Trott to JMU

seems like some of you feel that that the defensive coordinator sets his own course. personally believe that the big whistle (head coach) knows what he wants to run based on his personnel and the coordinators work within that framework. you may be disappointed to see the exact same things next year despite the changes........just a guess
My guess is that it is somewhere in the middle. Rocco said from the beginning that he was a run first pass second offensive guy yet when Streeter was here we were just the opposite. Same line, same backs, same receivers. Charlie comes along and changes all of that. Hoping the new DC is more of an attacking defensive mind like Heilman and Jim Reid teams.

If Coach Rocco had wanted to keep him got to believe we would have matched the offer. I sense this may be a mutual parting. We have the athletes to be much more aggressive on defense. We will miss Trott's recruiting ties in NC.

I agree. The bend don't break D was a good game plan when DR was hired and was rebuilding the program. Now, DR knows he has recruited well and has the depth to be a more aggressive defense. Just look at NDSU's D. They are flying around, crowding the line of scrimmage, and keeping constant pressure on their opponents offense. Maybe DR saw this and is doing what he sees neccesary to get us past the semifinals next year.

We have a positive opportunity waiting to happen.

Hopefully, there is a clear plan, and a very favorable final outcome...In any case, we will know what to expect on defense from JMU, which is a good start.

Somewhat true. Rocco is very hands on. Not saying this is good or bad.

Not really. Serious financial difference, really big difference. Plus he comes in with a new staff so you know you have a few years.

What do you think we're talking about here? I suspect BT was in the $100-120k range here, no? Did JMU pony up $150k? Am I in the ballpark here?

After watching the Denver Bronco D play today, can we get one of their top architects (second tier of course)? They were brutal!!!! I think I saw one time they rushed 5, usually 3, and occasionally 4, but Brady had no time all day long.

Very quick to the edge and and not very large.Pats linemen were outquicked all day by the Broncos D.Brady's protection broke down often with tight coverage on Pats WR's.Manning didn't win.Their D did. That ground looked mighty hard as Gisele's hubby was taking a beating all day.

But at least he has her to heal his wounds when he gets home.

Its rather obvious to me that this move was all about $$$. Rumor has always been that we do not pay our asst. coaches well. Head coach, yes.

Assistant Coaches for all college sports make bonus money from the camps revenues. Head Coach takes lower percentage of camp profits so assistants can make more. Many assistants are dependent on making extra revenue from camps.

I certainly don't mind a coach moving up if that what he did, but this is like Damon went to the Yankees.

Byron Thweatt leaving top post at VA State to coach linebackers at JMU.

Also today, Brian Stinespring joining JMU staff. Houston has assembled a solid group of assistants.

Did Brian have a real job with the new regime at Tech?

By Houston hiring knowledgable coaches from within the Commonwealth it should assist them in future recruiting wars.

Wow, Thweatt to JMU is rough. I was hoping he'd be considered for DC
Even though at a DII school, Thweatt was with a successful program that was in Conference championships every year for past few.
Being a head coach and going back to an assistant position coach makes me think there are some major changes that are about to take
place with the VSU program. This one was the mystery to me.

VSU is in some serious financial trouble.

IMO, Thweatt was a very good recruiter but not a great X and O guy. I thought our linebacking play was improved this year under Rojas and Sintim.

Losing both an offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator in one off-season is going to be tough. Fortunately we will have an experienced team with a key nucleus returning. In addition, it cannot be overstated how important it is to have continuity at the Director of Football Operations position. Carl Kotz has been a steadying presence for the players as coaches have come and gone.

Carl does an amazing job. Was a great step up from O'Rielly the previous director. Very much respected by all

What Houston is doing at JMU, in hiring some respected assistants, suggests that we will need to raise the bar in our future assistant hiring. Maintaining the status-quo may not cut it. I would love to see a "home-run" hire for us, where there will be no doubts that we got an upgrade. It if costs a few more bucks, maybe close to what Trott got to go to JMU, so be it.

Maybe Mooney will kick in some money from his salary to hire a defensive coordinator to work with football and basketball.

Would it be best to wait? Given the proximity to national signing day, would it be in our best interests to WAIT on filling the DC job, and do a really thorough national search, that would land us the "best available" coach?

With under a week until NSD, I think that our head guy could keep the defensive recruits lined up, and could do any final recruiting we may need. Rushing this important hire seems to have more of a "downside" than an "up-side," as far as I can see. Anybody know how close we are to making this hiring decision?

We will be able to see in a month or so when the 2016 state employees' salaries are online. I suspect that he told some of his friends (One Putt, e.g.) that he received a large increase in salary, but suspect that it may not be that large, if, indeed, an increase at all.
