Everyone wants the best people to do the job. The problem with that is that when historically only certain types of people have had access to certain opportunities, other groups of people do not have that access and almost never can get it. Hence why we've had all white presidents, except for one.
Were all the smartest, most equipped-to-be-president citizens really always white men between 1776-2008? Was every potentially capable CEO a white man for 150 years? Was every nuclear physicist? We could go on and on.
And if you believe that was the case, I'm not sure what to tell you. If you don't believe that, it's worth considering why it was the case and what steps might be taken to change the playing field.
I personally do not love everything about DEI or its precursor, but I also understand the goal, which is to give more people the opportunities that historically have gone only to white men. As a white man, sure, it might mean that sometimes you or I get the short end of the stick when we might not deserve it. Congratulations: now we understand a tiny bit what people of color and women have been dealing with every day for centuries.
I don't recall any of us complaining when the hiring practices of this country were governed by *E* (exclusionary) policies for two centuries, but as soon as things change, half the country is up in arms. Seems hypocritical to me.
