The future is bright

can the negative guys give the positive at ;east one thread? Seems only fair to me

Here you go. I'm excited about the attendance figures for this year, most of the crowds were great, hat's off to the staff for doing a wonderful job getting fannies in the seats.

As for the "negative guys" label, I think many of the "positive guys" feel the same about certain things as the "negative guys", they just don't want to say it here because they're afraid of hurting someone's feelings.

I think some players might transfer. Considering how few minutes many players got on the bench.
Of the available bench guys, I’m not sure how many of them we need to worry about getting minutes and/or being back. Two of them got “appropriate” minutes (JJ, Cayo). Four of them we know won’t be back (Solly, Kirby, Big Paul, and JMA), and the rest were either redshirts or walkons.

If guys transfer it’s not going to be due to lack of PT.

Rick -- you miss my point, the positive posters were trying to start a thread to their liking and it was hijacked.

Fan1, I understand your point completely, but you should deliver the same message to Ulla and the "positive" guys. He does the same thing to all of the "negative" threads.

But this is a dangerous game and once you start doing something like that you lose the freedom to speak your mind on the board.

I’m encouraged by the teams play in the last third of the season. We were still inconsistent but showed an ability to win, an ability to fight back our way into games we were losing and the ability to stomp an opponents throat when we were ahead.

I worry about our size quite a bit. Depth should be better with a little more bench height at least, even if those guys like Phoenix and Tomas haven’t played yet. At least they’ll know the systems which is no small part of this year’s problem.

I hope not...that would be an NLI violation.

Not hard to imagine the conversation between CM and Grant - so you talk, text, or email to your brother often? Maybe you could ask him what his plans are for his basketball future? But don't tell him I inquired - just let him know how much you enjoy being a Spider.......could you do that?

In what universe do we finish a season like we had this season, and not expect some negativity on a "rainbows and unicorns" thread?

I think the future is bright, we can only go up from here.

If someone wants a "positive-only" thread, let him start one. There are already a few examples, and the forum can handle (and respect) more.
This thread was started with a quoted headline from an RTD article, which was stuffed full of Coach's talking points for his annual review with his new boss.

That's actually a good question about Bryce. Is Grant allowed to try to convince him to come here? Or is that an NCAA violation? If you or I talked to Bryce like that, it would be a violation. Are the rules different for current students?

On Bryce, we came in second to Pitt. If Bryce decides to reopen his search and then does not choose us again. That is the definition of Mooney's recruiting follies.

Mooney if Bryce is out there for the getting, you need to get him. No ifs, ands or butts. It's you f'ing job, so go do it.

Bryce knows we are here and want him badly, and he would play a lot and right away here. I am sure he knows more about this program than he does about Pittsburgh’s. Let’s wait and see what he does. We are very lucky to have Grant, so having both the Golden Boys would be a real “game changer” so to speak.

lol. if Bryce wants out of Pitt, let's see what other options he has before claiming it's a total failure that we don't land him. Maryland wanted him last time. based on Bryce's last choice, that might be the kind of school he wants.

No, that is always the excuse Mooney gets. It is on record that it came down between UR and Pitt and Bryce chose Pitt. So, now Mooney is going to allow some other school to come and swoop yet another recruit away from us.

At some point, he needs to land guys like Bryce. We can't keep giving him excuses not to land them.

"Do your job, Mooney?" That is my new mantra for him. I'm tired of him not doing his job and only have 12 scholarship players or dumpster diving in May because everyone legit player has turned him down and signing some guy just to fill a roster spot.

No more excuses for Mooney. He has gotten excuses for 7 years here and that has bred this culture on non-accountability that permeates our program and obviously a portion of our fan base as well. Why can't he just do his job really well and then we don't have to find an excuse as to why he didn't.

So you didn't notice an improvement in play from the beginning of the season to the end? We're going to have one of the best backcourts in the league with Khwan and Jake, Grant's going to be stronger, Nick is really finding his rhythm, and Buck is Buck and will keep bringing it. Lots of positives to build upon.
Go Spiders!
I agree....kind of..... we can't rely on starting two guards under 6'0". Look at Davidson top 6 players (points and minutes) the shortest is 6' 4". We're simply too short. Grant will improve, probably(hopefully) substantially, Jake is going to get better. Nick and Buck (and may be even Fore) hopefully will have some improvement on shooting, but they aren't going to grow 4 inches nor get any quicker. Hopefully everyone improves on defense.
But size does matter; Nick and Buck would be guards at most schools.
One thing I noticed watching the Davidson game is how many times whomever got the defensive rebound ended up taking the ball down the floor and starting the offense. Decent sized, good all round skills players.

97, because he doesn't get to "allow" or not allow a Big 10 team to swoop in and convince a player that their school is a great option too. it's up to the kid.

hate to tell you, but whoever you want as our coach ... that guy's going to lose recruits to higher conference schools too. not all kids want Richmond as much as we do. and no amount of smooth talking will change that. if Bryce wants out of Pitt, and if he wants to play with his brother, and if he feels strongly about our team and coach and school, then he'll come here.

and yet we beat them twice.

A-10 coaches get BCS level recruits regularly. We are just not used to it because we have Mooney doing our recruiting.

I hope the future is bright. We need consistency from everyone. There were too many stretches of the season or even stretches of games that were like a rollercoaster. One second our starting 5 look like they’re ready to be a bubble team in the ACC, then all of a sudden we’re last in the Patriot League. Consistent effort, consistent assertivensss, consistent shooting, consistent rebounding, consistent defense; not just flashes.

I hope we see this come to fruition, but I hope the coaches and players don’t think it will just happen by coming back next year a year older and experienced. Hard work is needed, because we’re not there yet, and everyone else is putting in hard work to stay ahead of us.

True that we beat Davidson twice, but they won the conference & are dancing in March, and we're not. So, I'd trade two wins for an opportunity to win the A10 Tournament and play in the NCAA Tourney.
yes, they had a much better season than us. a point made by I-M-UR was that Davidson was successful partly because they have bigger guards, and that you can't be successful with 2 small guards. that's not accurate when a team with 2 small guards beats them twice. there are many ways to build a team.

yes they do, and we've gotten some too. CM needs to land more strong recruits. but to say he has to land this one in particular is over the top. this staff has done everything you can do to bring Bryce here. we'll continue to do everything possible. doesn't mean the kids will want to play here. we'll see.

If the future is bright, what are the upsides that Mooney brings to the table?

Briefly, class, intelligence and dignity, all things that mean something to this Spider. Chris is an outstanding teacher and his assistants radiate the same attributes. I look forward to the development of our present talent and a successful run next season. Go Spiders!

Ulla, just curious, what your perspective would be if some of our young talent, decided to take that talent elsewhere via transfer this offseason?

97, not sure how this is related to my post. I would support any person who followed their dreams whatever they may be. Is this what you are getting at? It really would not affect my opinion of someone's character. For example, I'm pretty sure that you are a successful person and a great guy. The actions of someone I don't know would not affect my opinion of you.

Yeah - can't resist - it is either "I am your big brother and I am talking to you" or "This is Big Brother and I am watching you." Surely or maybe not the NCAA does not try to regulate conversations within families?

honor system. I'm sure Grant can talk to Bryce. but I'm also sure nobody from UR can ask Grant to talk to him. all of this stuff is impossible to regulate of course.
