The last game was horrible and I thought Mooney did a terrible terrible job coaching. That is the bad news and it is pretty fxxxing bad. The positives are that I think Longwood was a lot better than their preseason ranking. They had a couple of complete studs on their team.

I am still bullish on this freshman class. Mooney needs to play them more and not yank them as soon as they make a mistake. If we can get Jake open, he can drop a lot of 3s. The problem is he is not getting open. Andre seems like he has a lot of talent but need playing time to get used to the increase speed of Div 1 basketball so he does not throw the ball away. That is not going to happen sitting on the bench. Matt Grace has a lot of coordination for a 6 10 dude, but putting him behind the 3 point line is not leveraging his strength. Noah has D1 experience and has performed at a pretty high level off the bench at is previous school, however he didn’t seem to have a lot of confidence. Not sure why they didn’t put Sal in the game.

Playing JJ 18 minutes and putting in Keith might help in the short run, but it is going to kill us in the long run. These freshman are our future and I think we can be much better in the 2nd half of the season if they get a lot of playing time. We will not be getting an automatic bid, but we still have a chance at winning the Tournament.

The problem is putting your “big” guys out at the 3 point line is what Mooney’s system does. No attempt at offensive boards so if you don’t shoot well from outside you are pretty much doomed...there is no adjustment.

doesn't the auto bid go to the winner of the A-10 tourney

It does. Sadly after one game we are already out of at large contention. Yes, I say that somewhat tongue in cheek but we just had a really bad loss at home. I realize that most reasonable fans weren’t expecting us to be a tournament team this year but after 14 years you have to have your guys ready to play on opening night in a year where you should be feeling the heat.

Missed it, sorry. But that doesn't change anything in my thread. After shooting our wad against Longwood, our only chance would be winning the auto bid.

I was waiting for someone to say that Longwood was better than expected. Congrats. But they weren't.

Problem is that everyone in the basketball world knows Mooney's patented offense/defense by now. He hasn't changed anything. Longwood was even jumping our famous 18 second weave and intercepting our passes. No more sneaking up on anyone. Doomed.
And for that reason.....I'm out.

I’ve read enough.

reasonable fans have said for a number of years this is the NCAA bid year. You can keep changing the goals all it becomes is a never fulfilled dream.

Good job by "Jon Archer".

Conor Smith comes off as a real prick, which isn't a big surprised based on the entitlement of the "real fans"...which is a group that's essentially comprised of former players and athletics staffers at this point.

I hope John Archer will ask Conor for his receipt on his ticket "purchase."

Hmm, don't have instagram, but I can only imagine. I guess if I received a free college education I might have similar loyalty.
Some people blindly defend Moonbeam, they don't seem to think for over a mil salary we should expect a coach that can motivate, recruit top players, X and O, and generally build a program that fans are excited about and have NCAA expectations most years.

Don't have instagram, can someone screen shot that dialogue.

That's an interesting exchange. Is Butler the other commenter? Regardless, I don't think anyone is suggesting that CM isn't a class act which seems to be most of Conor's defense. I'm also sure CM wants to win, but whatever he's doing is not getting us there. So it's reasonable to seek a change.

Thanks, 17. Conor Smith comes off as a real douche. Big talk from a guy who got 4 years free education courtesy of Mooney and didn't make 1 contribution on the court. Yeah, I guess I'd have some allegiance to the guy too, if he got my entire college education paid for. And hilarious that he references the winning culture Mooney built back in 2011. Hate to break it to him but it is 2018.

Longwood dropped a tough one to the Seattle Redhawks, 70-50, earlier this week. The Redhawk coach, Jim Hayford, must have designed a good strategy to handle the "complete studs" on Longwood.

One thing is for certain, Butler will fight for Mooney....literally. :D And Conor should be proud...he's the first in a long line of Mooney recruiting busts.

I guess they feel their access goes away if we get a new coach, but even they have to get sick of the losing at some point. Butler was on his phone much of the 2nd half in the Hampton game. I guess our game atmosphere that Mooney created has even gotten a little stale for Mooney's most ardent backer.

I would do pay per view to watch us play Randolph Macon. That would be an interesting game.

After watching R-MC play at home on Wednesday and go 8-0, I wouldn't like our chances very much.

Right. At what point does access to a crappy program take a back seat to rooting for a good one? Especially as a former player, you will always be welcomed back by any coach. I don't quite get it. Would they rather we continue to suck?

Imagine having to sit with the non "real fans" up in the rafters and maybe having to pay for tickets or join the Spider Club? Ugh

I agree for the most part. I know a guy who played at URI back when they had their run to s16. When Hurley got hired he reached out to him, and Hurley was like just let me know what you need, tickets whatever. Was very welcoming. And the guy I know was deep bench during that run, but ended up starting a year or two later, but not a star. But a guy that was deep bench at UR might have some trepidation that he loses some status with a new coach.

The fans that continue to support Moon, I don't get. He has not done anything compelling in the last several years, and his lack of recruiting and recognition is unbelievable. So many years we go in just hoping that guys show up better and that we don't have a single injury.

I would imagine that many have a tough time separating the man from the coach. Mooney is a friend/mentor to many. I think many on this board would defend their friends/mentors even if you knew they were wrong. I think it’s less about their “access”.

In full disclosure, I like Butler and have had many a beer with him, but haven’t talked to him in years.

Sure, I get that. But defend him as a person, not as a coach at this point. You really can't defend him as a successful coach who's worth the money he's being paid any longer without looking like a fool. The numbers don't allow it.
