the past, only to get burned.

1) Bryce Golden
2) Sy Chatman

In reality, we go out and get:
1) Grad Transfer Kwesi/JMA v3.0
2) Someone who plays 5 minutes combined over next two years and transfers to D2.
I think EL is becoming too adept at this after watching for 13 years.

Yeah, he's not coming here, so we are going to be fishing in the shallow ponds again, I fear. We already have four "new" players becoming active next year, so these two additional ones better give us something or else we're in the same boat again.

Actually not a bad idea. He visited us, as I recall?

Also interesting that High Point has higher standards than we do (maybe that's why it's not called Low Point?). Cherry won four consecutive regular season titles there, then finished 5th last year and 5th this year and is done. Never won the conference tourney, so he never made an NCAA. He had an overall winning percentage in 9 years of 52%. Sound familiar?

Why would another big man want to come here? CM has obviously demonstrated the past two years he'd rather start 4 guards than a normal rotation. We have one forward who plays, one gives them a breather for 5 minutes a game, or we go totally small when Grant isn't in. Does anyone think Mooney will actually change the rotation next year?

I mean, he was on the all-conference Rookie team. Had a nice freshman year, it seems. We wanted the kid, so if he sucks, that's another strike against Mooney's recruiting. He seems decent enough though.

Ya, my comment was tongue in cheek, cherry picking the stuff he wasn't as good at. Good number of steals for a big man.

One issue is we need big man help next year, and he'd have to sit out. Never mind that there's no evidence he's interested in transferring, much less to the Spiders.

Time to go back to the Hans Brace list and see who else is out there who shouldn't/won't come here! :(

How about this scenario for High Point...Memphis fires Tubby to bring in Penny Hardaway, and Qubien lays out the cash to bring Tubby back to his alma mater?

Wow, I had no idea Tubby went to High Point, less of an idea that High Point even existed that long ago.

One of his seasons there he played under Barnett, and a few years later is when they linked up again at VCU.

Or since Broad Street "loves" former assistants so much - they fire Rhoades and bring Tubby onboard........................

Having served as head coach at 6 other schools he would be one of most "traveled" coaches.............

Past history suggests it will be one of each. (1) A late signee that will transfer to a local Juco in a year and (2) a non productive grad transfer that will rob Phoenix Ford of minutes next season.

I agree Bryce G is a lottery pick long shot. I certainly don't think it'll happen. but with 2 spots open, we'd be crazy not to hold one now just in case.
I'm hoping for Sy with the 2nd one.

Bingo. This is our winner. This is what we do with the spring signing period and grad transfers. I can't wait to hear about Rob Jones bragging around town about his latest grad transfer signee, who will score less than 20 points in Spider career.

I thought we had 4 spots for next year (Kirby, Friendshuh, JMA, Stansbury), and as of today they've only filled one (Sal)?

So still 3 spots to fill, or am I missing a commitment?

Yeah, we threw Kirby on scholarship for 2 years because Mooney couldn't even recruit 13 dudes to play on scholarship. Rob Jones bailed him out last year with his clutch signing of JMA though. That was a most effective use of that scholarship.

Don't have any information on this, but Wyatt Walker 6'9" 240 pounds is a player in whom the Spiders had interest out of high school. He signed with Samford, did quite well (12.9 points, 9.7 rebounds), then was injured and missed much of this year. While the Spiders did not offer him out of high school, I seem to recall that he had interest in UR. Now he is transferring, can play immediately, and has two years of eligibility remaining. Illinois has shown interest (see link). Seems like a really good fit for UR.

The transfer gets a free education, maybe 2 minutes a game, and a good seat on the bench to watch the game. What does the team get?

His passing looks good in the video. Looks like he would be a great fit for Mooney's system. Samford was much better when he was healthy, he is very efficient on offense, a great rebounder by the numbers, and a good shot blocker. He is going to be getting P5 interest for sure, he would be an amazing get for us.

Not bad. Doubt we get him though

Coming back from an injury is always risky, but I like what he shows in this video. Skill set seems mostly a fit. Not wild about his outside shot, but he shows strong hands, toughness inside, and good passing. I think he would be a good pick-up, and think he should play right away.

What's this rumor of a transfer from our crew? Is it just March Madness? Some VCU dude says, "...I’ve already heard of at least one major transfer possibility that could deal a blow to next year’s group."

JJ posted a group photo about how they'll all be back next year; GG retweeted it, Gilyard posting about his love for his brothers with a team pic. Am I panicking about RTD alluding to the group not staying together?

Why are you listening to anything a VCU fan says? They are certainly hoping some of our starters will transfer since we have the better starters right now, but that doesn't mean they will transfer.

"Listening" is a stretch, but certainly relaying this information from enemy lines lol. This does help quell my fears.

The rumors are out there. Let's hope there's nothing to them, because we can't afford to lose anyone.

Hear rumors all the time but it is now confirmed that train service from Barclay's Center where the Hoos are in the thick of things heading into the ACC championship game have been cancelled for Sunday due to impending storm. Thus Hoos fans will have to find alternative transportation back to Charlottesville tomorrow. That is confirmed and probably holds as much interest for most of our message board posters as unconfirmed rumors about our players transferring. Heard another rumor that Broad Street message board is imploding due to their poor basketball season.

Ulla,

Thanks for the video of Wyatt Walker. he appears to be an excellent fit for what we look for in a big man. He appears to have the full-package, including very nice court vision, which is a huge + in our system. In the first 1:30 of the video that was posted, he had already made several great passes. Reminds me a lot of Dan Geriot, and we could definitely use another Dan. It is likely he would earn some serious minutes too. Would be willing to take an "injury" risk for a guy with this kind of skill-set.

A couple of other thoughts on the upcoming signing period:

First, we have done terribly with grad transfers, mostly because the pool is to shallow that it is mostly mud.

Second, the spring signing period is also always shallower than the fall, and has a much higher percentage of guys who are not well-prepared academically. The best one I can recall we got was David Gonzalvez, who had been a 6th-man on a good team in his senior year. That one worked out, but I would much rather see us keep two spots open than try to fill them with a shaky grad transfer and an academically challenged late signee.

If the right guy (with the skills and academic mix) is available now, OK. If not, let's save a spot for Bryce and hold it until November if Bryce does not want to play with his brother on a team that has nowhere to go but up. We have 4 guys coming in who should give us all the depth we need. Holding one or two spots would be my vote, unless we get a lucky strike from the deep pool (Bryce, Sy, or Wyatt).

Characterizing Gonzo as the "sixth man on a good team" is absolutely absurd and completely underselling one of the best spiders of the past decade. Gonzo was a starter and 2nd in points, assist, rebounds, and 1st in steals on the best team in Richmond basketball history.
