Stony Brook, N.Y. April 23- The Stony Brook football team’s 2016 spring season came to a close on Saturday afternoon at LaValle Stadium as the defense prevailed over the offense 18-7 in its annual spring game.
The Seawolves' defense was awarded points by stopping the offense. Two points were given to a stop before the 50-yard line, one point was given to a stop after the 50-yard line, while four points were awarded to a turnover before the 50-yard line and two points to a turnovers after the 50-yard line. The offense was award points for touchdowns (6), PATS (1 or 2) and field goals (3).
The Stony Brook defense forced stops on its first two possessions before the offense put together its best drive of the game, a 12 play, 97-yard march, culminating in a 30 yard touchdown reception by junior WR
Julius Wingate (Englewood, N.J.) from sophomore QB
Joe Carbone (Wethersfield, Conn.).
Wingate featured heavily on the drive, finishing with three catches for 69 yards. Carbone was 6-for-9 with 96 yards on the drive.
After the touchdown and PAT gave the offense a 7-4 lead, the defense dug in, forcing three punts, a missed field goal and three turnovers over the final seven possessions.
Senior DB
Jaheem Woods (Neptune, N.J.) caused the first turnover, intercepting a Carbone 4th down pass deep in the defense's territory and returning it up the sidelines for eight yards.
Junior DB
Marvin Hart (Minneola, Fla.) came up with the second Stony Brook turnover, intercepting a deep pass by Carbone intended for Wingate. Redshirt freshman DB
Synceir Malone (Bronx, N.Y.) provided blanket coverage on the play, deflecting the pass into Hart’s awaiting arms.
Sophomore DB
Kwabena Young (Brooklyn, N.Y.) ended the game with an interception, jumping in front of an out-pattern and hauling in the low throw before it hit the ground.
Carbone finished the game 16-for-28 with 176 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions. Sophomore QB
Pat Irwin (Lemont, Pa.) also saw extended action under center, finishing 6-for-9 with 44 yards. He completed his first five attempts.
Sophomore RB
Isaiah White (Medford, N.Y.) ran hard between the tackles, punishing defenders en route to 54 yards on 10 carries. Junior RB
Donald Liotine (Medford, N.Y.) added 41 yards on 6 carries, including a 25-yard scamper up the gut of the defense.
Wingate was the offensive standout, finishing the game with 10 catches for 120 yards and a touchdown. Redshirt freshman
Andrew Trent(Bellport, N.Y.) finished as Stony Brook’s second-leading receiver with 28 yards on two catches.

Kye Morgan (Somerset, N.J.), junior DB
Chris Cooper (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Malone led the defense with five stops each. Sophomore DL
Josh Valentin (Bay Shore, N.Y.) added two sacks, while 2016 junior team captain
Tyrice Beverette (Lakewood, N.J.) had two tackles and a sack.
The Seawolves will report back for fall camp in early August before opening the 2016 season at home vs. North Dakota on Thursday, Sep. 1 at 7 pm.
