I was at Stoney Brook on Saturday and I can assure you it was no prettier in person. It was obvious to me that the SB coaches saw a number of things on film that they exploited. Not the least of which was evidently some tendency on kick offs that created a wide open seam down the left side. It was wide open all day. If you heard Rocco's post game press conference you heard him say they were outcoached, out hustled, and outplayed. No use calling it anything other than it was. SB just wanted it more. Two takeaways I have after watching the game. First, we are not as bad as we looked. I hate the idea of a "good loss", but if this team has the potential to still be special ( and I think they do) they will learn from this loss and use this loss to motivate themselves against any team not named Tribe or Barney. Second, Stony Brook is a good and dangerous team. They have some talent and will surprise more teams than just Richmond this year.
BTW, that's a nice stadium at Stony Brook. Talking with a guy up there, he said they have big expansion plans to fill out the end zone around their big scoreboard and an upper deck on the visitors side in order to jump to FBS in a few years. The only problem was they can barely half fill the stadium they've got when they're hosting the number 2 team in the country. They've got all they need to take they're program to the next level except the fans. SMH. I still can't figure out the appeal of going FBS unless you're in the Power 5. I don't know why teams are so determined to go FBS, raise they're athletics budget, lose more money, and if they have a once in a generation season of 11-1 (like App State in 2015), they are rewarded with a no name pre-Christmas bowl game.
