Defensive coordinator Trott shifts from Spiders to Dukes

Bob Trott shifted Saturday from University of Richmond defensive coordinator to James Madison defensive coordinator.
Trott, 61, has been the Spiders' defensive coordinator since 2010. Trott said he has known new JMU coach Mike Houston for many years and Madison made a move "very attractive."
UR and JMU play in the same FCS league, the CAA, and the Spiders-Dukes rivalry is one of the conference's best. Richmond, which advanced to the 2015 FCS semifinals, lost its offensive coordinator when Charlie Fisher accepted the head-coaching position at Western Illinois. He recently was replaced by John Garrett, who spent many years in the NFL and came from the Florida staff.
Trott has worked at nine colleges and for three NFL teams, but he said "this is the hardest move I've ever made. Richmond is a special place for me. Richmond's players are special to me. It's a good program. It's on the right track."
Houston, The Citadel's coach the past two years, was named JMU's coach Monday. He succeeded Everett Withers, who moved to FBS member Texas State after two seasons with the Dukes.
At Houston's introductory news conference Tuesday, he identified defensive improvement as JMU's priority. The Dukes advanced to the 2015 FCS playoffs and shared the CAA championship with Richmond and William and Mary. JMU averaged 44.3 points and ranked second among 123 FCS teams in total offense (528.8 ypg), but ranked No. 77 in total defense (403.5 ypg) and allowed an average of 28.7 points.
